A week goes by

Sunday, March 30, 2003 02:32

I find myself relatively uninspired to write lately, but I don't want to let this page go too long without something. So, a brief summary of the past week.

Back to work again

Tuesday, March 25, 2003 01:55

Today was nutty. Last night, I went to bed at about 23:00, and slept until after 13:00 on Monday, waking up for a few minutes a couple times in between. It was 14 hours of sleep. I needed it after the gathering. But now, after a day at work, I'm tired again. Will sleep again soon.

A Festive Gathering: Second Half

Sunday, March 23, 2003 20:44

The past past 72 hours have gone by in a flash. Since Humblik and Yanthor left the Boulder Compound a little while ago. (Over 3 hours after they originally planned. Late, but not as late an hour as Jaeger and I left a similar gathering in Lincoln a couple years ago.)

A Festive Gathering: The First Half

Saturday, March 22, 2003 02:27

When I arrived at the Boulder Compound on Thursday evening, Jaeger, Yanthor, Humblik, Kiesa, and Captain Logan were in the living room with their computers assembled around 2 tables.

Preparing for the gathering

Thursday, March 20, 2003 19:58

Last I heard, the epic gathering recently began in the Boulder Compound. At this moment, I am still in the Laser Fortress, impatiently waiting for Dagobah to compile a kernel.

Like a spastic jellyfish with wings

Thursday, March 20, 2003 05:22

Yesterday. Tuesday. For once the weather people got it right, and more. According to media sources, we can conclusively say: It was the Biggest Snowstorm Ever. (Fine print: Within the state of Colorado, since the birth of Bitscape and the birth of both his parents. In other words: Since 1913.)

NBS Nightly Bitching Session

Tuesday, March 11, 2003 03:45

Is that what my web page has turned into? A nightly bitching session where I rant and moan about any and every aspect of my life's descention into suckville. Things will get better soon. Things have to get better, don't they? Maybe it's not all that bad, overall. Maybe I'm in a lousy mood right now. Maybe I'll wake up in a better frame of mind tomorrow.

One thing I do know with a high degree of certainty: I hate my job.

Cell phone gremlins

Tuesday, March 4, 2003 01:29

Yesterday, to my great dismay, my cell phone died before I left for work. It had mysteriously powered off. It didn't even beep the way it usually does when the battery is low. When I plugged it into the charger, the charge light wouldn't come on. Doh!

Shoutouts

Linknoid: It came with Enterprise, which was yours, remember?
2003-03-01 11:14:32

Jäger: Ah yes, the mighty Enterprise. Fun for the *whole* family. :)
2003-03-01 20:29:33

Linknoid: Hey Jaeger, you need comments on jaegerfesting. But since Bitscape was part of the last production, I might as well comment here
2003-03-01 21:57:44

Linknoid: When oil is extracted from olives, it actually is done in various stages
2003-03-01 21:58:24

Linknoid: At each stage, it becomes more and more difficult to extract the oil. When they get to a certain point, they have to start using chemicals to get any more oil out
2003-03-01 21:59:11

Linknoid: At this point, the olive oil is no longer considered virgin
2003-03-01 21:59:38

Linknoid: Extra virgin means it came from the very first extraction, and has not been exposed to any chemicals used in the later processing
2003-03-01 22:00:28

Linknoid: I know too much useless stuff. I think I should go on Jeopardy.

2003-03-03 15:24:08

Linknoid: Flash? Sorry, no can do. What's the site about?
2003-03-03 22:58:57

Bitscape: How do you know when you have an obscure web page? When most of the polls have more options than there are readers who vote.
2003-03-04 01:55:09

drizzt: i just got back from mardi gras. crazy. unfortunatel i will not be able to make it to the gathering. taxes.......nasty business.
2003-03-04 09:20:13

Yanthor: We are celebrating Mardi Gras at work today through lots of "bad for you" eats and decking everyone in beads (since nobody came in full outfit)
2003-03-04 09:34:29

bse: I hear you on the cellphone thing. Due to circumstances out of my control, I believe my cell has been permanently disconnected =( looks like i'll be getting AT&T Wireless soon enough.
2003-03-04 12:19:30

Bitscape: I like ATT wireless well enough. Good service, not too expensive. Although I don't get free long distance like some other people I know. (Which doesn't bother me because I seldom call long distance.) Maybe it's available under a different plan though.

