Code by day, code by night

Thursday, November 30, 2000 02:38

Uh huh, this is gonna be an even shorter one. Not even sure why I'm bothering to post it. Maybe to let the Ramblings-only vultures know that I'm still alive. (As if there are any visitors to this page who haven't already visited the collective by now anyway. Okay, maybe those who run screaming and hide in the corner whenever they hear the word "cookie" in the context of a web page. lol.)

Better not let traditional ramblings go into total neglect

Monday, November 27, 2000 00:35

I fear that throwing random thoughts into Content Collective, and tweaking its code has held a lot more appeal lately than the mundane ole ramblings. But I wouldn't want this area to turn into a total ghost town. Like, say, the movielog. hehe.

Introducing Content Collective

Sunday, November 26, 2000 00:18

Strange ideas for CGI-based web stuff tend to creep into the brain over Thanksgiving holidays. And so it is with this one. Content Collective is the product of... well, you can go in there and read about it.

Keeping emotional atrophy at bay

Tuesday, November 21, 2000 18:25

Yes, this could be one of my "darker" ones, so if that shit depresses you as much as it does me, this might not be the most uplifting thing. OTOH, I did say could for a reason. Maybe it'll be light and fun. With ramblings, you never know for certain.

DSL back up, Debian fixes downloaded, ramblings synced, the world is at peace

Friday, November 17, 2000 23:22

A brief outage indeed. And guess what! My gnucash even works again, so I can now input all my transactions for the week. (Something wierd was happening with the dependencies earlier, which kept it from installing, but tonight's update fixed it all.) Three cheers for the Debian developers! Hip hip hooray! Happy stomach, happy night

Happy nostrils now, too. Mmmmmm... an extra advantage of this candle obsession. I haven't lit a single candle since Sunday night, but even still, the instant I open my door and step into the room, there is this incredible rush of sweet, fragrant air. Most delicious. I don't consciously notice it after I've been in here for a while, but when I first walk in.... Mmmmmmm.... The best Jerry. The best!

No Disc

Wednesday, November 8, 2000 18:04

That's gotta rank up there on the random title index. From the prompt, I typed ramble, seached my head a bit in an attempt to think of something good to call this one, leaned back (I like my still-new chair very much, thank you), and the DVD player's LED display caught my eye. It was/is still on, after me rushing to take out the Woodstock disc this morning so I could get it back to the store on time. Hence, my title for tonight.

Downed connections, fossilized content, deadtrees to gorge on

Thursday, November 2, 2000 23:52

Rage's connection being down, one can only wonder when this rambling will see the light of day. (Times like this make the thought of getting Argo's apache and Loung scripts configured and acquiring a domain name all the more appealing.) Actually, according to unofficial unwritten schedule, it's nearly time for the Louisville Compound line to experience another outage. This weekend, perhaps. Of course, I would have no objection if US Pest were to break the trend, surprise everybody, and (gasp!) actually keep the lines working for more than one straight month.

Shadowkiller: Welcome to the month of November.
2000-11-01 10:57:14-07

Shadowkiller wonders if the readers of this webpage have grounds to charge its author with sexual harrassment for posting those pictures, which in my view have contributed to a hostile surfing environment.

scott: anybody want to help pay for rage?

scott: you've got a job, do you expect for me to pay for your frre hosting forever?
2000-11-03 13:48:56-07

bouncing: Zope's pretty nice. It has its quirks though. ie; if you have several check boxes each with the same name, if the user checks only one, it comes back as a string. If the user checks two or more, it comes back as a list. You can type cast it, though. The other goofieness comes from its naming scheme and scoping system. Finally, its security-minded restricted execution can be annoying if you're used to system services.
2000-11-03 15:50:44-07

bouncing: et's see. I could (a) host on rage, where the people are fun, and the server is down, and Scott thinks we should pay him, or (b) host on tridog1, where backups on any given file will be recorded in about 10 minutes, the security is great, and Mike actually pays me.. hrm... why am I on rage? oh yeah, the 'community'

2000-11-06 18:44:49-07

Jäger: Those master's students? they're all off doing something *useful*, instead of hanging around this lack of content. But if I happen to run into any (as if), i'll point them over here.

