Disturbing, disturbed, and on with my (lack of a) life

Thursday, May 31, 2001 22:17

Just got through watching the director's commentary on Requiem for a Dream. A really interesting commentary track, during which Darren Aronofsky points out many of the subliminal (and not so subliminal) filming techniques employed to make the film into the total mind warp experience that it is. (He even points out several scenes where budgetary requirements forced the crew to resort to the technique of "guerilla" film making. I'm sure at least one reader in this audience would know something about that. ;) It is truly a work of masterful craftmanship though.

Requiem for a Dream (*** 1/2)

Wednesday, May 30, 2001 22:51

Rarely do I go out and purchase a film without having seen any of it, not even trailers. This one was an exception. Given the (almost) unanimous praise from others, coupled with the knowledge that one of the cast has a leading role in another of my favorite films, I decided to skip the rental phase. (I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to figure out which cast member that is. Of course, this assumes that readers -- or anybody -- ever feel like exercising at all in this day and age. A dubious assumption I know.) So, on my way home from work, I managed to get my hands on the last copy Best Buy had for sale.

Random packet noise as proof that Bitscape still exists

And your ratings drop and you're forgotten
If they kill you on their tv
You're a martyr and the Lamb of God

Starting over

Sunday, May 27, 2001 03:33

Alright, I had a nice several paragraph rambling partially typed -- over the course of the past two+ hours. In it, I said what amounted to very little. I may or may not post the text of it. Haven't decided yet. If I have so little to say, what have I started up a second rambling? lol.

Bitscape buys Mulder food, rearranges room (sort of)

Sunday, May 27, 2001 02:29

Tonight when I went to the store, I got a nice BIG bag of sunflower seeds, so this time, I hopefully won't run out so quickly. Seeds are so great! They taste yummy, you can eat through many an X Files episode without getting full (or reaching the bottom of the bag), and as a souvenir, you get a nice big pile of remains after you're done. (A feature, not a bug. Hah!)

I need more seeds

Thursday, May 24, 2001 23:58

I ran out of Mulder food. My bag is empty, but it sits on my desk next to the keyboard, teasing me to reach my hand in, just on the off-chance that there might be a little bit left. But there isn't. Just an empty bag, and a messy pile of shells. Woe is me.

Bzzzzzzzzzzt

Sunday, May 20, 2001 22:38

And what could I say about tonight's season finale? Um... To me, it seems like the show has lost some of the psychological intensity it had in earlier years. Maybe it was just my mood. I dunno. But when Doggett, Skinner, Mulder, Krycek, and those other guys were chasing each other around the building, I was thinking, "Were it not for the fact that I already knew otherwise, this could be just about any random cop show."

Shrek (*** 1/2)

Sunday, May 20, 2001 21:53

With this movie, we have what is arguably the best CGI animation to date. Fluidly rendered faces -- human faces -- landscapes, animals, castles, and, um, fairy tale characters. Lots of fairy tale characters.

Antitrust (***)

Saturday, May 19, 2001 01:12

Since I've actually reviewed this movie before, I think this time I'll just babble about random things on the periphery that happen to pop into my mind. That's not to that I wouldn't just do that anyway.

I must be losing it

As the Disc Turns...

Saturday, May 12, 2001 01:16

And so, I must admit the obvious, and say that my ramblings frequency seems to have decreased of late. As to the true reason for this, speculation abounds (or so my own mind would have me believe), but a single conclusive answer has yet to be found. Carry on.

Having downloaded Mozilla 0.9 a few hours ago, I hereby dub it the best browser yet. The trend towards zippier, snappier, and more responsive which has been progressing through the last several versions continues. As most probably already know, they redid the cache, libpr0n, and all that good stuff for this version.

I just discovered that today, my order arrived at least! Two games, hot off the presses from Loki. Interestingly enough, packaged in less bulky, but very cool DVD style cases. So if I disappear without a trace, for, say, a month, everyone will now know why. :)

Linknoid: Hey Bitscape, last night when you sent me the burrito, I think a different protocol layer would be in order, www.blug.linux.no] It may have required a lot of packets to transmit a burrito, but at least it would have arrived.
2001-05-01 07:14:11-06

Bitscape: Or I could just have pigeons carry the burrito directly. (Assuming they don't try to eat it.)
2001-05-01 18:35:37-06

Bitscape: Well, bakterium.com certainly seems to be going crazy with the content.

