Them's the breaks

Friday, June 27, 2003 20:21

I spent all day in king soopers today, and sold a whopping 1 subscription. That should be about enough to pay for the gas I used to drive to Aurora, my lunch bill, plus a little spare change to throw around. On a day like this, I question whether quitting the deli was such a good idea.

Unweekend

Monday, June 23, 2003 22:39

My Unweekend is underway. Since I have nothing work-related that needs to happen until Thursday night, I find myself with more free time on my hands than I've had in a long time. The past few weeks have been booked nearly solid for me, so I've almost forgotten about this thing called "free time", where nothing specific has been scheduled.

North behind, south ahead

Friday, June 20, 2003 20:56

Sold 10 discount subs today. Not bad for a Friday. Not bad at all. Loveland was good to me. (It didn't hurt that I was able to offer the super extra discounted versions, plus free Safeway gift cards with purchase to residents of outlying counties, a deal not available in the main metro area. I wish we could do that everywhere.)

Tobias Happy Now

Thursday, June 19, 2003 22:10

Yesterday, Tobias went back to Stan's, where the wheel work was completed. After dropping him off, I wandered on foot over to the Colony Square, saw Finding Nemo, and ate lunch at Tokyo Joe's.

Pixar's latest is a fun movie. Nemo, a little fish, gets taken away from his home, so his dad goes on a big adventure looking for him. It's got the Pixar magic touch. So hit the dope.

Last day in the deli

It was pretty much just like any other day there. Another day at work. But my last. How strange.

The die is cast

Tuesday, June 17, 2003 01:58

Besides getting to sleep in for the first time in a week, I spent the morning trying to decide what to do with regard to my employment for the near future. As documented in my last rambling, the decision was not nearly as easy or clear cut as I had anticipated. But I knew I needed to have something ready to say to management at the deli when I arrived. By the time I left for work, I knew what my message would be.

Indecision

Saturday, June 14, 2003 20:31

Today, having made almost $150 over the course of 11 hours, I feel a little better. Averaging what I made today with the earnings of yesterday, it comes out to almost $10/hour. If we assume that this is to be the approximate norm for the foreseeable future (a somewhat shaky assumption, given the wild fluctuations that are possible), then I have a tricky decision to make.

Get Motivated

Thursday, June 12, 2003 14:34

Don't ask why, because I don't know anymore. But at 9am today, I found myself at the Denver Colosseum, waiting amidst a very long line of cars for entrance to the parking lot. The event? "Get Motivated." A day-long seminar featuring a bunch of much-lauded speakers who would motivate the people of Denver to greatness. Or something like that.

Tobias goes to the doctor

Wednesday, June 11, 2003 18:50

This morning, I got up and drove Tobias to get his wheels realigned and oil changed. He's developed a nasty habit of pulling to the left, and since he had his 30000th birthmile last weekend, I decided it was waaaay past time to get him his first wheel realignment. (One is normally supposed to do it about every 7500 miles or so, so it would be correct to say I have been grossly negligent with regard to that matter.)

Further developments in the deli drama

Wednesday, June 11, 2003 03:45

Today, working with a different subset of the crew, I heard a little more which caused me to alter my view somewhat. I didn't have all the facts yesterday. I still don't have all the facts. I'm just a babbling idiot on the sidelines. So here goes.

Second day selling papers

Sunday, June 8, 2003 21:54

This marks the conclusion of my second day selling subscriptions for the Denver Newspaper Agency. Though I sold less subscriptions today (7) than yesterday (9), I made more money this time. This due to the fact that 3 of the orders I sold today were for 7-day subscriptions instead of all weekend only orders today. Since I'm under 25, no bonuses for me this week though. :(

Animated DVD fun

Thursday, June 5, 2003 02:07

Yesterday, I went to Best Buy where I acquired the Animatrix DVD. While I was there, I also went browsing, and couldn't resist a couple other items I ran across. Family Guy, Volume 1 and Spirited Away.

DVDs. They're my addiction. But at least it's a less expensive habit than crack cocaine.

Simulating the end of my deli career

Monday, June 2, 2003 01:34

Did another shift at the deli today. Despite attempts to the otherwise, I'm finding it harder and harder to make myself care whether I'm even doing a good job there anymore. I merely go through the motions as my sentence nears its probable end. I just want it to be over, and the next phase of my career evolution to begin.