2000-11-08 10:57:08-07

2000-11-08 11:06:57-07

bouncing: bse: How does that work in UK? Do you elect representatives who elect the Prime Minister?
2000-11-08 11:07:31-07

Shadowkiller: There have also been allegations of messed up ballot cards in certain Florida precincts.
2000-11-08 11:18:32-07

bouncing: I heard about that too. It's wild stuff. Is this stuff only investigated when it's a close race? Has this kind of thing always been happenning? If it goes on all the time, and they just say "It doesn't effect who wins" and ignore it, that means that third parties aren't getting a fair shake.
2000-11-08 11:24:34-07

Shadowkiller: Well in this case, the messup supposably confused people who wanted to vote for Gore into checking Pat Buchanan. So this one could arguably have HELPED a third party (and hurt a democrat). As for WHICH third party it managed to help.... yuck.

bouncing has a theory behind Nader support: no one knows what he stands for. An admin down the hall from NeTrack is a Nader support -- T-shirt, bumper sticks, all that. I asked him a number of questions: whether Nader wanted to raise/lower taxes, what to tax, how big the military should be, whether he supports school voutures, etc. Every single one, the answer was: "I don't know" -- he's hip because he's got no opinions for anyone to dislike. If you go to his web page, he's certainly a socialist.
2000-11-08 22:37:36-07

bouncing political theory: In the US anyway, the least effective, most wasteful, worst managed institution of any size is... the federal government. Take a problem, any problem, and the government will do the least effective job with the most money solving it. Therefor, find the tasks that ONLY the Federal government can do, have it do them, and accept it in its limited scope of bloatedness.

Bitscape: One complain I have with Mozilla (which also occurred in previous Netscapes): It silently decompresses gzipped files without asking or telling you what it's doing during download.
2000-11-10 23:27:21-07

Jäger checks in; might sleep sometime soon
2000-11-11 01:09:28-07

bse: current mozilla nightlies down gunzip ;)
2000-11-11 08:48:47-07

bse: down? er.. don't even =D
2000-11-11 08:49:24-07

Jäger heads off to COMDEX
2000-11-11 16:53:14-07

theq.net: Whahuh?
2000-11-11 22:05:21-07

bse: theq, eh? how intruieging... comdex.. woo.. i always thought that was a M$ tradeshow, but that was years ago.. mmaybe it still is. i have no idea. moo.
2000-11-11 22:20:17-07

Bitscape: Oh what a mess I have. Oh what a mess!
2000-11-11 23:58:44-07

Bitscape: Aren't site redesigns a fun thing? :)
2000-11-12 08:10:32-07

bse: indeed =D
2000-11-12 09:37:10-07

Bitscape: Jaeger reports from Comdex.
2000-11-12 21:49:36-07

Bitscape: Jaeger says 'billg gave a keynote.'
2000-11-12 21:50:29-07

Shadowkiller: Monday mornings make me sleepy.
2000-11-13 08:46:31-07

bouncing just learned that his company is loosing a really great coworker and friend. :/
2000-11-13 14:34:43-07

Jäger reports live from Comdex. I shook Linus' hand!
2000-11-13 16:16:31-07

bse falls over. oh my.
2000-11-13 16:21:30-07

Gem: Hi.
2000-11-13 16:22:41-07

bouncing: that'a boy, ted!
2000-11-13 16:36:45-07

Shadowkiller: YOU.. shook the hand... of... Linus?!? THE Linus?!?!?! Ooooo. I think the Great Penguin from the sky has come to enrapture us all.
2000-11-13 16:43:01-07

Shadowkiller: bouncing, who is this "ted" character you speak of? ;)
2000-11-13 16:43:42-07

Shadowkiller: Should we be scared that the name of a person frequently mentioned in Jaeger's journals is now appearing on Content Solutions?
2000-11-13 16:53:00-07

bouncing learns that scottgalvin.com is not a CS provider.
2000-11-13 17:02:39-07

bouncing: urgh.. /s/not/now/g
2000-11-13 17:02:54-07

Jäger checks in again, this time with Dvorak!
2000-11-14 15:28:14-07

Bitscape: Ya mean that last changelog entry was done in QWERTY?!? Ewww. No wonder it was short.
2000-11-14 17:37:26-07

