Wrapping up last night, and more thoughts

Friday, July 30, 2004 23:40

As it grew later in the evening, many of the teenagers and others who had come for open mike night dwindled away. A few remained, and continued to play the instruments. I asked the keyboard player, the guy who appeared to be the one organizing things, if he minded if I jammed on the keyboard (and warned that I wasn't very good), and he said sure, and offered to help me switch it to whatever instrument sound I wanted.

How To Write A Political Poem

Friday, July 30, 2004 17:48

However it begins, it's gotta be loud
And then it's gotta get a little bit louder
Because this is how you write a political poem
and how you deliver it with power.

I wasn't sure what to expect exactly. "Open Mike Night." At a house. Where a bunch of people lived. The same people who ran the local chapter of Food Not Bombs. All very mysterious. But I had to know. So I went.

And I'm like... Damn this is profound!

Tuesday, July 27, 2004 23:59

When we peel back all the layers of pain and distrust and neurotic surface fears, what lies beneath is that infinite primal terror of being stuck forever with no love. We have built our societies on the pursuit of success: traditionally that's meant beauty for women and power for men, although increasingly these overlap. Daily, we see around us the dismissal of the ugly, the weak, the old, the powerless. So we know that one day it could and can and will be us who are dismissed. Whether we have the tools to fool everyone until we are old, or whether tomorrow someone sees our cracks and stains and rejects us, the fear of isolation is valid because all around us are images confirming that isolation is our destiny. Buy your way out of isolation, out of dismissal and anonymity, say the corporations. Try this product, this shampoo, this razor, this cellphone, this car . . . blah blah blah. Buy in. But the billboards of sexy girls gaining the attentions of powerful men are empty promises of reward when below them an old woman sits alone at a bus stop.

Dumpster Carbs!

Monday, July 26, 2004 02:00

Made an impromptu midnight dumpster run on my way through town tonight. Lots of full bins. It must be almost time for trash pickup. Sometimes in the past when I've looked, they've been nearly empty. But not now!

A fictional narrative

Saturday, July 24, 2004 21:50

Political Rally

This morning, I woke up bright and early and drove to South Denver. Scott and I had agreed to meet at 09:00, and I thought I was going to be late since I didn't actually leave until 08:30. But traffic was surprisingly light, and I found myself pulling into the high school parking lot a few minutes early.

Transcoding video

Tuesday, July 20, 2004 23:13

I have just taken my first mini-step into transcoding video on Argo. Unlike some people, to call me an amateur at this would be greatly overstating my current skill level.

This story actually begins many, many moons ago. Last year, my dad unearthed some very ancient 16mm(?) film from decades ago, containing pictures of old family members, church gatherings, and all sorts of other odd stuff.

This evening, in search of adventure, and wanting to further my still-very-beginnerish urban survival skills, I made a stop at a dumpster in a location I had scouted this morning as I biked over: Vitamin Cottage. It's a little store that has lots of new age style herbs, vitamins, oils, and organic produce. My mom likes to shop there. Did I mention organic produce?

Distro switch

Monday, July 12, 2004 20:10

Sunday, I spent the bulk of the afternoon installing Gentoo on Argo. By 22:00, I had completed a stage 1 install, had X running in a way superficially looked altogether too identical to my old setup (due to the fact /home had remained untouched), and left mozilla compiling. Though far from complete, this would at least leave me a minimal setup from which I could at least do something resembling "work" the next day, so I decided to call it good.

Before Sunset (****)

Saturday, July 10, 2004 19:58

I'll start off by saying that I believe Richard Linklater is a goddamn genius. I need to see more of his films. So far, of the ones I have seen, not one of them has failed to amaze and touch me. This one was no exception. It fact, it brought me to tears, not once, but twice: first during a scene near the end of the movie, and again later after I had left the theatre as I reflected on the story I had just beheld.