Shoutouts

Bitscape: Yes it was.
2003-06-01 00:03:12

bouncing: First of all, you'll make more sales if you're confident, regardless of your pitch. But really, by not asking them "yes or no" you do little more than default a checkbox. No one is going to give you their cc number if they don't want a paper.
2003-06-01 23:15:07

bouncing: Secondly, a "yes/no" question is high pressure -- the customer MUST decide then and there whether s/he wants to buy. If you're not entirely sure, the easiest thing to do is just to say "no thanks"
2003-06-01 23:17:39

bouncing: It's a common and reasonable practice to simply let the customer end the process when she is ready, either by buying or withdrawing. You're letting them decide when they want to terminate the sales process.
2003-06-01 23:20:09

Bitscape nods.
2003-06-02 00:12:19

Bitscape: I think I have a tendency to be hypersensitive with such matters sometimes. After having been to one of the meetings, and watched another person in action for a while, I don't think there's any problem with this deal. (Although I may still need to work on some of my own passive tendencies if I am to do well.)
2003-06-02 00:21:58

Linknoid: Are you claiming that I've been living under a rock in Afghanistan? I had no clue what the Animatrix is I didn't even know it was connected to The Matrix in any way.
2003-06-05 10:53:55

Linknoid: Insurance: definitely go for Progressive. They have a good reputation, and while I'm paying $50-100 more than I did in Nebraska, it's about 1/4 of what Farmers was going to charge me ($1200 for 6 months).
2003-06-05 11:19:57

Linknoid: Progressive was also basically the only insurance company that would give me an immediate quote over the internet. The rest said, give us your phone number, and an agent will contact you.
2003-06-05 11:21:14

Bitscape: Cool, thanks for the referral. It's good to know that you people in Afghanistan are knowledgable about car insurance companies. ;)
2003-06-05 19:41:38

Jani ("Captain" Willy's friend: Great jog reviewing that DVD. I also think Family Guy is hilarious.
2003-06-07 14:20:36

Bitscape: The Birds was quite a wacky movie. I rather enjoyed it. (Regrettably, I didn't bother to movielog it, but it was mentioned in passing at [bitscape.org] )
2003-06-09 09:21:26

Zan Lynx: Bitscape can use his four day weekends to write content! With so much time, we could have two, nay, three updates per day!
2003-06-09 18:25:38

Bitscape: lol.
2003-06-10 00:45:54

Linknoid remembers when Bitscape was posting at least that often. Unfortunately, it wasn't very indicative of him being in good mental health.
2003-06-10 17:53:55

Jäger notes that xmatrix has upgraded to include stuff from The Matrix: Reloaded
2003-06-10 22:37:22

Jäger: Go Gaijin! [www.gaijin.com]
2003-06-11 22:47:59

Jäger: Mortals were not designed to be awake this early.
2003-06-13 04:32:53

bouncing: in tobias goes to the doc, you have a /p> in there at random.
2003-06-13 12:06:41

Bitscape: oops, thanks
2003-06-13 15:45:44

Linknoid: When I sold books door to door, there were just certain people who could just relate, who were just naturals.
2003-06-14 20:36:34

Linknoid: Attractive females definitely have a natural advantage, especially the short cute ones.
2003-06-14 20:37:03

Linknoid: But there were a couple guys who could just relate to people really well, I guess, and they almost always had the best sales.
2003-06-14 20:37:43

Linknoid: I think another thing that helps is truly believing in the product you're selling. People who had had life changing experiences because of the books we were selling were much better because of that.
2003-06-14 20:38:55

bouncing: Ever watched those "Home Shopping" networks? Now there's some insight into what used to be called "pitchmen" -- selling to people, assuming their emotional reactions, without ever seeing them!
2003-06-14 22:53:11

bouncing: Ever notice how sales people love to talk about all the other people buying products? "A about your age, attractive, picked up one of these for her boyfriend" or "this one is our most popular model." -- interesting sociology there.
2003-06-14 22:56:08

drizzt: bitscape and jager: nat is headed your way this weekend, she gets in friday evening. anyway can the two of you e-mail your phone numbers
2003-06-17 07:10:06

drizzt: she isn't sure zulia has gotten her message about when she's getting in and is afraid of getting stranded at the airport. i would think zulia would have answered by now.
2003-06-17 07:11:21

drizzt: anyway, thanks for your most precious time......