Spaz: Content. ContentContentCONTENT! Soluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu uuuutions! *ahem*
2000-11-14 22:14:27-07

Spaz: HTML is cool. I can alter the with of this column with the press of a single keyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! I have THE POWER! *snicker*
2000-11-14 22:17:43-07

bouncing thinks CS will be needing moderation before long.
2000-11-14 22:19:09-07

bouncing: Especially if a given post is "off topic"
2000-11-14 22:19:24-07

Spaz: Now somone will have to post something to make it go away! *evil cackle*
2000-11-14 22:19:40-07

bouncing watches the recount news on TV. Gore reminds me of a 4-year old demanding a "do-over" in a game of dodge ball, yelling "no fair!!"...
2000-11-14 22:46:56-07

ashley: i love you alex!
2000-11-15 01:49:10-07

Bitscape: Gurg. Let there be content.
2000-11-15 06:56:42-07

Shadowkiller: Spaz = troll.
2000-11-15 08:21:17-07

Shadowkiller heard a funny joke on the radio today. When the spoiled baby candidates were talking about how "bad" Hollywood content is, Bush complained that there was too much violence and killing, while Gore thought there was too much sex and frontal nudity.
2000-11-15 08:23:20-07

Shadowkiller: In other words, Bush thought that there was to much gore, and Gore thought that there was too much... well... bush.
2000-11-15 08:24:26-07

bouncing: I think you got that the other way around. Bush would think there was too much sex (Monica joke), Gore thinks there's too much killing (Texas crime/punishment laws)
2000-11-15 12:00:54-07

bouncing thinks his company needs a more realistic test environment.
2000-11-15 12:01:28-07

Shadowkiller: I smell a rat. Netscape 6 actually appears to have REMOVED the feature from Mozilla in which you could right click on an image, and block all future images from the given server. (Translation: VERY easy banner ad filtering.)
2000-11-15 14:24:00-07

Shadowkiller: Perhaps certain ad companies have been lining the pockets of AOL? Original Mozilla = awesome browser. Netscape 6 = still not bad, but lots of bloated mess on top.
2000-11-15 14:32:16-07

bouncing: When will Mozilla stablize?
2000-11-15 17:14:02-07

bouncing works on kenkinder.com
2000-11-15 17:21:49-07

bouncing: Hrm. Yes. I will go live soon. Indeeeed.
2000-11-15 17:23:05-07

Bitscape: Depends on what you define as "stable". Right now, I would say M18 is as stable as Netscape 4.7. According to the Mozilla Roadmap, the version they will call "Mozilla 1.0" will be around Spring 2001.
2000-11-15 17:41:02-07

Bitscape: Of course, if you want what AOL has termed as a release, Netscape 6.0 is available for download right now. (Basicly M18, along with handy SSL+Java support, plus lots of worthless crap, and minus some useful features and bugfixes.) To each their own.
2000-11-15 17:45:09-07

scott: netscape 6 seems more stable than pr3, and it's faster (at loading pages, not starting up) than IE. where the hell am i posting from? biology 101 drop out central? ;)
2000-11-15 18:10:16-07

scott: jaeger called me today from comdex, he reports that he'd doing fine.
2000-11-15 18:40:11-07

bse: im sticking with mozilla nightlies. why should i bother with an older and more crippled version? heeh =D
2000-11-15 20:32:44-07

Bitscape runs the milestone releases. Heehee. :)
2000-11-15 20:57:48-07

Bitscape: Doctor Seven to the rescue! Hip hip hooray!
2000-11-15 20:58:17-07

Bitscape is not offended by Nemo's quote. :)
2000-11-15 22:36:51-07

bse: hmm.. in the mozilla debug menu there's an "install psm" item. that might help you with SSL bitscape.. if its in M18 that is, i cant remmember.
2000-11-16 06:55:08-07