I find myself returning to my more "traditional" modes of operating, sitting back in my safe zone. I suppose that this is natural in a way. Shoutouts

Bitscape: I would submit that there is a big difference between "air and missile strikes on suspect sites" and full-scale invasion and occupation of a country. That's not to say that either one is such a hot idea.
2004-07-01 10:20:08

Bitscape: Any weapons Iraq did have were clearly not a threat to the United States, as Bush claimed. Even if they had the capability to strike a continent on the other side of the world (which looks highly unlikely), Saddam, though a bad guy in many other ways, showed no intention of attacking the U.S.
2004-07-01 10:27:22

Bitscape: Bush deceived many Americans into believing that Iraq was an immediate danger to us, when in fact it was not. This has cost hundreds of Americans their lives, and thousands of Iraqi lives, many more serious injuries (numbers of serious injuries rarely get reported on the news), destroyed homes, cost millions of dollars, and lost the trust of most of the world.
2004-07-01 10:33:48

Bitscape: Kerry is no angel, but I do not want America to be driven over the cliff for another 4 years. This is not about electing the perfect leader. It is about getting rid of the truly crazy/sadistic/incompeten t one.
2004-07-01 10:36:37

Bitscape: [www.askthetechgirl.com] For those times when you aren't sure whether you need tech support, phone sex, or something else entirely.
2004-07-01 12:19:05

bouncing: I recal when we invaded, the reason we couldn't wait a week or two for the inspectors to finish their job was that their attack on us was imnenent.
2004-07-01 12:59:32

Zan Lynx: Ah ha! A new argument! So we can stop calling the Bush administration lied about the WMD. They are apparently wrong, but if they lied about the WMD in Iraq, so did everyone. Glad that's settled.
2004-07-01 19:06:46

Zan Lynx: Immanuel Wallerstein is pretty interesting to read: [fbc.binghamton.edu]
2004-07-01 19:10:02

bouncing: No, the argument *is* that he lied. One of the points made by United Nations weapons inspectors was in fact that the alleged anthrax and chemical drugs in Iraq were too old to be useful. Ie; they could only kill dozens of people.
2004-07-02 08:31:24

bouncing: Just a few years ago, canisters of sarin gas were found "lying around" a construction site for the redevelopment of a base. Our super-organized military had left sarin gas just laying around in a field. And we're invading Iraq for remnents of anthrax that Reagan gave them to fight the "godless communists" -- absolute lunacy.
2004-07-02 08:33:20

Jäger: The stages of job searching: [www.queenofwands.net]
2004-07-02 20:36:13

Bitscape: Many of them (including Kerry) did go along with Bush's lies. (I might point out that Howard Dean was one of the few who spoke out against them from the beginning, but it seems kind of moot now.)
2004-07-03 12:06:34

Bitscape: I liked the music selections for the various stages on that comic.
2004-07-03 12:08:36

bouncing: In all fairness, Kerry's mistake was believing Bush. That's a mistake, not a lie. I never heard Kerry warn that the smoking gun could be a "mushroom cloud" -- something Cheney said over and over again. That clearly had the intent to making Americans think they were under a threat of nuclear attack from Saddam. Kerry does some of his own fearmongering, but at least it hasn't resulted in thousands of corpses.
2004-07-04 15:37:05

bouncing was shocked (shocked) to see that Jim White's new CD is a whopping $17! What happened to psuedo-indie artists being cheaper?
2004-07-04 15:44:38

Zan Lynx: Well, not yet. Kerry isn't in charge. Yet. We'll see.
2004-07-04 16:50:27

bouncing: This deserves some mockery: [www.christian-web-masters.com]
2004-07-05 10:54:23

Linknoid: Are you mocking the fact that a web design site is targetting Christians, or what?
2004-07-05 22:35:09

bouncing: I'm mocking it because religion has nothing to do with web design. It's kind of like "CSS For Redheds" or "Why Javascript is important to people who wear loafers."
2004-07-06 12:37:53

Linknoid: I would agree that it's ridiculous if it were just a web design site, but that seems to be only a portion of the content of that site. Take a look at their home page.
2004-07-06 15:49:28

