Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (*** 1/2)

Wednesday, February 27, 2002 23:23

The non-stop laugh-a-thon. The final film in the New Jersey Trilogy (or not?). A philosophical masterpiece of our time. (Though some might think otherwise. lol. If only all the replies were something other than 404s.)

A Beautiful Mind (****)

Sunday, February 24, 2002 19:45

This movie tells the story of John Nash (according to people who know his real biography, the movie mis-tells it in some spots), the Nobel Prize-winning mathematicion whose work and theories would influence the way international economic relations are conducted in the modern world. His brilliance would not be without a price, however. Along with these abilities -- perhaps inseparable from them -- came a debilitating mental condition known as schizophrenia which would severely hinder his ability to go about his life. Where does the line between genius and madness lie?

The unexamined life is not worth living

Thursday, February 21, 2002 23:53

Or, if I may pillage the quotes file for the addendum:

Gabrielle: "Some people say the unexamined life is not worth living."

Xena: "Those people haven't lived my life."

A response ambiguous enough in its potential for dual interpretation, that it could warrant an essay of its own. But I think that stone is better left unturned. (Insert clever pun about that not being the only aspact of the show which allows for "dual" interpretation. It's been done before.)

The Insider (****)

Thursday, February 21, 2002 00:38

This is the one the tobacco industry didn't want anybody to see. It is a great film , not merely because the story it tells is true (as it unfolded right on the national media), but because the way it is told is utterly fascinating. Or perhaps the fact that it is a great film is indirectly due to the veracity of the events.

Here I sit

Wednesday, February 20, 2002 21:18

Every content solution regular knows by now that something odd happened with Rage's apache last night. (I myself am still not totally clear on exactly what it was that happened, or why, but obviously, it did happen. I'm sure somebody somewhere knows.) Apparently, the idea of having an impaired ability get to my lack of content was distressing to some people. Therefore, even though everything appears to be working again, I have decided to post some more of this so-called "content".

Moulin Rouge! (****)

Saturday, February 16, 2002 23:31

A supurbly crafted, thoroughly entertaining film. Music that spans the century put together to tell a beautifully tragic love story. Boom, boom. Tragedy, comedy, tragedy, comedy. Yes, I watched the first commentary track earlier today too. Great stuff. Ya'll know it.

Twin Falls Idaho (****)

Friday, February 15, 2002 22:53

Note: I am breaking a long-standing movielog policy tradition typing up this entry. The viewing was not presented in the film's original aspect ratio. The sides were cropped off using a technique from hell commonly known as "pan-and-scan". Why do I break policy this now? Basically, I figure it would be pretty silly to type all this up in a rambling, when it really belongs in a movielog entry. Since the cinematography was butchered to the point that the mutilation of the shot composition was obnoxiously obvious in several sections, I'm scoring it appropriately on the viewing conditions rating. I also can't accurately rate the cinematography, although I suspect it was pretty darn good.

Friday, February 15, 2002 02:41

Last night (meaning Wednesday), I went to Best Buy. I decided it was way past time to acquire a new cell phone. (Attentive readers may remember that Bitscape's old cell phone has utterly sucky coverage in and around the Castle Lair. Since since the land line was cancelled due to excessive annoyance, this effectively elimiated direct voice communication from inside the Lair.)

Rant about nothing

Monday, February 11, 2002 23:22

Actually, I have no rant. The title just sounded good. Kind of like the "show about nothing" except it's a rant about nothing, and not really funny either. Does your life resemble a Seinfeld episode?

Coffeehouse departure postponed

Monday, February 11, 2002 01:04

Since he wasn't feeling very good this morning, bouncing decided to stick around another day to "tie up loose ends" (I could have almost guessed that by looking at the state of his apartment at the end of the day yesterday.) Looks like he might be coming down with some sort of sickness, possibly exacerbated by the fact that he stayed up all night on Friday.

The Silence of the Lambs (*** 1/2)

Monday, February 11, 2002 00:41

Classically grotesque psychological horror / suspense film. I'm sure everyone is familiar with Anthony Hopkins in the role of Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the serial killer who eats his victims. While imprisoned, he helps FBI Trainee Clarice (Jodie Foster is always great, of course) to hunt another similarly psychotic serial killer.

Superstar (* 1/2)

Monday, February 11, 2002 00:29

Since the Mary Katherine Gallagher character was funny on Saturday Night Live, one might think it would make a funny movie. Not so. There were less laughs in this 81 minute movie than in the 5 minute SNL scripts from which it was inspired. The few chuckles that it did have were lines lifted straight from the show. Somehow, even those didn't have the same energy they did when done before a live audience. And the rest was just... stupid. Not even funny. Just dumb.

Coffeehouse Apartment: The Final Saga

Saturday, February 9, 2002 22:38

Today, bouncing (mostly) vacated his Coffeehouse Apartment, having occupied it for only three and a half months. I helped him load his stuff into the moving truck. We were joined by Scott and his girlfriend, who helped move furniture. Scott's world famous antics were once again demonstrated when a chair was transported 3 stories down by dangling it from a coax cable off the porch. Professional moving help at its finest. Would you ever ask for anything less?

Great movie. Nosebleed seat position. The guy at the ticket counter warned me that there were only a few left, so I'd probably get a crappy seat, but I was going to be damned if I failed on a second attempt to see this film. Down in the absolute front row, where I could almost make out the individual pixels (metaphorically speaking). But hey, that's what I get for not being early.
