Hmmm... I suppose I should give a spoiler warning.
WARNING!!!! VOYAGER SPOILERS BELOW!!!
And a 1
And a 2
And a 3
And...
Hmmmm. Not a terrible episode, but nothing outstanding either. I think this one just required too much suspension of disbelief. Yes, just about anything that involves time travel is inevitably going to have some logical problems, but tonight's seemed especially rife with sketchily supported premises. Beyond that, I guess I really didn't buy into this new Kes's character. Maybe that was really the root of my less than excited reaction to this episodes. If characters' motivations and actions make sense, it's much easier to overlook gaps in the plot, even big ones.
But, let's first look at the technical shortcomings. First, this vengeful Kes ain't too bright, is she? If she sells Voyager out to the Vidiians, and they harvest the whole crew, there ain't gonna be a warp core to suck the energy out of three years into the future. Of course, if the present-day Voyager doesn't exist, Kes won't be able to travel back in time, and if she can't travel back in time, she can't execute the little plot, and ... (yes, I know most scifi stories that try to involve time travel in the plot end up with similar problems)
But beyond the obvious, so much was never explained. Tuvok's premonition. Why? What caused it? And we're supposed to believe that after all these years, Tuvok and the Captian will instantly recognize what's going on when it happens, while Kes buries it into her mind and is totally oblivious? Ok, Tukok, being a Vulcan, I might be able to see. But Janeway? Ok, maybe. And Kes's memory loss... That's the toughest to buy. Again, I could gloss over and say "maybe." But I think I've reached my quota of "Maybe"'s for this episode.
But the real problem: Kes's character doesn't make sense. A brief, vague, weakly worded 30 second explanation for why the former crewmember would go on a killing rampage, and then, after we've seen her relentlessly plot Voyager's destruction in one timeline, all it takes is a brief little holo-recording in another to bring back the peaceful, kind Kes? Had the transformation (and the initial vengeful motivations) been developed a bit better, I might have bought it. As it was, I was like, "Huh?"
And just why was the whole thing kept secret from the rest of the crew after the fact, when the old, wrinkly Kes was safely on her way home? What did I miss? Oh well...
When ya sit around and wait that long for an episode to start, ya want it to be good. That will be the extent of tonight's bitch fit. ;)
Next week's looks really cool. Troi again! Yipee! :)
In other news, I did go to the store earlier this evening to procure some supplies. Let's just say the pigmentation in my hair might be altered slightly in the near future. I've kind of wanted to try dying it for a while, but have just recently become inspired enough to do so. (And that's supposed to be a dual reference, to sources in both the online and offline worlds.) Not gonna happen tonight, and probably not tomorrow. But when I am ready, the stuff is there. :)
And now, I shall attempt to procure a small amount of sleep before being rudely energized out of a dream by the site-to-site mind transporter cron job.
