Hmmm.... Not that I really have much content to type right now. Spent way to much of the past couple hours inside some Borg-like structure. Not that I really have much memory of it.

More database fun, code update

Monday, January 29, 2001 00:07

So I didn't actually get into the code until almost a half hour later. Spent a bit of time harrassing bouncing about the newly discovered fact that when I tried to sync my rambling to rage, the database was no longer accepting socket connections. Doh! So we had to get that worked out, which bouncing managed to do.

Whew

Sunday, January 28, 2001 22:11

I just arrived back from my trip to return my rental to the Video Station and mail all the monthly bills. It took entirely longer than it should have. Partly because of the heavy snow, and partly because the postal service arbitrarily decided to increase the rates, making my current stamps useless by themselves. This prompted several detours around town in an attempt to acquire a few measly 1 cent stamps. Puuah.

Wowee. Crank the paranoia level up another 10 notches, will ya? I don't think I'm quite freaked out enough by Micros^H^H^H^H^H^H .. ahem.. Nurv's nasty business practices and proprietary, backdoor-ridden software to realize the danger, so let's go for the "Big Brother is watching" angle. Everyone and everything around is being controlled by a huge conspiracy, masterminded by the evil incarnate himself, Bill G^H^H^H^H^H^H Gary Winston.

Shoutouts

Bitscape: I bet it is indeed.
2001-01-01 17:44:42-07

Bitscape just got Argo back up and running
2001-01-01 17:49:10-07

bouncing: Hmmm... argo is back up I see.
2001-01-01 18:55:52-07

bouncing: The movie log section of Bitscape's Lounge is has a rather long digest of Content Solutions.
2001-01-01 19:01:25-07

bouncing posts content
2001-01-01 21:29:52-07

Bitscape: Indeed he does. (I'll leave the customary "what a rare event that is" comment to Jaeger.)
2001-01-01 22:29:48-07

Bitscape: The movielog thing you describe is the result of an unfortate side effect of the current code (that needs to be fixed), combined with the fact that I haven't made a movielog entry for many moons now.
2001-01-01 22:31:37-07

bse: hmm.. is this a bug i notice?
2001-01-02 07:14:24-07

bse of another dimension: oh.. maybe not.. it's just me going back in time for soem odd reason.
2001-01-02 07:15:46-07

Shadowkiller: Show me the content!
2001-01-03 08:05:19-07

scott: to avoid future server disruptions, a secondary nameserver is being built and located at peter's - rumor has it the hard drive is 60gb so we can store our mp3's on it
2001-01-03 09:10:37-07

Shadowkiller: That would be nice. Although if Network Solutions refuses to update any of the info anyway, I fail to see how a secondary nameserver would do much good.
2001-01-03 10:36:17-07

bouncing: Well... It's no fix, but if we changed the main server's IP address, the secondary would still point in right direction.
2001-01-03 13:44:19-07

bse: hm.. i think my motherboard's bios has a setting for power outages and atx.. a restore-to-previous-state -on-power-surge, or something like that. i turn it off anyway, too loud; i leave the gateway on, comfroting white hum.. yay.

Jäger: sounds about right...
2001-01-04 14:46:24-07

Bitscape: What I wouldn't give for episodes 4-6 on anamorphic dvd... Lucas is a madman.
2001-01-04 17:10:38-07

Bitscape: episode 1 too, for that matter.
2001-01-04 17:11:07-07

Bitscape: I still think that the switch should have direct physical control over the current flowing into the box. When you turn it off, the system should REALLY be without power until it's flipped back again. No namsy pansy software power control.
2001-01-04 17:18:54-07

Bitscape: Just feels better that way. :)
2001-01-04 17:19:08-07

bse of another dimension remembers the hefty _switch_ on his dad's old box; mind you, it was a dodgy switch that sometimes didn't work for whatever reason..
2001-01-04 19:02:00-07

bouncing: There should be a cold switch on the back of the box, on the power supply. The ATX power design is superiro though, because it can reduce needless power usage and also allows for remote shutdown and wake-on-lan.
2001-01-04 21:01:31-07

Bitscape: 2.4 is out everybody! Now go pound those ftp servers for all they're worth.
2001-01-04 21:29:27-07

Bitscape: I see stuff on Jaeger's page quoting statements I almost forgot I had said.
2001-01-05 05:15:38-07

bse: or are these the days, and i just havent noticed yet? i need more caffeine...
2001-01-05 05:35:59-07

Jäger: these are the days. You need more caffeine.
2001-01-05 09:11:47-07

bouncing: Anyone know of a good 2.4 mirror?
2001-01-05 10:13:58-07

Bitscape: This is utterly sick. On the ONE day that I CAN sleep until noon if I feel like it, what happens? The nice, blissful opening of eyes at 1000 that I've been dreaming of all week? Hah! My silly brain just wakes up at 0630. No alarm. Sick, I tell you.
2001-01-06 07:51:07-07

bse: i just woke up. its 5:12pm.. morning.
2001-01-06 10:03:32-07

bse: hmm.. are there any hacked nvidia kernel modules that work with 2.4.0? i tried hacking it yesturday, with no success.. no X until i have kernel drivers.. boo..
2001-01-06 10:04:26-07

bouncing notes that Bitscape *could* either just do simple database replication (nothing new) or simply connect argo to Rage's db server.
2001-01-07 20:36:50-07

Bitscape: And what if there's one person on Rage trying to create something while somebody else on Argo is in the same area?
2001-01-07 20:43:00-07

Bitscape: Connecting Argo to Rage's db server for each pageview sounds like a performance nightmare.
2001-01-07 20:44:12-07

bouncing: Need not be real-time; just use query caching.
2001-01-07 22:25:47-07

2001-01-21 18:25:43-07

Bitscape: Doh. My bug. I was giving it bad values. But still, it really isn't nice for a perl module to segfault like that.

