Introspection

Friday, May 30, 2003 04:17

Once again, I find that I have driven across town in the middle of the night with the sole motivation of typing a rambling. Inspiration strikes at wierd times. In this case, the word "struggle" might be more appropriate than "inspiration". I am having a minor quandry.

Tired + Hyped

Thursday, May 29, 2003 01:23

Today's shift at work was really irritating. From the moment I walked in until 2200, we were beseiged by an endless onslaught of customers almost nonstop. Grrr. (It probably didn't help that I got off to a late start due to becoming so engrossed in the Enter The Matrix game that I lost track of time; this doesn't happen very often.) On the bright side, Peter stopped by at 1900, and we ate "lunch" together as twilight engulfed the city of Boulder.

Dr. 1999, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Dot Bomb

Tuesday, May 27, 2003 10:59

I just got done with my brief interview with the newspaper sales agency. Filling out the application took longer than the interview itself. I'll be going in for training on Thursday.

Misanthropy

Tuesday, May 27, 2003 02:33

Mysanthropy, or why I hate my species.

Since I have a job interview tomorrow, it would be good to get to bed soon. (While it's almost a certainty that I will be hired for the newspaper job, I technically haven't been hired until I do the interview.) So it is only natural that I should run across a really fascinating book on the web, and get absorbed into reading it way past what should be my bedtime tonight.

As the Reverend's latest batch of discordantly luscious music pumps again through my headphones, I take to the web for another mindless romp.

The Matrix Reloaded (****)

Wednesday, May 21, 2003 23:51

Tonight, I met with Jaeger to watch The Matrix Reloaded again. Caugh more details this time, as well noticing some of the foreshadowing leading up to the revelation at the end.

Hollow Man (* 1/2)

Wednesday, May 21, 2003 18:33

A horror movie. A dumb horror movie. The type of dumb horror movie in which the cookie cutter characters are so stupid that you find yourself cheering when they each meet their miserable end, because the gene pool will be a better place without them. It almost makes the viewer wish the writers could meet the same fate as well, as this thing has more plot holes than lorraine swiss cheese.

Bound (*** 1/2)

Wednesday, May 21, 2003 04:29

Amidst this time of Matrix Reloaded celebration, on this night, I have watched this classic again. Reading over my previous log entries for this movie, there doesn't seem to be much to say that I didn't already write after previous viewings.

Today, I went into work and gave my 2 weeks notice as planned.

2 weeks notice?

Tuesday, May 20, 2003 01:29

This morning, I placed a call to the contact my dad gave me at the denver newspaper agency. I'll be going in to interview next week (a mere formality -- being hired is almost certainly assured, although being retained isn't), for orientation on May 30, going out to train with someone else on Friday, June 6, and starting work on Saturday, June 7. Life moves like lightning.

Dear diary...

Saturday, May 17, 2003 03:01

Again, I find myself seated in front of this console in the late hours of the night. It seems later than it really is, because I got off work earlier tonight. More time has passed since I arrived than usual.

And a Matrix rambling too!

Friday, May 16, 2003 01:44

I greatly enjoyed my day off today. (The first day I've had off work in over a week.) Most of it was spent indulging in my almost all-consuming Matrix obsession, which is just fine with me.

The Matrix Reloaded (****)

Friday, May 16, 2003 00:06

As we enter an era in which literally any visual that can be imagined, no matter how impossible, can be created on film with seamless clarity, the only limiting factor becomes the imagination of the film makers. In this spellbinding sequel, the Wachowski Brothers and their crew not only prove that they have an overwhelming abundance of inspiration, but after wowing the audience into a swoon, they top it off again with double the intensity, just for the sheer joy of it.

The Matrix (****)

Thursday, May 15, 2003 04:50

As of 0320, I just finished watching this astounding classic again. A few observations, which may have already been made by others, but I'm going to list them anyway.

Since we're all gearing up for Reloaded, I'm also going to try fielding a few speculations based on events and dialog in the this movie that could be construed as foreshadowing what might be to come. But then again, maybe not. Since I haven't seen Reloaded yet, I could be way off base. (Then again, some of this might also be subtly influenced by the recent press comments of Laurence Fishburne and Keanu Reeves, so if you're totally spoiler-phobic even to the point of avoiding speculation, don't read further.)

Son, you too will learn the ways of the Dark Side

Wednesday, May 14, 2003 02:32

Today, I again found myself disgusted, tired, and worn out. I don't like the way some things are happening at my current job. So it was that I realized a that potential opportunity which has been tossed in my lap should at least be given some serious consideration, even if I ultimately decide it is not for me.

Political discourse and opinion

Thursday, May 8, 2003 03:05

Tonight, a few words on politics, economic models, and power distribution. Who knows, I might even throw in another small dose of inflammatory trolling for good measure. But rest assured, the good old Bitscape is back, for the time being at least.

