Ramble of the week

Saturday, November 30, 2002 00:49

It would seem that the typical frequency with which I write my ramblings has gradually degenerated to once every week. With that in mind, I now find that it has been an entire week since the last one. So I figure I'll write one tonight, in which I shall document various odds and ends, and, well, ramble. Of course.

Burning the oil

Saturday, November 23, 2002 03:46

I see an idealized Hollywood fairytale vision of my life at this stage of evolution. In this vision, by day, I am the lowly but efficient deli clerk who slices up the meat with one hand, rings up a customer with the other, checks the backstock to make sure everything is in order, and simultaniously manages to casually flirt with a few of the pretty girls who happen to wander by. Always on top of things, and always excelling at the game.

As soon as I punch out, my character transforms into the 1337 H4X0R d00d known as Bitscape (among other more s3kr1t handles), who can jack into the net and instantly become omnipotent as well as omniscient. Give me a perl interpretor and I'll give you an interactive web discussion board. Give me a Linux box and I'll become God. Give me a web page with a few readers, and I'll write prose to sway the minds of thousands. We will subvert the system from beneath itself.

That's the fantasy. (He can be played by Kevin Sorbo, if you like.) The reality...

Shifting and changing

Monday, November 18, 2002 23:51

[Bitscape munches on buffalo wings purchased at Safeway. Given that he is now a King Soopers employee, he revels in this act of shameless treason. Yum yum.]

The Ring (***)

Monday, November 11, 2002 00:37

Some pretty creepy, morbid stuff. In many ways, it's a typical horror movie, but there are some interesting twists. The ending left me feeling.... rather wacked out. That is some bizarre imagery.

and... cut

Saturday, November 9, 2002 21:20

I'm almost embarrassed to admit this, because it doesn't seem like I've been watching like such a madman. But somehow or another, I have gone through all of the B5 season 1 episodes. How many days have passed since it came out on Tuesday? This is nuts. But the story is just starting to get underway. Now I want season 2!

Post-work Winding

Thursday, November 7, 2002 23:58

After one 32 hour week at it, I think I'm finally starting to get into the "rhythm" of my new job. It ain't bad. I didn't have to ask as many constant questions today, and when I know where things are and how stuff is done, it gets easier. The whole "customer service" thing ain't half bad either, especially when the customers happen to be cute females. :)

The spec of insanity

It's that tiny little thought, that blossoms into an idea, culminating into action, which makes you just go out and do something totally insane.

Republicans in office

Wednesday, November 6, 2002 00:31

After getting off work, I tuned in to find out the results of the election. Looks like the republicans have won most everything. Though my reaction is not as extreme as, say, Elusis, I do not believe it bodes well that a single party (which, as a whole, has shown little regard for the civil liberties of the people of this country) has gained simultanious control of the house, senate, and presidency. We'll see.

Voting with ballots and dollars

Tuesday, November 5, 2002 12:14

I have just returned from an expedition to the voting booth, followed by the Temptation Zone. My voting consisted of a rather quirky combination of idealism and pragmatism. I ultimately decided to vote for Tom Strickland (democrat) for U.S. Senate, re-elect Bill Owens (republican) for governor, and mostly libertarian for various other representative positions, and abstaining from several other races of which I am totally ignorant. I am relatively pleased with the ballot I cast.

VOTE on Tuesday (or something like that)

Monday, November 4, 2002 22:18

Yep, tomorrow is election day. I plan to go out and vote in the morning. I am displeased to conclude that even now, I'm still not sure who or what I'll vote for. Obviously, the race that's been getting the most press around here lately is the Senate. Tom Strickland and Wayne Allard are neck-n-neck in the polls, so I would be tempted to try to use my vote to tip the balance one way or the other. Alas, I don't particularly like either candidate.

First day in the grocery deli

Sunday, November 3, 2002 18:43

Having now completed my first day of work in the grocery deli, I think I'm ready to sit on the couch and plop. Incedentially, that happens to be exactly what I am doing right now. Maybe I'll watch a movie in a bit.