Yanthor: Yes, the site is about more than CSS, but I still agree with bouncing. It is stupid. Being a webmaster is about being a webmaster. The way you apply security upgrades, other server management, and coding, does not matter whether you are a christian or not. The tools of the web, whether administering a server, writing code, or doing design...those skills don't change whether you are a christian or not.
2004-07-06 16:56:45

Yanthor: Those skills are like any other tool, it matters what you do with them. If the site seeks to teach people the "right" way to use these skills...well, I still think that is stupid. It is like telling someone the "christian" way to swing a hammer.
2004-07-06 16:59:37

bouncing notes that Bitscape is likely to find more "like-minded" people in the Boulder area than most anywhere.

2004-07-07 09:15:35

Bitscape ponders the thought of writing a script to simultaniously post every rambling to livejournal.
2004-07-07 11:14:43

Yanthor: If you are wanting to slim your stuff down so it can all fit in your car, a way to keep your DVDs would be to get rid of their huge cases and just keep the disks in a cheap and very compact holder.
2004-07-07 14:50:04

Jäger: Sounds like a scheme Bitscape used/uses for his cds
2004-07-07 14:59:34

Bitscape: I do plan to do that with the more recently acquired portion of my cd collection that hasn't already been compressed in that manner.
2004-07-07 15:05:26

Bitscape: As for DVD's, I'd like to get rid of most of them, and keep only a few of my very favorites.

2004-07-08 08:19:34

Yanthor: Ironically, my site would not take much modification to make into a fullblown competitor for livejournal. I've got the entire infrastructure in place.
2004-07-08 08:44:15

Yanthor: Obviously they've also got more non-geek friendly options for people who don't know HTML, but compared with the stuff we do at work, I think some parts of their engine could use some serious help.

Yanthor: I keep forgetting my login, so I'll post here again
2004-07-08 08:48:45

bouncing 's site is back.
2004-07-17 16:05:43

Yanthor: ...hmmm...bouncing, the same could be said about those who don't code their own sites from scratch. ;-)

Bitscape: Some people have no sense of humor, especially when it comes to governors. [www.voanews.com]
2004-07-19 16:05:32

Jäger: I would say that only girlie-men lack a sense of humor, but I suspect that would only make those insulted by the original comment even angrier.
2004-07-19 16:33:37

Kiesa: Since he meant to put the comment into a specific context (i.e. the old comedy routine) it is kind of ammusing. However, out of context it is a little insulting that adding "girlie" to man implies wimp.

Bitscape: According to a new report, most Americans have lost touch with what mainstream America is about. [www.theonion.com]

Bitscape: Hollywood has lost a great talent today. [www.reuters.com]

bouncing: Finally, a war we can all agree on! [theonion.com]
2004-07-23 11:40:40

Jäger: die qwest!
2004-07-23 13:27:24

Bitscape: What is the real reason so many liberals hate Bush? [www.yellowtimes.org]
2004-07-24 11:12:19

Bitscape: Gimp 2.0 is crazy cool!
2004-07-24 18:03:28

Jäger: You're just now playing with gimp-2.0?
2004-07-25 08:44:50

Bitscape: Yeah, and it rocks.
2004-07-25 13:24:30

Jäger: gimp-2.0 has been in Debian Unstable for ... months.
2004-07-25 15:10:01

Bitscape: The Democratic Party, in all its infinate wisdom, wants to make sure everything comes out as dull, bland, and homogenized as possible. Word is that even Gore is being censored. Lame. [politicalwire.com]
2004-07-26 16:36:06

Bitscape: Hasn't the party learned anything after the last 2 elections?
2004-07-26 16:37:27

Jäger watches "a woman of distinction and a wonderful star of the democratic party"
2004-07-26 20:23:41

Jäger: (aka carpet-bagging Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton)
2004-07-26 20:24:13

Jäger: I get really lousy C-SPAN on my basic cable (about par with a poor web video), but it's watchable.
2004-07-26 20:25:06

