A Festive Gathering: The First Half

When I arrived at the Boulder Compound on Thursday evening, Jaeger, Yanthor, Humblik, Kiesa, and Captain Logan were in the living room with their computers assembled around 2 tables.

As I brought Argo in, Humblik and Yanthor were getting underway with a game of Kohan: Ahriman's Gift.

After their game, we made a fortification run to Safeway.

Back at the Boulder Compound, we had an opening ceremony.

Yanthor generously offered to purchase downloadable copies of Ahriman's Gift for Jaeger and I so all 4 of us could play it together, which both of us accepted.

After downloading it, the next couple hours were spent trying to hack it into working. (2 big issues: One is that Argo's root partition is almost full, but the game insisted on putting its files in /usr instead of allowing an install in /usr/local, which I eventually worked around using an ugly symlink hack. The other problem is that the Transgaming download site only had a slightly older version of the game, so Yanthor and Humblik had to rollback their installations in order to interface with Jaeger and I.)

With all critical issues worked out, the 4 of us played several cooperative games in which were were teamed up against computer players. Yanthor and Humblik were clearly the most skilled players. Though I've spent many hours playing Immortial Soveriegns, it took me a couple games to get to on playing competently, because I wasn't used to team play, and Ahriman's Gift also presented some new additions. (Though the changes are far from drastic, so the modifications were pretty easy to get used to. BTW, lancers are awesome.) Jaeger was a relative Kohan newbie, but after a few games, he was obviously getting better at it too.

At around 0500 or so, Jaeger retired, Yanthor crashed on one of the couches, and I crashed with my sleeping bag on another.

Slept for a couple hours, until I heard Captain Logan and his mom getting ready to leave for their trip to Oklahoma.

Friday consisted of the following: Games of Magic, Yanthor's specialty egg cooking, watching coverage of the war (is it my imagination, or does the fact that it is happening cast a somewhat gloomy shadow over the mood of this otherwise festive event?), random web surfing, bits of poking and prodding at the Content Collective code, and of course, more Kohan playing.

Friday evening, we ate soup and sweetrolls cooked by Kiesa. I made use of the Boulder Compound's shower facilities, and felt much better for having done so. Then, more Kohan.

We ran a few team games, in which Yanthor and I took on Jaeger and Humblik, with a couple of lone computer players thrown in for fun. This configuration made for some of the most interesting games yet.

Now, pretty much everyone else has gone to sleep. Givin the minimal amount I had last night, I'm thinking I'll do the same very shortly.

I'll go on record as saying that this gathering was an excellent idea. Jaeger and Kiesa (and Jaeger's absent parents) are to be commended for providing the venue to host it, complete with food and other amenities. Yay!
