Up and running again

Wednesday, May 31, 2000 20:25

Yes, after being down for over 24 hours. Gotta hate those downtimes. Had to re-import the whole db, or everything that uses large objects, at any rate. Somehow, the referential integrity was lost in the migration, so ramblings and movielog went kablooie. Now there's probably a whole bunch of dangling objects wasting Rage's hard drive space. (Or maybe not, if they never got migrated in the first place; I can't really find out, since all the ids were lost.) Oh well. lol.

What a mess

Tuesday, May 30, 2000 20:03

Hmmm... The point at which this appears on the public page is indeterminate at this time. It would seem I am not the only one who, just when everything is working nicely, gets these stranges urge to upgrade stuff, causing breakages left and right, and... well, more fun for the whole family. Heh. If we're lucky, and I decide I feel like spending some time this evening in the world of ugly hacks, we might just see it back to normal before the end of the night. If.

On design philosophies, web hacks, days off, and more of the finer aspecs of life

Monday, May 29, 2000 09:07

Yesterday, toward the end of the fest, Jaeger announced that the shared content database thingee was ready for use. As such, neither bouncing nor I wasted much time producing implementations of it on our pages. A cool concept, me thinks. We'll see what happens with it. :)

The Matrix (****)

Monday, May 29, 2000 02:27

Given that I have watched this movie in its entirity for three out of the past four nights (entirity being defined as the film itself, not the special features, many of which I have yet to even discover), I figure I may as well make an official entry. :)

To the rear-left of me, Jaeger and bouncing sit, each deeply involved in the creation of their projects, as am I. Well, not that deeply, I suppose. But festing, nonetheless.

Fun, commentary, and long weekends for the whole family

Friday, May 26, 2000 18:14

This is going to be interesting trying to type a rambling, given that I'm finding my head repeatedly rotating to the right while typing to observe the psychedelically edited montage of shots, art, sketches, partially completed CGI shots and scene fragments from The Matrix set to a funky techno beat.

Headline News! Bitscape's car tops 1000 miles, the boy SELLS OUT.

Thursday, May 25, 2000 20:34

5 And it did come to pass that on the 25th day in the fifth month of the 0th year of the third pre-millennium, Bitscape did officially sell his soul to billg;
6 For on that day, he did'eth drive his car down to the temple of corruption and commerce, and amidst that journey, he did'st make a hefty purchase.
7 Not rash was his thinking -- for this premeditated act had been concieved of and pondered upon many days in advance. The lure of the serpent is great, my friends. The lure of the serpent is great.
8 And Bitscape did'eth examine many of the items there -- over two hours did he spend examining the various models, and travelling to different stores to comparison shop. At last, he chose upon his purchase.
9 And the happy bank account depletion card begat this, and the happy bank account depletion card begat that; for the mind of a geek knows no boundries.
10 And he did'eth emerge from the temple, not shouting, cursing, turning tables at the mechants, and behaving more disruptively than a Natelie Portman N&P troll during a flame war. No, my friends, no such commotion did he evoke.
11 The boy emerged with What? With goods in hand a plenty!
12 A Phillips CRT, a DVD player, and (gasp!) two titles containing content in said format. So large was one of the items that it required removal from its external packaging before it could be loaded into the horseless carraige.
13 And he did'eth return to the Louisville Compound to unload the goods and make merry.
14 At once when he returned, the place was vacant. And Bitscape reserved no haste in his effort to transport the goods from carraige to lair.
15 For now these items do sit situated, active and beckoning unto the geek to press the "Play" button.
16 But know this, children of Slashdot! Lord Stallman shall smite them down, just as he smote those whose proprietary smut offended and evoked the wrath of the Holy Gnu.
17 And let all who bow down and make offerings at the temple of Neo be warned: Ye shall get your just comeuppance.

Having just heard Kid Rcok's pathetic desecration of the Metallica song "Sad but True" once again, I figure I may as well post a ramble on a current issue I have remained silent on up until now. That being, of course, the recent Napster controversy. (Ok, not entirely silent. I do recall mentioning something about it in passing when Uncle Nasty and the panel were debating it the other day.)