Shadowkiller tries out Netscape 6. Seems a notch slower than M18 on the same machine. Not bad though.
2000-11-16 08:26:37-07

Jäger: Alright, confess: how many of you spent two hours reading my changelogs when they showed up?
2000-11-16 15:09:35-07

Shadowkiller: Not two hours, but I must admit I did read them. :)
2000-11-16 15:47:15-07

bouncing got in a car accident.
2000-11-16 16:45:37-07

Jäger: do'h!
2000-11-16 17:46:30-07

bouncing is fine though. It's in the shop and I have my little rental.
2000-11-16 19:52:10-07

Bitscape: Youch.
2000-11-16 20:14:33-07

Jäger: what happened?
2000-11-16 20:20:33-07

bouncing: I was going West on S. Boulder and at the 76th St. intercection, a car decided to wait in to turn until I was there. I (successfully) swirved to miss them, but adjusting for the swirve, my car turned 180 degrees, went over the medium, and landed in the ditch on the other side.
2000-11-16 20:27:49-07

bouncing: The other driver actually immidiatly drove away, but a witness chased after them and got his license and the address of the house he stopped at. So the police are going to give him a hit and run ticket.
2000-11-16 20:28:39-07

bouncing: The witnesses also confirmed the events, so it looks like the police report will be in my favor. The car was towed. The rear axil is at an angle and the rear wheels are sort of digging into the side of the car, but other than that and the front tires being busted, there's pretty minimal body damage. State Farm (my ins.) is sueing the other guy for my everything, so it looks like I won't have any expense.
2000-11-16 20:30:27-07

Bitscape: Damn!
2000-11-16 20:35:44-07

Bitscape: Talk about a glowing review! But I must concur. It was Quality Television Programming.
2000-11-16 21:01:43-07

scott: hola!
2000-11-16 22:23:46-07

bouncing: Yeah. I don't really watch Voyager.
2000-11-16 22:25:04-07

Matt-roomate of Jaeger: On this auspicious occasion, 11/16/2000, I successfully completed Engineering Economy homework prior to Jaeger's completing it.
2000-11-16 22:29:30-07

Matt-roomate of Jaeger: On this auspicious occasion, 11/16/2000, I successfully completed Engineering Economy homework prior to Jaeger's completing it.
2000-11-16 22:30:31-07

Jäger: The sole reason, of course, being that I spent the afternoon banging away on my week of back ordinary differential equations homework instead of engineering economy
2000-11-16 22:35:55-07

Bitscape: Ugggggh. Debain packages breaking all over the place. This certainly makes the argument for using Slackware more compelling.
2000-11-16 23:01:00-07

Bitscape: Now I can't submit my latest rambling until I sort out this mess of broken perl modules.
2000-11-16 23:01:40-07

Bitscape: What a sad state of affairs. If you're using woody, beware. The Perl DBI stuff is a non-working mess. I give up (for now).
2000-11-16 23:29:56-07

bse: hmm.. i use woody, but not perl dbi ;) my X is kidna borked though.. cant get british keymap, silly american default.. almost as bad as a turk keyboard. heh. =D
2000-11-17 07:12:07-07

bse: speaking of which.. uh oh....
2000-11-17 07:18:19-07

bouncing: Smashing Punpkins is breaking up. My question: How does a one-man band break up?
2000-11-17 13:13:08-07

Shadowkiller: Today is the greatest day i've ever known. Can't wait for tomorrow. Tomorrow's not you own. I'll tear my heart out. Before I get out.
2000-11-17 13:21:34-07

bouncing runs nessus. It tells him about security holes. WOOHOO
2000-11-17 13:39:15-07

bse: mmm smashing pumpkins. their last uk concert was last week.. i never did buy tickets...
2000-11-17 14:41:53-07

Jäger: headlights pointing at the dawn
2000-11-17 14:47:08-07

bouncing: It's snowing.
2000-11-17 15:55:45-07

Shadowkiller: Snowing! It most certainly is. It most certainly is.
2000-11-17 16:40:22-07

Shadowkiller: Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Shall we have Content Solutions sing-a-long? ;)
2000-11-17 16:41:22-07