Jäger tweaks his mozilla fonts... which managed to break themselves not to long ago

bouncing ponders whether he posts more content than jeag these days?
2003-03-08 00:16:00

Linknoid: Jaeger's content production sharply dropped when he got married
2003-03-08 20:15:01

Jäger: Perhaps, but that's when my web videos got started. :)

drizzt: is becoming actively involved in the save Farscape campaign. don't let reality drivel rule our televisions. [www.ipetitions.com] i'll keep you posted. i plan on getting my hands on this project through www.watchfarscape.com
2003-03-14 08:14:08

drizzt: please sign the petition. this is just one tool to use and actually carries some weight.
2003-03-14 08:15:22

drizzt: i'v started correspondance with the save farscape team and i believe i can bring some fresh ideas to the table as well as get a spark ignited. wish us luck people.
2003-03-14 08:16:11

Yanthor: Drizzt, that's awesome! Good luck. I visit their website regularly and printed off their posters to hang around my cube. They sparked several questions and I got to "witness" to three people!
2003-03-14 14:08:36

drizzt: lol, wow. that's great. i'm brewing some ideas for a fundraiser/awarness event here in nashville. we'll see what happens. however, i'm really trying to get them to start considering business approaches to saving the show.
2003-03-14 14:23:04

Linknoid: Bitscape, your HTML needs help, you for the "a" part of the anchor tag on your last link in this rambling.
2003-03-15 09:01:20

Linknoid: And it seems I forgot the "got" part of forgot in my last comment
2003-03-15 10:04:09

Linknoid: It is obvious from Jaeger's latest video that this fest occured before August 1998, since Bitscape is clearly seen to be deleting lines of code with his left middle finger instead of his right index finger.
2003-03-15 16:32:48

Linknoid: And that music was truly moving, it made me feel sad that the fest was ending.
2003-03-15 16:33:44

Bitscape: Oops. Thanks for catching that.
2003-03-15 23:57:38

Jäger: That is quite a disturbing screenshot, Bitscape.
2003-03-17 09:06:44

Jäger points out that Ziyal currently lacks an external IP, so its hostname doesn't resolve.
2003-03-17 09:09:22

Yanthor: One thing to remember is that America is not beyond expansionism. Remember the whole belief we learned about in our history books called: "Manifest Destiny"?
2003-03-18 10:13:50

scott: [us.imdb.com] funny.
2003-03-18 22:24:35

renee: hi all, renee here- who is yanthor? and on the subject of the impending "conflict" (which I am very very saddened by the thought of this), my question for Yanthor whilst they/you are reading about the Nazi's- does it mention all the people that kept saying that we (the US) should not get involved, and that what Germany did was her own business- and that going to war was just a way to up the popular vote for the then president? and does it talk about how so many Americans were so against getting into it? and the reports that were actually getting thru about Hitler's atrocities were all fabrications and lies? Does it talk about this in your book?? I am personally offended that you would even come CLOSE to comparing Hitler and his evil, yes EVIL to Bush and what is going on now. I do not agree that we should just go and kill a bunch of people. I do think this may have something to do with the oil. BUT, at the same time, I am an American, and I drive and I voted this President into office. I am personally sick and tired of hearing people talk about what we should and should not do as a nation. If you do not agree with what is going on, then DO SOMETHING about it. Do you drive a car?? When you sell that car and decide to only travel by public transport, and your own bodily power, THEN I may pay more attention to what you are going on about. Look at Ken- he bitches all the time about stuff- but HE IS DOING SOMETHING about it. Anyhow, just surfing on a snowy night, and thinking that I should put in my two cents. In a totally non-threatening, "share your opinion here" kinda way. thanks for providing this venue Ben. If nothing else, say some prayers for those that are so much less fortunate to have been born somewhere else than the good ole U S of A.
2003-03-18 23:31:15

drizzt: the more i learn about the situation the more i think this is actually less about oil. hussein is a pretty evil man. if half of what we hear about him is true. he's a human demon to put it bluntly.
2003-03-19 07:44:30

drizzt: i lean more towards non-war, however i don't rule it out. the biggest problem is how this situation has divided the world.
2003-03-19 07:47:29

drizzt: if you tie the type of ruler hussein is with the probability that Iraq was in some way tied to 9/11 then there is a legitimate motivation for war. Does it have to be right now before the inspectors finish their jobs? i don't think so. But I also think that if that scenario were to play out then nothing would ever get accomplished. Husseins people would still be tormented and the US would still be at the same level of risk. Of course the war could actually solidify that more. I suppose those of us who believe a certain way, this is all just another step towards fulfilling prophecy and we should just shut up, go about our lives and watch the story unfold.
2003-03-19 07:55:51

drizzt: i definitely do not compare what is happening now to what happened with the Nazi's. its pretty different. similar yes, but conceptually different. of course i could be very wrong, and getting that sick fuck out of Iraq could be a ploy for the US to secure a nice hold on valuable resources. who knows. however, do some research on Hussein and see if Iraq wouldn't be abetter place without him. Unless its total propaganda, his own people cry out for release from his rule. i've heard some very disturbing things about him and his family.
2003-03-19 08:02:38

drizzt: ok, enough for now, i'm not educated enough with the facts to go on. thanks for listening.
2003-03-19 08:03:07