Yanthor: We have that problem too. For some reason our CSPAN channels have a reception similar to that in the movie Independence day. The channel is fine for a few seconds, then cycles through a weird sequence of vertical lines and during that time loses about half the video, then it goes back to clear for a few seconds.
2004-07-27 14:57:49

Yanthor: So we get about 2 seconds of good feed for every 10 seconds of viewing.
2004-07-27 14:58:09

Jäger: I found it fascinating that Clinton tried to take credit for the booming economy (which started failing while he was still president) and blamed Bush for a terrorist attack that occured nine months into his presidency.
2004-07-27 16:45:03

Bitscape: Why politics is depressing. [www.ariannaonline.com]
2004-07-27 18:03:05

Bitscape: and then there's the reasons to get excited about politics. [www.salon.com]
2004-07-27 18:10:30

Bitscape: On the hypothetical scenario that Clinton had continued for a third term, would the recession have been as bad? No one can definitively answer that question. I would suggest that spending billions on a costly war funded by deficit spending while lowering taxes for those who least need it is not a sound policy for long term prosperity.
2004-07-27 18:21:26

Bitscape: Then again, my more cynical side is inclined to believe that any politician will happily take credit for anything they think they can get away with, and blame any other plausible parties for bad things that happen.
2004-07-27 18:25:36

Bitscape: Howard Dean. Weakest speech ever. Obviously, he's going through the motions for "the greater good". At least the audience gave him a super-enthusiastic standing ovation. It's a shame he and Kerry's positions aren't reversed.
2004-07-27 19:26:51

Jäger: Well, not much can top the "I Have a Scream" speech.
2004-07-27 20:32:52

Bitscape: The Democratic Party is the left wing of fascism. [www.alternet.org]
2004-07-28 12:06:13

Bitscape: This article describes, as clearly as any, what we are up against. [www.kuro5hin.org]
2004-07-28 12:30:31

Bitscape: Are Democrats really any better than Bush? Where is the 4th Amendment? [news.yahoo.com]
2004-07-28 14:41:29

bouncing: Suppose the downward economy is partially due to increased oil prices. Regardless of responsibility for that, how in the world can we weather the next 100 years if our economy is on the skids due to a gentle increase in oil prices.
2004-07-28 17:10:01

bouncing: I guess my point is, there needs to be a way for everything not to fall apart, should the economy decline year after year, which could be possible.
2004-07-28 17:10:53

Bitscape: Our current way of life is unsustainable in the long term. Enjoy it while it lasts.
2004-07-28 18:46:05

bouncing: That is some tasty music.
2004-07-28 21:02:53

Jäger iPods the music
2004-07-29 09:23:23

bouncing: I hear Opie Gone Bad is pretty good
2004-07-29 13:45:52

Bitscape: If I was bored and didn't have anything else to do, I might go listen to them. The mp3s I heard on their site don't seem terribly exciting.
2004-07-29 17:23:47

Bitscape: Fascism in action. [www.salon.com]
2004-07-29 17:30:17

bouncing thinks that reflects some poor screening for SS agents.
2004-07-29 22:21:25

Humblik: FYI, Yanthor.net is experiencing some slight technical difficulties. The date was reset during the transfer and will need to be set correctly before posts will correctly display.
2004-07-30 23:30:08

Humblik: Perhaps the next project can be to get a timeserver that automatically sets the clock could come in handy for the future.
2004-07-30 23:32:24

Jäger noticed the time change. Two of my posts are hidden in two and a half years in the past.
2004-07-30 23:56:52

Jäger makes it to the Earth Temple in Wind Waker and decides he really shouldn't start another dungon this late at night.
2004-07-30 23:57:27

Linknoid: Technically, I could reset the clock on Chiana myself, but as that would involve rebooting Chiana, I wouldn't want to do that without Yanthor's permission. At least physical access allows ctrl-alt-del to do a proper shutdown/reboot in Redhat, I've never tried it in Gentoo. I assume it would be a kernel thing though?