Bill: What up scott hope everything is good in the hood
2000-11-17 17:03:23-07

Jäger: Lucky you and your snow. Cold here in College Place, but no snow yet...
2000-11-17 17:19:37-07

bse: i heard it was snowing here in england this morning. of course, i didnt see any of it. of course.
2000-11-17 19:34:20-07

bouncing: Anyone who wants to make a screenshot of kenkinder.com:8080 on their browser and send it to me (ken@kenkinder.com) is appreciated. (Make sure you use port 8080, it's the "devel" version)
2000-11-17 23:52:30-07

Bitscape munches on a tasty hot burrito. Mmmmmmm.
2000-11-17 23:53:01-07

bouncing: Chipotle?
2000-11-17 23:55:22-07

Bitscape: Hmmm... The main kenkinder.com:8080 page looks nice, but clicking anywhere gets me Zope errors.
2000-11-17 23:55:41-07

bouncing: Yeah, I'm kind of working on the look right now.
2000-11-17 23:57:51-07

Bitscape: Here is what it looks like in my Mozilla.
2000-11-17 23:59:45-07

bouncing: Thanks... Hrm... it looks as though the links at the top kind of wrapped. Mind if I ask what font size/resolution that was at?
2000-11-18 00:01:34-07

bouncing: Maybe I should make the wrapping look okay. What color contrasts well with both the top blue and the middle white of the stripe across the top?
2000-11-18 00:03:18-07

Bitscape: Mostly default, I think. For even more fun, here is a shot of my font preferences dialog. :)
2000-11-18 00:04:33-07

Bitscape: Given the high contrast, of the image, that's kind of a toughie. Red maybe? (But that wouldn't go too well with the rest of the color scheme.)
2000-11-18 00:25:10-07

bouncing: Netscape 4 seems to have a bug: the bottom table cell background image over-rides the top table cell background color.
2000-11-18 00:43:55-07

bouncing: ARG! Netscape doesn't handle PNG transparencies right at all. What a peice of crap!
2000-11-18 01:07:28-07

Bitscape: You're just using the wrong version of Netscape/Mozilla. :)
2000-11-18 08:45:04-07

Jäger checks in from... a place of residence not his own
2000-11-18 10:37:07-07

bouncing: Jaeger: when you have readers other than yourself, you want your page to be displayable on their browsers.
2000-11-18 12:38:54-07

Jäger: That is a jpeg, yes?
2000-11-18 21:01:45-07

Bitscape makes no apologies for the pngs on his page. The standard has been out there for years, and browser makers have had PLENTY of time to implement it. It's more efficient, lossless, and free of nasty patents. People should use it.
2000-11-19 01:10:16-07

bse: i too was going to buy mr warner's new creation yesturday, but i slept till 4:30 and didn't have any transport. i also rose at 4:30 today, weekends, whatever. =D
2000-11-19 09:45:59-07

Bitscape: Well, I would say if ya liked Antichrist Svperstar and Mechanical Animals, you'd probably like Holywood too. It's got that rich, potent sound that just tastes so gooood in the ears. :)
2000-11-19 10:45:29-07

bouncing uses PNGs as well, but within the limitations of Netsc(r)ape's ability to display it.
2000-11-19 12:32:15-07

Bitscape: It just ain't the same without agent Mulder.
2000-11-19 20:59:27-07

bouncing: Can someone please explain why beer, cigarettes, and handguns are grouped in the same federal agency, ATF?? What's the connection?
2000-11-19 22:34:16-07

me: here
2000-11-20 00:55:12-07

me: HAIKU: There once was a man named Bill We all would like to Kill He thought he had it with DOS The only one who likes it is my gay boss Reboot reboot reboot reboot!
2000-11-20 00:59:46-07

Shadowkiller: Welcome to the world of disjointed discussion, version 1.1.
2000-11-20 08:57:53-07

bouncing: Clay and I have the same hardware at work. He runs Windows, I run Linux. My seti@home processing is about 40% faster. Hmm...
2000-11-20 12:21:31-07