(If this trend of ramblings based on the results of the recent poll continues, we might even have another long-belated wedding chapter epic coming out soon. But don't hold your breath just yet. This stuff requires psychological energy, and work these days has been doing everything it can to drain me dry. Nevertheless, I persist...)

Shoutouts

Linknoid just finished watching season 2 of B5.
2003-05-01 02:11:58

Linknoid: Insanity...that was probably 15 hours straight.
2003-05-01 02:13:26

Bitscape: lol. wow.
2003-05-01 04:09:12

Bitscape: I haven't even started in on the B5 set yet, but I'll get to it soon enough.
2003-05-01 04:09:45

Bitscape: Cool. Jaeger's changelog html source uses the same html formatting that I use in my ramblings. [jaeger.festing.org]
2003-05-05 00:30:35

Bitscape: Unemployment. Do you have what it takes? [www.salon.com]
2003-05-13 00:15:15

Linknoid: Unfortunately, reading the rest of the article requires flash to view the ad.
2003-05-14 00:54:04

Bitscape: Doh. On certain days, they do that. Others, they don't. That sucks.
2003-05-14 02:33:11

Bitscape: I actually broke down a couple months ago and did the paid subscription thing. This is both because it's more convenient to read that way, and because I like to support good journalism. But I would feel much better about it if they didn't lock the content away from everybody else. (This problem is partially solved by having the ads, but when they're obnoxious enough to require flash ads, I can't view them without undue trouble either. I wish they'd fix that.)
2003-05-14 02:37:37

Linknoid: I'd probably subscribe if I actually read it. As it is, I probably read 2 or 3 articles there a year.
2003-05-14 18:46:24

scott: [www.studentjobs.gov] this cracked me up.. the first words i saw we're "your journey to success begins here - - Federal Bureau of Prisons" hmmm. odd foreshadowing .. maybe for ted's career. :)

Bitscape hereby formally announces that he will be arriving at the Colony Square 12 theater in Louisville tonight at 1700 MDT to wait in line for the 1900 showing. Anyone who wants to look for me there is welcemo to join.
2003-05-15 12:50:53

Bitscape: That should say "welcome".
2003-05-15 12:51:22

bouncing: Interesting account on the events here in Texas:[www.salon.com]
2003-05-15 16:58:28

drizzt: reloaded requires multiple viewings to absorb all of it.
2003-05-16 15:38:48

drizzt: that is odd that people would find it disappointing. it wasn't what i suspected but it for sure was not disappointing. it'll only get better with multiple viewings, much like the two towers.
2003-05-16 15:41:01

Linknoid: Car ogg player? Let me know if you can find one, I couldn't find any in many searches I did a few months ago.
2003-05-17 07:47:34

Linknoid: I was thinking about building my own from scratch, but too many challenges (including the problem of very high temperatures in the summer).
2003-05-17 07:48:29

Bitscape: I too have looked, I have not found any prefab units that will play ogg. That's one of the reasons I put off buying one. Eventually, I'm hoping some manufacturer will get smart enough to make one, or I may get ambitious and build my own.
2003-05-18 00:53:44

Bitscape: Good point about the temperatures though. It is a tricky problem.
2003-05-18 00:54:33

Yanthor: One main reason I decided to re-encode our MP3 collection as 192kbit/s MP3 this time through instead of choosing anothe format was because MP3 is the standard and it would be a lot harder to get a home stereo system or car stereo in another format. I also chose the 192kbit/s speed so it would sound better on better stereos like home or car.
2003-05-21 12:11:04

Linknoid: I encode my CDs into quality 8 oggs, about a 4:1 compression, and then recode them into much lower quality mp3s (64-128 VBR) for my portable mp3 player
2003-05-21 20:35:13

drizzt: has acquired employment after about a monthand a half of being dirt broke and donating plasma for gas beer and taco bell. hahahah

2003-05-29 01:44:07

Yanthor: Congrats, Drizzt. I had to chuckle at your description of being out of work. :-)
2003-05-30 14:26:00

Linknoid: Bitscape, your attitude against doing high pressure sales is exactly the way I've felt ever since I spent a summer selling books door to door. Before that, I don't know that I cared.
2003-05-30 21:29:47

Linknoid: My grandpa on my dad's side was a full time colpourter, selling Adventist books in Utah to Mormons :-) and he was the top seller in North America for quite a few years.
2003-05-30 21:31:49

Linknoid: But growing up, we lived in the country, so we almost never got any salesmen (I recall one year we got a trick-or-treater at halloween).
2003-05-30 21:32:54

Jäger: Don't forget that Simulacra and Simulation was the book Neo pulled the disks out of to give to the guy at his door.