Humblik notices older thread. Tuition will probably rise due to his need to improve schools.

scott: [www.anandtech.com] - check your hardware prices before buying
2001-01-22 23:56:56-07

scott: btw, rockynet wants some money for housing rage for so long - since everyone has a job, how hard would it be to chip in $20?
2001-01-22 23:59:07-07

bouncing: Oh, I suppose that could be arranged.
2001-01-23 09:09:42-07

bouncing: FYI: I'm putting database vacuuming in the crons for all databases, so if you vacuum you own on the crons stop. The vacuums will be done nightly.
2001-01-23 11:07:36-07

bouncing: Has everyone seen Traffic yet? Really. Why not?
2001-01-23 14:00:34-07

bse of another dimension: is it good?
2001-01-23 16:01:39-07

bouncing: Extremely!!
2001-01-23 16:09:09-07

bse is all out of inspiration... gah

Shadowkiller: Here's an idea for Microsoft's next ad campaign: Windows -- Because rebooting all day is FUN!
2001-01-24 11:15:04-07

bouncing: Windows? That sounds like something those guys in Suite 270 use. Down here at Suite 280, we run LINUX!
2001-01-24 11:26:31-07

scott: another reason to use linux - have you noticed that microsoft.com has been down all day? and it's not my connection!
2001-01-24 13:47:41-07

Jäger: On slashdot: their dns is down.
2001-01-24 14:18:06-07

Jäger: (not like we care anyway)
2001-01-24 14:20:32-07

bouncing: Heh... I guess now that Scott's working at Sun and spending most of his time on Solaris, he's got the right to diss Microsoft.
2001-01-24 16:34:35-07

bouncing: Maybe you should write a mini-HOWTO.
2001-01-24 17:16:35-07

bouncing saw 'Snatch'
2001-01-24 21:41:45-07

bouncing: Ted has a girlfriend who codes half the night... There's something a bit disturbing about that.
2001-01-24 21:51:08-07

bse: hrmm.. has Snatch only just come out in america or something? i've heard other people talking about it. it was out over here for ages, i think it's on dvd now too.. hmm..
2001-01-25 06:12:27-07

bouncing: I think it came out metro/denver on Friday.
2001-01-25 10:04:51-07

scott: i installed kde on my redhat box :)
2001-01-25 11:06:02-07

bse of another dimension doesnt like those 'environment' jobbes.. constrictive..
2001-01-25 11:32:15-07

GemStone: Why would Ted's girlfriend coding half the night be disturbing?
2001-01-25 11:33:13-07

bse: hello
2001-01-25 18:56:33-07

bouncing: Just is. What were you coding? . . Hello, bse.
2001-01-25 20:02:50-07

Zan Lynx: I just installed Squid. I noticed that your content hardly ever changes. All of you content farmers should add caching headers to your pages! To cut down on the huge load times, of course :-)
2001-01-25 22:39:36-07

GemStone: Internet voting user interface for software engineering.
2001-01-25 23:44:18-07

bse: bitscape, you could still do vhs output.. if your video card supports it, composite signal to tv, vcr to tv, record on vcr. would prolly knacker the vcr's heads though.. so never mind ;)
2001-01-26 06:54:18-07

bouncing noticed thinkgeek.com is selling DVD players that play DVDs from all regions.
2001-01-26 10:37:22-07

Bitscape: I think the original idea was to use a still-frame capture VCR because our PCs at the time were incapable of outputting full motion video in real time.
2001-01-27 12:20:25-07

bouncing: Even still, it would be hard on the BUS.
2001-01-27 16:22:20-07

bse: of course, you can output to fmv, and then use something else that i cant remember at hte moment to put the video onto video tape =)
2001-01-27 17:18:25-07

bse ponders what he's just let himself in for next sunday...
2001-01-28 10:09:57-07

Bitscape: Doh. Looks like that reverting of the database the last couple of Content Solutions bits to disappear.
2001-01-28 15:24:50-07

bouncing: That was harder than it should have been.
2001-01-28 16:02:02-07

bouncing: Zope doesn't like loosing its database connections several times in a row... it seems to stop trying after the third drop in a few minutes.
2001-01-28 16:08:03-07

Jäger: ok then... i'm still enduring COM and MFC torture, and not much hope of it ever resolving itself
2001-01-28 16:18:31-07

Bitscape: Let us all watch in horror as Jaeger is assimilated.
2001-01-28 17:06:33-07

Jäger: End of day one: Bluetooth 1, Jaeger 0
2001-01-28 17:51:39-07

Bitscape: More database fun.

2001-01-29 13:15:26-07

bse: EEK.. so, earlier, i was trying to help my dad get dreamweaver to do CSS over all of his table that he was trying to make..
2001-01-29 13:59:48-07

bse: i cant beleive how long it took to actually get it to work.. nulike by hand, which would have taken a matter of seconds.. bah!
2001-01-29 14:00:28-07

bouncing: Frontpage made a month of my life living hell... We no longer support it.

scott: my first test in this semester - 100% - ercc140 geology. if this keeps up i'll have to change my major.

bouncing: User error?
2001-01-30 09:54:35-07

Jäger: Replace user, and hit any key to continue.
2001-01-30 09:56:21-07

Jäger locates the code fragment that he needs to emulate, the solution that i've been searching for.
2001-01-30 12:54:26-07

Jäger: Well, the assimilation continues...