Jäger checks in from Silicon Valley
2000-11-20 21:57:04-07

Bitscape: Jaeger, you crazy dude, you.
2000-11-20 23:35:39-07

by bouncing : Can someone please explain why beer, cigarettes, and handguns are grouped in the same federal agency, ATF?? What's the connection?
2000-11-21 07:30:16-07

Shadowkiller: Some things were never meant to make sense.
2000-11-21 08:50:14-07

Jäger: Oh, don't worry: my craziness gets a whole lot worse...
2000-11-21 11:27:24-07

bouncing: Silicon Valley... home of smog, Fry's, lots of tech company, and ... Jaeger???
2000-11-21 11:28:15-07

Jäger: Oh, don't worry: my craziness gets a whole lot worse...
2000-11-21 11:46:08-07

bse: beer makes you drunk, so then you go and shoot someone, and then have a comedown cigarette. =o
2000-11-21 11:49:05-07

Shadowkiller: "Press Release&quo; ... lol. I'm sure all the news outlets will be carrying this one.
2000-11-21 15:53:02-07

Shadowkiller: Eek. My quot entity didn't quite... oh well.
2000-11-21 15:53:33-07

Jäger: Content Solutions is all the news we need, right?
2000-11-21 17:32:23-07

Bitscape: The only news that matters, right here. Heehee. If Slashdot and ign were on content solutions, I'd wholeheartedly agree.
2000-11-21 17:38:48-07

bouncing: Scottgalvin.com a whore?
2000-11-21 20:24:40-07

bse the insomniac: guess what.
2000-11-21 20:36:51-07

tangoman: ViaVoice is Cool for text input. Takes a while to train.
2000-11-21 21:21:19-07

Bitscape arrives back at the Lair.
2000-11-22 02:52:15-07

bouncing: No. It's not.
2000-11-22 02:53:02-07

bse: i feel odd talking to my computer for a good reason; most of the time its to tell it how crap it is. morning.
2000-11-22 05:59:15-07

Shadowkiller: Bitscape, you evil, evil person! HATE that night guy. Uggggggh.
2000-11-22 08:07:33-07

Shadowkiller: Bitscape, I think you ate too much pizza last night. And at too late an hour. Bad Bitscape. Bad.
2000-11-22 09:26:46-07

Bitscape: I think I speak on behalf of Seinfeldian night guys everywhere when I proudly proclaim the following. Neener Neener neener!
2000-11-22 15:11:50-07

bouncing is lucid today. He didn't get up until 9. :)
2000-11-22 15:42:42-07

bse: did i go through the wrong door?
2000-11-22 18:46:32-07

Bitscape: Which door did you go through? Door number 1, door number 2, or door number 3?
2000-11-22 20:37:40-07

Spaz: It's a CRIME! A CRIME I say! It's the f'ing day BEFORE XGiving, and f'ing SANTA CLAUSE is at the f'ing mall. And the f'ing Xmas lights are up in trees along the center divides. I'm gonna go postal! Them Canadians have the right idea....
2000-11-22 22:13:29-07

bouncing is looking into php
2000-11-22 23:16:42-07

bouncing: bse: What's the deal with database connections in php? It seems like they create and destroy them on demand. Is there pooling?
2000-11-22 23:17:14-07

Bitscape: I can see it already. Christmas terrorist cells forming in every city across the land. Their mission: Sabotage all premature Christmas decorations at commercial outlets. HaHaHaHa!
2000-11-22 23:34:47-07

bse: bouncing, i dont think there's any kind of pooling; there's some vague persistant connection stuff though.. but then again, have you seen the differences between using a mysql db and a pgsql db? heh.. really fscked up, i thought it would all be unified in php4 - or so i read. i've left php for zope now, it's so much nicer, and tidier code.. inline php can get really messy. just have to figure out this zope-on-apache stuff.. =)
2000-11-23 07:02:57-07

bouncing: Zope on Apache is kind of tricky. If you're using Debian or Red Hat, it's packaged pretty well to do it though. Otherwise, I suggest using Zope's own webserver until you've got it figured out.
2000-11-23 12:57:43-07

bouncing: The only thing with Zope that I'm kind of annoyed with is the way it thinks about the world. It seems like relational databases are an after thought and it really wants you to store your documents in its object database, which would be good, but what I really want is a totally relational db-driven website.
2000-11-23 12:59:06-07

bouncing: Zope's docs on how to write Zope Products is also poor. If I really knew Zope products well, I could probably get what I want.
2000-11-23 13:02:53-07

bouncing: One thing that does help with that though, is mkproduct: [www.zope.de]
2000-11-23 13:06:52-07