Humblik: Of Black & White I mean.
2001-05-09 00:54:03-06

bse: black & white for linux?! oooooh..
2001-05-09 07:46:55-06

Jäger: Sorry, I played the cracked windows version. I'd love a Linux version, although that'd mean I have no more ability to be useful...
2001-05-09 08:40:54-06

Humblik: I'd be willing to settle for the cracked version.
2001-05-09 12:57:08-06

2001-05-09 14:00:23-06

2001-05-18 10:57:58-06

2001-05-22 16:32:37-06

Bitscape: Since mass irc wasn't possible last night, anybody feel like having it tonight?
2001-05-22 17:33:47-06

Bitscape: Well, I think I'll wander into #fest at around 2100 MDT tonight (Tuesday), and if anybody else happens to wander by, then perhaps it will be a (not so) massive irc.
2001-05-22 17:34:42-06

Bitscape: Grrrr... Salon now has annoying popups along WITH those huge middle-page ads. It seems they are on a mission to make the adds SO excessively annoying that people either: (a) Get a paid subscription, or (b) Quit reading and find another site to browse.
2001-05-23 07:11:05-06

Jäger usually reads the mobile version of Salon, which is frequently a day behind (at least at 0800 PDT) but is without obnoxious ads.
2001-05-23 08:47:20-06

Bitscape: Well the ads there never used to be nearly as annoying until just recently.
2001-05-23 18:40:22-06

bse: goddamn it is hot here.. 10am, and i cant sleep...
2001-05-24 03:05:51-06

2001-05-24 19:31:48-06

Humblik: It actually pretty cold here.
2001-05-24 22:29:42-06

Jäger: Sorry about that. I had to recover the zone files from backup and i lost that host. It should be in now.
2001-05-24 22:31:01-06

Jäger: Sorry about that. I had to recover the zone files from backup and i lost that host. It should be in now.
2001-05-24 22:31:02-06

Bitscape: Um, now postgres socket connections are failing.
2001-05-25 00:01:00-06

Bitscape: Hmmm, perhaps this would be better resolved in a place other than Content Solutions.
2001-05-25 00:02:07-06

Bitscape: Theoretical hope: The more people that get fed up with Microsoft's increasingly draconian licensing and registration schemes, the more they will consider looking at open source alternatives such as Linux, KDE, KOffice, and AbiWord. Or is that too optimistic?
2001-05-25 06:47:54-06

Kiesa: Depends who you mean by people. The open source alternatives are way too confusing the ordinary user. Especially since those who could fix that problem think the command line is the one true way ;)
2001-05-25 09:37:37-06

Neelix: lol
2001-05-25 18:04:42-06

bouncing: I don't know Bitscape. It has come to my attention that Microsoft has 'software for the agile business.' Is there any Open Souce software that is for the AGILE business?
2001-05-27 21:25:44-06

bouncing: Again, that's "Software for the Agile Business"
2001-05-27 21:26:37-06

bouncing: AAGGIILLEE
2001-05-27 21:27:01-06

Jäger: Microsoft only has software for the agile business that nonetheless wants to subject itself to someone else's software development cycle.
2001-05-28 14:04:39-06

Bitscape: I think what we need are Agile Business Turnkey Solutions.
2001-05-28 15:26:15-06

bouncing: I take it everyone has been to the web economy bullshit generator? [www.dack.com]
2001-05-28 15:41:45-06

2001-05-29 22:11:22-06

Shadowkiller: Poe Rulez! We need more Poe in the jukebox.
2001-05-30 15:44:31-06

Bitscape: Jaeger, I have the perfect Madonna song to go with the title of your latest Changelog!
2001-05-31 22:19:11-06

Bitscape: (Hint: It's from her debut album.)