Yanthor: I do not believe Bitscape was making a complete comparison between Nazi Germany and the current U.S. He simply suggested a comparison in certain foreign relations maneuvers. I think that is a good comparison.
2003-03-19 15:22:43

Zan Lynx: I have something to show y'all about snow. You can see it at [www.zlynx.org]
2003-03-19 17:42:47

Bitscape returns to Argo's console after many harrowing adventures due to the snowstorm. (Details to follow in a rambling shortly.)
2003-03-19 19:06:44

Bitscape: Renee! Thanks for stopping by to comment. First time you've posted here, I believe.
2003-03-19 19:09:54

bouncing: I'm with Yanthor. Comparing Bush's tactics to Hitler's tactics is nothing more than an accurate comparison. Bush is a warmonger. Hitler (and Hussein) are cruel fascists.
2003-03-19 19:12:07

Bitscape: Let's see... This whole debate is huge, and quite a number of points have been raised. (I suspect renee set a record for longest content solutions comment ever. :)
2003-03-19 19:12:08

Bitscape: First, it was me, not Yanthor, who made an explicit comparison to Nazi Germany. (I would've linked to Yanthor's own war opinion post on his website, [yanthor.net] but it requires a login to read, so I don't bother.)
2003-03-19 19:14:17

bouncing: Renee, I think this Salon article articulates what the American Left is going through: [salon.com] -- but really, who is the greater risk to peace and security ten years from now: George W. or Saddam? I have to say George W, but because he's "worse" but hecause he's powerful, and worse yet, he might actually think he's doing the "right thing." (THAT scares the shit out of me!)
2003-03-19 19:14:59

bouncing: but because=not because
2003-03-19 19:15:25

bouncing: Two cultures pointing at each other yelling "evil!" only diminishes our ability to see each other as humans, and therefor begets more bloodshed.
2003-03-19 19:16:41

Bitscape: My comparison to Nazi Germany and the current U.S./Iraq situation was about how both leaderships pressed for immediate military action, refusing to wait even a few days or weeks while diplomats scrambled for a peaceful solution. What I DON'T know for certain are Bush's real motivations or intentions. It Hitler's case, it was later discovered that he wanted nothing but war all along. Could the same be true here? Hopefully not. But if not, why not let the U.N. inspectors finish their work first?
2003-03-19 19:31:36

Bitscape: Anyway, that's my mouthful.
2003-03-19 19:32:01

Bitscape: Thankfully, many other aspects of Nazi Germany are NOT upon us. So Yanthor is right in that I'm not saying the situation is the same. Just one (or maybe two) aspects that look eerily similar.
2003-03-19 19:35:12

Bitscape: I agree with drizzt in that Saddam is a nasty, awful man. (Who doesn't?) I simply don't approve of the slaughter of many civilians as a means to get rid of him.
2003-03-19 19:36:44

bouncing: Although the comparison of war reparations forced on Germany and sanctions on Iraq are worthy of comparison. Both seem to promote fascism, not deter it.
2003-03-19 19:47:05

Bitscape: Which country has more in common with Nazi Germany: U.S. or Iraq? (I've heard many comparisons of both, as well as make one myself.)
2003-03-19 19:52:12

Bitscape: btw bouncing, excellent article. I'm reading it now.
2003-03-19 19:52:31

Bitscape: I think that article makes the best arguments FOR going to war with Iraq that I've seen so far. Much more persuasive and cohesive than anything I've heard on any of the right-wing talk radio I've been listeing to for the past couple days. (Ironically, written by a self-proclamed liberal.) Interesting. It is food for thought indeed, not that I necessarily . (In case anybody missed it.. [www.salon.com] )
2003-03-19 20:15:08

Bitscape: agree with the conclusion. (to finish my sentence)
2003-03-19 20:15:26

bouncing: I totally need a bigger filing cabinet. Being organized sure does suck.
2003-03-19 21:43:24

Linknoid: Bitscape, people who call into talk radio are generally idiots. I couldn't believe some of the stupid stuff people say on talk radio, even when I agree with the point they're trying to make. Most people who call in have no clue what they're talking about.
2003-03-19 22:57:27