Unprecedented news breaking: Bitscape uploads new code

Sunday, May 21, 2000 19:08

Yeah, don't laugh too hard. Pathetic, I know. But I couldn't end another weekend putting nothing up on the server, so there it is. An ugly, half-finished little perl interface. No graphics. Cheap colors. Incomplete info. And no titles or any identifying information whatsoever. I don't think I've ever publicly posted such a shabby looking thing before, even when Dagobah was running development stuff live on the live ucollege.edu network. lol.

Hikes, quality television programming, solo festing

Rant

Saturday, May 20, 2000 10:05

Alright, so I think I might like to go to the upcoming NIN concert, which is coming in June. This morning, I figure it would be best to get tickets sooner rather than later, so I wander over to Ticketmaster's web site to see what the deal is. After a bit of clicking around, I find the page with info about the event I'm after.

Miles to go...

Friday, May 19, 2000 20:49

And so, another week reaches its end -- time to kick back, grab a (beer|dew|tranquilizer|hyperstimulant), throw on a few tunes, do a lil surfin, maybe write a few lines of code, watch a lil quality television programming, and maybe, just maybe (brace yourselves), get a lil exercise in the sunshine (horror of horrors). Nah. Or maybe really so! :)

Ever feel...

Saturday, May 13, 2000 20:34

Like even though you live in what could easily be called a metropolis, you're the most alone person in the world? Ever feel your faith in humanity just slipping down and away, like a glass of water full of holes? Ever get tired of trying to convince yourself through acts of mental trickery that everything's fine and wonderful?

Gladiator (***)

Saturday, May 13, 2000 15:03

The most impressive thing about this movie were the action scenes. In fact, they were so good, that at times I wondered whether the point of this movie was to portray the struggle of the ancient gladiators, or to conjure a Colosseum-like effect within the theatre audience -- invoke us all to applaud when our hero was victorious in games of mindless violence, rather than engender in viewers a sense of disgust at the injustice. I could've sworn I heard some of the people behind me joining in with the roars of the ancient Roman mob crowd. But then again, maybe it was just the lifelike digital surround sound system. :)

And then last night...

Sunday, May 7, 2000 15:25

At 0100, I started to type a rambling which would cover this. Four paragraphs in, I realized I was way to tired to undertake such an endeavor. I left it, and decided to finish in the morning. Looking now at what I had, I see that it was quite pathetic. Similar to the articulation level displayed a week before Friday, when I returned home dead tired and attempted to convey the events of the evening. So, I think I'll just start over.

Some Darker Stuff

Sunday, May 7, 2000 07:02

Warning: the following is several notches darker than the usual fare here. Or at least, I was feeling a lot darker while I wrote it. It was written between the hours of 5 and 7 this morning. I make no claims about its merchantability or fitness for any purpose. In fact, I would almost like to disclaim it entirely, since the content is so far from my current feelings on the matter. Who really wants to admit their ugly side to the world? But, for reasons explained later on within, here it is. Enjoy. Or don't. If you don't want to get into the nastier side of me, you might not want to read it.

And now, we ponder...

Friday, May 5, 2000 19:23

So, once again, this unit of time we creatures of civilization know as a "week" progresses into that phase called the "weekend", during which our activities mutate and evolve into.... something. Sleep perhaps. Or the seeking of that ever-elusive concept of "happiness". (Not that we don't also look for it during "work days", but in many cases, being busy keeps such concerns from becoming a primary focus.) I suppose some of us might also spend our spare time Walking on Hot Coals, just for the hell of it. I am not currently one of those people.

by the seine
so beautiful
only not to be of use
impossible

so strange victory
1200 spires
the only sound moscow burning
emptly like the tuileries
like a dream vienna seems
only not to be of use
impossible

in the last extremity
to advance or not to advance
i hear you laughing

even still you're calling me
not tonight

Morpheus: That the Matrix can not tell you who you are.

Bitscape: Hey "Neo" and "Morphius", stop it. You're making me mighty tempted to watch a movie which I have -- by all normal standards -- already watched WAY too much of in the last few days. ;)
2000-05-31 20:30:27-06