Bitscape: <troll>Perl forever!</troll>
2000-11-23 13:41:26-07

bse: well ive got zope+zserver running on my computer fine.. the cobalt raq on the other hand, needs zope for about 3 different sites, i havent yet attempted to try installing it yet. =o
2000-11-23 15:23:14-07

bse: there's perl extensions to zope in the works. ;)
2000-11-23 15:48:46-07

bouncing: You can do it with one Zope instance, but I suggest giving each domain its own instance of Zope. It's better that way. I remember installing Zope on RAGE without messing up any of the other domains -- it was actually pretty easy with the right docs.
2000-11-23 17:52:36-07

bouncing: What I want is something kind of like AOLServer/Tcl/Oracle setup that uses Apache/Python/PostgreSQL -- Zope does pretty well, except for its compulsion to use OO data storage. And well... Perl's the duct tape of the Internet.
2000-11-23 17:54:35-07

scott: we should get AOLserver running on a test box. does it support linux or just unix
2000-11-23 17:58:07-07

bouncing: Scott: It's opensource (you can compile it on anything that's POSIX). I beleive it's actually packaged for Red Hat and Debian. There are issues with AOLServer too though. In particular for Ted, there's no Perl support, module or otherwise. There is, of course, Python support.
2000-11-23 18:08:36-07

bouncing: Oh wait, there's a CGI module, if you dig that kind of non-speed. Although hec -- x13.com runs straight CGI right now anyway -- where's the loss??
2000-11-23 18:09:41-07

bouncing: Seriously, if I were wanting a Perl application framework, I'd go with Mason.
2000-11-23 18:10:21-07

bse: hmm.. not sure if i can do that.. without resorting to giving up on cobalt's web admin interface and doing a homebrew multiple domain setup, as it were. what kind of setup is rage?
2000-11-23 18:11:26-07

bouncing: As long as you've got access to apache.conf and mod_rewrite, you're set! What I have is one Zope instance (for kenkinder.com) and a mod_rewrite directive in httpd.conf that redirects hits to my domain to the persistant cgi file.
2000-11-23 18:13:52-07

bouncing: mod_rewrite is required over a simple Alias because it sends the full URL stub to Zope.cgi and lets Zope make htaccess requests.
2000-11-23 18:14:41-07

bse: hmm, cool, thanks. i'll take a look at that.
2000-11-23 18:25:42-07

bouncing: Yeah, I think it's in the Zope docs if you get lost. The main thing I really like about Zope that PHP/CGI/whatever can't produce is the URL structure. Zope URL's don't look weird. I like the way in Zope you can have a database-driven site that has the URLs of a static site. That's really slick. It also apropriatly has search engines index it.
2000-11-23 18:28:56-07

bse: apache does have the MultiViews option.. so you can do domain/phpscript/option1/ option2/option3 type idea, ala freshmeat. not that search engines can index that, but it does look nicer to the end user.
2000-11-23 18:34:22-07

bse: hmm, looks like the raq already uses mod_rewrite.. nifty.
2000-11-23 18:36:33-07

bse: oh gee, im a dumbass. i just realised how to do it. bah! =)
2000-11-23 18:41:30-07

bouncing: MultiViews. Interesting. I might look into multiviews + mod_python action. I really don't think leaving Python for PHP is worth it.
2000-11-23 19:17:37-07

bouncing looks for a URL talking about MultiViews
2000-11-23 19:27:23-07

bse: it doesnt have to be a php script, i should ahve left out php from my example. ;) you just need to be able decode the uri and extract the options.
2000-11-23 19:31:14-07

bouncing: How do you extract the URL? Is it in the CGI arguments?
2000-11-23 19:43:02-07