Linknoid: And no, it's not a lack of ability to argue coherently, it's stuff that should be moderated -1 Just Plain Wrong, or -1 Troll
2003-03-19 22:58:43

2003-03-20 08:35:52

Linknoid: Don't you people in Colorado believe in tire chains? Yeah, it's hard on the road, but its better than ending up with cars in the ditch. I guess there's some pretty steep drops around here if you go off the road, though.
2003-03-20 09:21:14

Bitscape: Generally speaking, tire chains are only necessary on high mountain roads or during extreme storm conditions, which very rarely occur with much severity in the city. Our recent case obviously falls into the latter category.
2003-03-20 10:03:05

Jäger: War is not the greatest evil.
2003-03-20 16:36:00

Jäger would probably lable genocide as the darkest evil.
2003-03-20 16:37:17

Bitscape would submit that genocide is a form of war.
2003-03-20 16:47:43

Bitscape: But a good point, nonetheless.
2003-03-20 16:48:52

Bitscape: I suppose one could also say other things, such as disease, might qualify. (/me recalls a quote by Madonna that AIDS is "The greatest tragedy of the 20th century." Which I don't agree with, BTW.)
2003-03-20 16:51:09

Bitscape: I could revise it to say, "War is *among* the darkest of evils." But that wouldn't have quite as much punch of hyperbole, now would it? :)
2003-03-20 16:59:44

Bitscape compiles kernel modules on Dagobah while the kernel image compiles on Argo.
2003-03-20 20:05:30

Bitscape: And it's not even close. Argo compiled an entire kernel image before Dagobah finished with a few puny modules.
2003-03-20 20:08:29

Jäger checks in from the as-of-yet unnamed fest
2003-03-21 00:28:14

Bitscape: We here!
2003-03-21 01:39:26

Jäger thinks perhaps he'll regenerate soon
2003-03-21 04:46:39

Linknoid: [slashdot.org]
2003-03-21 11:54:18

Bitscape: Chillingly true.
2003-03-21 15:10:02

Linknoid: Lancers are wimps. Put rangers with them, and they'll do pretty well, but that's because rangers are just that good.
2003-03-22 08:06:06

Linknoid: I've read that in most multiplayer games, a council player will almost always start out getting super scouts (scout/ranger/ranger). Their mobility means excellent flanking ability. Use your slow troops to engage the front line, then put your super scouts in pressed formation and run them around back so they can engage the enemy support and captain units directly. Once the captain is dead, they'll rout rather quickly.
2003-03-22 08:08:46

Linknoid: But the real reason I hate lancers is because they can't take a village or town on their own. The footmen defending it get +5 vs. horsed units (and other cavalry types, like void beasts, gauri hammers, hauron windriders, etc),
2003-03-22 08:12:29

Linknoid: And the main time to build lancers is the early game when you need to be out capturing independant towns/new settlements. And then later on, dragoons are better. They might cost twice the iron upkeep, but they're really that much tougher. Of course, if you're royalist, you'll probably want to get cavaliers instead.
2003-03-22 08:15:59

Linknoid: But the best non-elite is probably massed crossbow/wizard/wizard. Crossbows do insane amounts of ranged damage, enough that the -20 vs. buildings becomes irrelevant. They fire slow, that's why you need a mass of them together.
2003-03-22 08:18:34

Linknoid: But even in hand-to-hand combat, they're as good as infantry.
2003-03-22 08:19:12

Linknoid: And wizard lightning does morale damage to the enemy, so you get enough of them, the enemy will probably rout fast if they don't die.
2003-03-22 08:20:16

Linknoid: By the way, I've been playing a lot of Kohan at night this last week.
2003-03-22 08:22:13

Bitscape: My favorite company lately: Cavaliers, a ranger, and a celebrant. But still, it wasn't quite enough to defeat the empire of Yanthor.
2003-03-23 05:34:56

Linknoid: Try nationalist, they can get elite guard/invoker combo with only a single town upgrade (200 gold)
2003-03-23 11:42:26

Linknoid: As opposed to the other elites, which require a city: 450 gold for 2 upgrades for Ceyah and Royalist, 330 for Council
2003-03-23 11:54:02

Linknoid: Wow, that was an impressive game
2003-03-23 22:41:43

Linknoid: Jaeger and Yanthor, you could have rolled over both bitscape and humblik early on if you hadn't wasted your forces on the dragon
2003-03-23 22:42:40

Linknoid: I also might point out that in massive static battles, maelstrom engines rule the day. The only ones I saw were controlled by the computer. They're hardly mobile, but mobility seemed to be less of an issue in a lot of the biggest battles..
2003-03-23 22:44:24