2003-06-17 21:54:40

Bitscape: drizzt, you still have the same email address since you switched jobs? I'll send it there, but just in case.. my phone is 303-618-3936.
2003-06-18 00:02:33

2003-06-18 20:51:51

drizzt: however, my work address is different. anyway, i guess nat will see you guys this weekend most likely. anyone going to see the hulk? nat may want to see it while she's up there if she has time. anyway, everyone take care later

scott: buy some webhosting. all the cool kids are doing it.
2003-06-19 01:47:29

Humblik: Oh, yeah. Jaeger I finally verified the rumor that Zulia is getting married. She wrote me back two weeks ago saying she is getting married in two weeks and was very busy. It was then reconfirmed a week later by Vickie.
2003-06-20 17:12:45

Humblik seems to be a little in his new news. :-0
2003-06-20 17:14:10

Humblik: little slow that is
2003-06-20 17:29:24

Jäger: Did you happen to learn that the guy she's marrying (this coming Sunday) is twice her age?
2003-06-20 17:31:55

Humblik: Yeah, that was included in the rumor you had mentioned to me.
2003-06-21 02:01:52

Jäger prepares to watch his ex-girlfriend marry a man twice her age
2003-06-22 14:44:32

Humblik wonders if he will ever get married.
2003-06-23 01:36:29

Humblik: Is it worth effort and commitment?
2003-06-23 01:37:44

Jäger: Yes.
2003-06-23 07:07:58

Yanthor: Yes. (I'm supposed to say that)
2003-06-23 10:08:52

Jäger: (I'm saying that honestly, regardless of what the "party line" might be.)
2003-06-23 18:10:17

Humblik: What's you're vote Drizzt?
2003-06-24 13:13:08

Yanthor: Anya gave me Kiln People for Christmas but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. It looks really good.
2003-06-24 14:27:12

Ballot Stuffer: Stuffing the ballot box gives some very amusing button titles
2003-06-25 11:35:29

Yanthor: Um, but isn't stuffing the ballot box unethical?
2003-06-25 12:44:18

Ballot Stuffer: NO! Not when it is specifically allowed, and Bitscape specifically allows it! You're a prude.
2003-06-25 13:14:35

Yanthor: I am NOT a prude! I'm you! If I could just get rid of this stupid bought of schizophrenia you'd never exist again!!
2003-06-25 13:16:44

Bitscape: lol
2003-06-25 15:17:59

Bitscape: Yanthor, did you make a frankie ditto today?
2003-06-25 15:18:29

IMaBS2: I find ballot stuffing most entertaining too.
2003-06-26 13:11:22

Humblik doesn't care to know how many times his system has been compremized, but probably should.
2003-06-26 13:12:44

Humblik doesn't care to know how many times his system has been comprimised, but probably should.
2003-06-26 13:14:01

Humblik just had deja vu.
2003-06-26 13:21:34

Yanthor: Huh? What do you mean by, "Frankie Ditto?"
2003-06-26 18:06:54

Jäger: Read Kiln People, and pay special attention to Tuesday's green.
2003-06-26 22:40:30

Linknoid: [selectsmart.com]
2003-06-26 23:32:16

Linknoid: That was my highest ranked candidate, and that was 88%, GWB got 19%, and Lyndon LaRouche got -6% :-)
2003-06-26 23:34:45

Bitscape: Yeah, I like Dennis Kucinich too. However, I think Howard Dean has a better chance of getting elected by the general populace. He's more of a centrist, while still being palettable enough for the left to rally around.
2003-06-27 20:23:43

Humblik: I'm curious how many Republicans selectsmart.com has entered in information for.
2003-06-28 12:39:10

Humblik: I intentionally tried to select Republican attributes, but only managed to get three of them. Bush was at the top though at 100%. The next closest was Biden, Senator Joe, DE - Democrat (69%).
2003-06-28 12:42:44

Humblik: They were options one and two. I didn't mean they were both Republicans.
2003-06-28 12:44:28

Bitscape: How many republican challengers does Bush have for 2004? If there are any, I haven't heard about them.
2003-06-28 14:08:41

Jäger: Unless the economy seriously dies in the next twelve months, challenging Bush for republican presidential nominee would be a futile gesture.
2003-06-28 23:39:27

Yanthor: I finally took that presidential test. I had Libertarian come up first, Howard Dean second, and Bush at 6th place behind several other Democrats.
2003-06-30 08:22:40

bouncing: I've come to the conclusion that Green Party is great, but SOME democrats (Dean being one of them) are worthwhile.
2003-06-30 22:50:55

bouncing: There is alot to be said for a party which takes no corporate contributions. Ever wonder where the Republican Party gets is money?
2003-06-30 22:56:07
