Gosford Park (*** 1/2)

Thursday, January 31, 2002 23:19

I have to cop a plea of clueless on this one. For most of the duration of the movie, I was lost. There are so many characters, names, subplots, and nuances whose significance does not become apparent until much later on, that I was left scratching my head in more scenes than not. Even so, this movie left a strong impression.

Eulogy, random stuff

Thursday, January 31, 2002 19:09

I remember the first game I bought from Loki. The year was 1999. Once I heard it announced on Slashdot, I anticipated for many weeks the release of Civilation: Call to Power. After a few unsuccessful attempts to buy it at CompUSA, I finally managed to get it one day. It provided me with many days (and nights) of entertainment building empires.

Sixteen Candles (** 1/2)

Wednesday, January 30, 2002 22:55

High school kids in the 80s. Relatively funny. Lots of amusing moments. Fairly predictible plot. Apparently, some people consider it a classic. Perhaps that's because it was made before the "teen movie" genre became a tired cliché. See it for the cultural history, or something like that.

The Dish (*** 1/2)

Saturday, January 26, 2002 22:07

This movie portrays an aspect of the historic Apollo 11 mission that almost nobody knew about. In an obsure sheepherding village in Australia was the dish which would receive the television transmission of the moon landing. Tended by several local scientists, an ambassador from NASA, and a gaggle of humorously eccentric smalltown people, it was the only facility on "that" side of the world capable of receiving televised images from space.

A resurgence of NIN mania?

Thursday, January 24, 2002 23:40

Sweetness.

Anyway, I the NIN disc into the player again tonight, thinking I would watch a few tracks, but it was so entrancing, I ended up watching the whole concert again. Amazing, powerful stuff.

Um, actually no, the title is not referring to a recently released epic adventure movie based on the books of J.R.R. Tolkien. This would be the other J. The Michael Straczynski one. You know, the television genius who created the show everyone has been clamoring for in hopes of a DVD release. Babylon 5. This new tv movie installment: Legend of the Rangers.

Slashdot moderation controversy

Friday, January 18, 2002 19:14

For some unknown reason, my body decided to become conscious at around 0400 this morning. I decided that sleep in the very near future was hopeless, and stumbled across the room to Argo to surf a bit.

What I found was a piece of history being made. (At least it qualifies as something resembling "history" in the minds of a bunch geeks who have nothing better to do than sit around and debate endlessly on concepts such as karma, thresholds, and the essence of a perfect troll.)

Joss Whedon is a television genius!

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (***)

Saturday, January 12, 2002 22:15

David Lynch king of the world of non sequitur morbid incomprehensible film making. It creeps and terrorizes down to the core of the human soul. Absolutely bizarre. I don't have a clue what any of it meant.

Maybe more than 1 sentence, but not much more, because in a few minutes, I'll be heading off to the cinema. As to which cinema it will be, I'm still deciding, but there's a 90% chance my choice will have been influenced by a content solutions poster known as drizzt.

[Bitscape gets totally distracted messing with the DVD player, and watches the last several scenes of Moulin Rouge again, and becomes preoccupied with rewatching the second-to-last shot in the movie several times, a reverse B5-style pushin night-to-day interior / exterior / interior / pan which seamlessly combines.... way, way too many elements.]

Blow Out (**)

Saturday, January 5, 2002 00:06

John Travolta (a much younger John Travolta) plays the accidental "ear-witness" to a politically motivated murder. Nancy Allen plays a phenomenally ditsy sidekick / love interest, whose stupidity turns the scene intended as a suspenseful climax into a near-comedic head-smacking fest. (My thought: "What does he see in this dopeface, anyway? If she does die after so many idiotic moves, then Darwinism will have run its proper course.")

2002

Wednesday, January 2, 2002 00:33

I know what all the loyal content vultures have been waiting for. (At least I can theorize that I do.) Today is Jaunary 1st, 2002. The day when I draft the mighty and momentous set of resolutions which supposably serve to direct and improve selected areas of my life over the course of the next 12 months. Well guess what? It's 22:42 localtime, and the day of January 1 is nearly over.

Humblik does some quick math. Those math inclined might want to double check this.
2002-01-05 00:49:48-07

Humblik: That gives roughly 1,164,567,176,370,552 Miles^3 of pixels if we have 64 pixels per inch.