Linknoid: Bitscape, many consider Darius Javidan one of the best heros. Once you could afford better companies, you should have probably put him with something other than super scouts, lancers at the very least.
2003-03-23 22:45:53

Linknoid: Humblik, when you're huge - in the mana, trading in an iron export for a mana forge in your starting town would have been very helpful. And mass prophets and shadow priests may have made a big difference. Put them in a ratio of about 3 prophets to 1 shadow priest. Probably good with a mix of skeletal warriors and bone bows, I'm not sure if this is better than maelstrom engines for breaking seiges, but if you get enough shadow prophets, it doesn't matter what units the enemy has, they'll never unparalyze.
2003-03-23 22:50:24

Linknoid: Also, early ceyah strategy, put shadow demons with bone bows. The shadelings are worthless for dealing damage, but they'll keep the enemy from engaging your bows while the bows deal real damage. Shadow demons with melee units are relatively useless.
2003-03-23 22:52:35

Linknoid: OK, I've said enough. I wish I could have participated.
2003-03-23 22:54:09

Bitscape: Argo returns to the Laser Fortress.
2003-03-23 22:58:55

Bitscape departs the laser fortress to return to his mom's place for some much needed sleep.

Jäger: We were hoping that killing the dragon would give us sufficient gold to compensate us for our efforts. I ended up with something like 165 gold.
2003-03-24 10:57:01

Yanthor: Yes, and we also had no clue where everyone was.
2003-03-24 13:12:44

Yanthor: It is easy to see those things on replay, but we had no idea where players were. We didn't want to strike the nearest player and turn out to be an AI, and incur their wrath. We were hoping to be the quiet threat by letting the other two teams engage each other extensively while slowly expanding our territory.
2003-03-24 13:14:00

Yanthor: I should clarify: I at least, was worried not about bringing about retaliation by one player, but by the whole team, which was by far strongest early on because of the big cities they get.
2003-03-24 13:15:14

Yanthor: The AI team, that is
2003-03-24 13:15:36

Linknoid: Bitscape was in a bad spot. I would have had a hard time where he was. He took the full brunt of all AI attacks. Although looking at the replay, the AIs really should have overrun Yanthor, except it was too stupid to keep its forces together
2003-03-24 14:06:42

Linknoid: But I assumed you guy already knew where Bitscape was, I thought you had scouted at least that far. It's hard to tell on the replay, espcially what's going on with 3 teams :-)
2003-03-24 14:08:00

Linknoid: I'll now take this discussion to the content collective: [contentcollective.org]

Jäger beats the Quest for Darius (Medium)
2003-03-26 13:39:59

Linknoid: The whole campaign?! Or just the first mission?
2003-03-26 16:03:32

Jäger: The whole campain. The last mission took me five and a half hours of game play.
2003-03-26 16:13:02

Linknoid: How many missions are there? I'm on #12 of the Ceyah campaign, I think
2003-03-26 20:00:31

Linknoid just beat the Ceyah campaign on hard, there are 14 missions in all. Although #14 isn't really a mission.
2003-03-27 02:08:29

Linknoid: Unfortunately, I saved #13 film as 12, and it let me overwrite #12 without warning.
2003-03-27 02:09:29

Linknoid: Even worse, it didn't overwrite #12, and I lost #13, which was a HUGE mission compared to #12
2003-03-27 10:12:17

Linknoid: I think I spent about 4 hours on it, although the last hour or so was getting my new kohans ascended and going for +2000 economy
2003-03-27 10:13:11

Yanthor: Bitscape, while I appreciate and agree with your disgust regarding the choice to go to war, I don't think we can honestly say it is the darkest of evils. Personally I can think of things like Genocide that are worse.
2003-03-27 23:50:01

Jäger recalls saying that exact thing last week. :)
2003-03-28 00:10:06

Bitscape: Hmmmm... Should I repeat what I said last week too? :)
2003-03-28 00:11:24

Jäger: Children of Dune and Alias fans will be amused to know that Edward Atterton played both Duncan Idaho's ghola and Sydney's dead fiancee Danny Hecht
2003-03-30 01:44:15

Yanthor: Jaeger: That's cool! I didn't notice that.
2003-03-31 08:15:16

Yanthor: Bitscape: what did you say last week?
2003-03-31 08:15:40

Linknoid: Watching The Mattrix and Tron back to back is really wierd
2003-03-31 09:19:04

Bitscape: My comment was that genocide could be considered a form of war. (Although, fortunately, that's not what is currently taking place.)