Resting between an old end and a new beginning

Friday, November 1, 2002 19:21

I am now sitting in what has become my corner of the Laser Fortress Apartment. I just booted Argo. No network yet. I'm sure I'll devise some insane cable-running scheme sooner or later. But right now, I'm just enjoying resting here on my couch, crammed up next to my little desk (where Dagobah formerly lived), with some Tori oggs playing softly over my speakers before my dad gets home. It's quite comfy, really.

Shoutouts

drizzt: nat and i are moved and mostly settled in our new house.
2002-11-01 09:14:49

Yanthor: Yeah, even more interesting, look at Jerry Doyle and Andrea Thompson's marriage dates. They got married right about the time she left the show, which means they were getting interested in each other and dating during the last season or so she was on the show. So that scene when they are in an elevator, and you see Garibaldi look at her butt and slightly smile right before she hits him HARD, there were probably dating at the time. :-)
2002-11-01 10:00:44

Yanthor: Yes, season 5 isn't as intricate as season 4. Most of that is because they thought they were going to be cancelled after season 4, so JMS was cramming 2 seasons of material into one season. Then right before the final episode aired, they were pickedup by TNT, so they quick made another episode (season 4 finale) and sat of the final episode for a year.
2002-11-01 10:02:06

Yanthor: So season 5 ended up being more about the characters. I think it is a little more relaxing with much deeper insights into the characters. I don't enjoy the story lines quite as much, but they are still good! Plus, you get GREAT insights into Garibaldi, J'Kar, and ESPECIALLY Londo! Oh, and Vir! Anyway, I still maintain it is a good watch. Much better than a lot of the mediocre episodes of reworked themes you see on TV now.

bouncing: meatspace? I thought you were a vegetarian?
2002-11-02 09:00:06

bouncing has a rather nasty cold.
2002-11-02 10:57:35

Linknoid: I don't know about Yanthor, but I was familiar with the term meatspace before I met Jaeger, but didn't really start using it until I heard it in common use
2002-11-02 12:21:53

Linknoid: Bitscape, maybe the headache could have been caused by being outside a lot in the cold? I know I used to get minor headaches from going back and forth between extreme temperatures while at Union
2002-11-02 12:23:50

Bitscape: I theorize that it was caused by Argo's lack of broadband. Now Argo is online, and I'm feeling fine. :)
2002-11-02 19:47:40

Jäger: yeah, broadband withdrawl will get to you

drizzt: did anyone see ep. II IMAX? just wondering if it was worth seeing. although i'll probably check it out either way.
2002-11-06 11:34:13

Linknoid: I haven't even seen episode II, period. Maybe in a few years
2002-11-06 22:37:19

Jäger: For extra entertainment, watch B5 dubbed in French. It's great!
2002-11-06 23:21:18

Bitscape: Ahahah. Sinclair sounds like such a dork on the french track. That's hilarious.
2002-11-07 00:10:06

Yanthor: We haven't gotten the B5 on DVD release yet, although we plan to. The reason is simply money.
2002-11-07 10:55:22

Linknoid: I was going to comment on the mystery shopper thing, but I guess Kiesa beat me to it.
2002-11-07 20:39:46

Linknoid: One thing I could point out, when you work in a service industry, you're being paid to act a certain way towards the customers. Therefore, observing how you act to them would seem the most logical way of evaluating performance.
2002-11-07 20:41:15

Linknoid: And as Jaeger already mentioned, if you know you're being observed, it affects how you act. Don't look at performance evaluating as an act of distrust. It's just something that goes with having a job.
2002-11-07 20:44:28

Bitscape: Yeah, I suppose that works.
2002-11-07 23:30:06

2002-11-08 14:36:20

drizzt: i believe the massive amount of credits is due to the addition of all the fan credits. if i'm not mistaken all the fans who wrote or in some way added their two cents to the project were acknowledged at the end of the film.