Linknoid: I guess I should have spoken more clearly. What I really intended to mean (but it didn't come out that way) was that it was the most common non-trivial word, but I'm suprised at how high it ranks among the trivial words
2002-01-09 16:39:26-07

Humblik: I'll also include the Nimo codec pack. You'll need to run that first to be able to play the episode. btw if you have an ftp client (leechftp, cuteftp, or something that supports resume), it can make life a lot friendlier.

Bitscape: Who killed Kenny?
2002-01-24 04:40:34-07

Shadowkiller: Those bastards.
2002-01-24 08:37:20-07

Shadowkiller: I think that perhaps Jaeger killed Kenny.
2002-01-24 12:20:16-07

Jäger thinks that Kenny got run down while crossing College Avenue.
2002-01-24 17:42:43-07

Bitscape: Ah, that explains it.
2002-01-24 19:37:30-07

Humblik ponders.
2002-01-24 21:08:51-07

Humblik: hmm, just need to try this syntax--> asdf:asdf
2002-01-24 21:09:40-07

Humblik: ftp://asdf:asdf@0.0.0.0:1 024
2002-01-24 21:13:52-07

Humblik: Okay, I am currious now. Was my previous ftp link censored?
2002-01-24 21:14:40-07

Humblik: Drizzt, I think I;ve got your email. I'll send the site to you so you can download it.
2002-01-24 21:16:28-07

Jäger didn't censor anything...
2002-01-24 23:01:05-07

Jäger: but display processing on mine and bitscape's pages convert it into a link
2002-01-24 23:08:35-07

Humblik: k, that's strange. I was accessing it from Yanthor's house and it didn't show up in the chatterbox. I go home and it works fine. I'll attribute it to IE being it's normal self.
2002-01-24 23:43:51-07

Humblik: We watched the next episode tonight. Typical of Farscape's multiparters, it leaves you desperately wanting more. I can already feel the impatience and anticipation of season 4.
2002-01-24 23:46:21-07

Shadowkiller: fafafaFriday!
2002-01-25 12:56:16-07

Jäger has gotten himself addicted to Maelstrom
2002-01-25 16:21:26-07

Bitscape: It's Tuesday evening. Buffy fans unite on UPN!
2002-01-29 19:02:05-07

Shadowkiller: Demon meat... mmmm.... One thing I can't figure out: Was that episode sponsored by the fast food industry, the anti-fast food industry, or the national herbivores society?
2002-01-30 13:00:45-07

Jäger: For fun and excitement, telnet to rage. (port 23)
2002-01-30 16:00:41-07

Bitscape: Hehe. Argo won't even be that friendly with you. (i.e. I don't recommend trying it, unless you are prepared to face the consequences. :)
2002-01-30 17:25:26-07

Bitscape: Hey, wait a minute! ssh stopped working. Perhaps I spoke too soon.
2002-01-30 17:27:32-07

Bitscape: or maybe it's just gotten a LOT slower
2002-01-30 17:30:29-07

Yanthor: I suggest two things: 1. You vote in Slashdot's current pole. 2. You search the comments for a comment with a rating of 5 that is...well...the funniest thing on slashdot I've ever read. Hint: Princess Bride
2002-01-31 13:41:30-07

Nemo: That is great. A couple of the replies were good too.
2002-01-31 14:15:43-07

Shadowkiller: Time to say goodbye to Loki. They made lots of great games over the years, and will be missed. [www.linuxgames.com]
2002-01-31 15:18:52-07

Shadowkiller: BTW, if anyone wants to put any final orders in, this is the last chance. They say they'll still ship any order received before midnight tonight. [www.lokigames.com]

2002-01-31 16:42:13-07

Cartman: Loki is already closed. The sign said 12:00 P.M. DOH!
2002-01-31 17:04:00-07

Cartman: I guess it would be more in character for me to say, "weak"
2002-01-31 17:05:23-07

Cartman: And why might jaegerfesting not allow posts from IE6? Is IE6 broken in some odd way?
2002-01-31 17:06:29-07

Jäger: IE-what?
2002-01-31 23:08:56-07