Bitscape wakes up with a stomach still superfull. Damn, you guys have been busy in this discussion!
2000-11-23 22:05:56-07

bouncing: bitscape, you missed a long dialog about php, zope, and apache! ... Anyway, I think I'll be doing some holiday festing!!
2000-11-23 22:11:28-07

Bitscape: That's why it's called festing.org. Heeheeehee. :)
2000-11-23 22:54:57-07

bse: heheehh. um, not sure how you do it in cgi but in PHP theres a variable called $PATH_INFO that contains the path after the domain name, i just explode that into an array, using /'s as a deliminator.
2000-11-24 06:19:51-07

bse: you would probably have to do some funky regex with perl, im not hot on CGI..
2000-11-24 06:20:43-07

bouncing ;) thinks the proper (ie; Python) way to do it would be: list = path_info.split('/')

Bitscape: Ladies and gentlemen, the Content Collective is now online.
2000-11-25 23:44:34-07

2000-11-26 12:38:14-07

bouncing: Okay, we're upgraded
2000-11-26 14:36:35-07

Bitscape: Note to Content Collective users: If you were one of the people who tried out one of the early cookie-ized versions, CLEAR YOUR bitscape.festing.org COOKIES! To put it simply, the early cookie scripts had some problems, which should now be corrected.
2000-11-27 01:44:30-07

Bitscape: But if you have old cookies, you might find yourself stuck. Clear 'em out, and it should work.
2000-11-27 01:45:15-07

Bitscape: Special thanks go to bouncing for helping to debug the cookie engine.
2000-11-27 01:59:34-07

Spaz: ...and if we don't accept your farking cookies?
2000-11-27 02:16:12-07

Bitscape: *sigh* Well, I was hoping nobody would have a problem with cookies, but given the rampant privacy paranoia on the net these days, maybe that's unrealistic.
2000-11-27 02:23:52-07

Spaz: What kind o anti-establishment-fark-D a-Man programmer is ya anyway? I no take-a da cookies I no read-a da Content? Farkin' A man! An I be on vacation for DIS lack-o-content? Oy, I mightas well log off and go on down to da beach to watch d'sun rise now!
2000-11-27 02:29:32-07

Bitscape: As it's currently coded, navigation simply will not work without cookies. Less than optimal for the non-cookie-friendly folk.
2000-11-27 02:33:10-07

Spaz: Ja mon! Navigation redirects me to /cgi-bin/ which gives an error, mon. No farkin' content! Time for the farkin' sunrise for me! Surf ya later.
2000-11-27 02:36:39-07

Spaz: P.S. Me be thinkin' you becomin a corportate playah using dose dam cookies to spy on you Content Readers. Ya can't catch us mon! We be knowing how to turn off that cookie shit!
2000-11-27 02:39:19-07

Bitscape: A corporate "playah"? Me?!?! Never. But since some people are paranoid, and I don't like the thought of having my site inaccessible to some poor conspiracy theorist's browser, a tweak has been made. The Content Collective again works with no cookies.
2000-11-27 02:48:26-07

Bitscape: For those who have cookies enabled, the location will continue to be stored in a cookie, but the cgi args for movement are back.
2000-11-27 02:50:09-07

Bitscape: And just for the record, it has nothing to do with one-click spying. Some people actually LIKE to open their browser and have it come back to the same place they left off.
2000-11-27 02:51:49-07

scott: [gore is a whore] how often is this database purged?
2000-11-27 06:58:30-07

bouncing: The database is only purged when it needs to be recreated -- usually an upgrade. Now... it's vacuumed when our web pages start slowing down and Ted or me gives the command. It should really be done on a cron.
2000-11-27 08:02:09-07

bouncing: bitscape: have you seen my one-click link patent? You can follow a link in just one click!!

bouncing: Zander is full of crap. "Java will go down, 10 to 20 years from now, as the most open, standard language and software environment that has hit our industry as long as I've been around."... Let's make a list of common languages: C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, Scheme, Lisp, Pike... Every single one except Java is non-proprietary. Java and MS C# stand alone as being the most proprietary languages used.
2000-11-27 15:35:54-07
