When it rains...

Saturday, September 29, 2001 02:00

Having just heard the news of bouncing's newly unemployed status, I feel like it's time to write something about it all, but I'm not sure exactly what. I was going to do a nice full movielog entry, but now, my mind just isn't into it, so a single paragraph will have to do.

The Others (*** 1/2)

Saturday, September 29, 2001 00:25

It begins with the scream of a woman awaking from a nightmare, and goes from there. Set in a fog-enshrouded house in England after World War 2, Grace (played by Nicole Kidman, in her second surprisingly great movie this year) and her children grapple with terror, madness, and what might lie beyond. Excellent visual work, mood build up, and stage / lighting work. This is classic style horror, very well done. The creeps continue to tingle after the end credits have finished.

Grumpus was a Rock'n'Roll Legend

Friday, September 28, 2001 20:39

I have recently been informed, and witnessed for myself, that Grumpus, the resident parakeet of the Louisville Compound, died sometime during the night last night, presumably due to natural causes. Grumpus lived a long and loud life, and was a great hero in the eyes of many. Although the tv series in which he set was to star never quite made it to the screen, the memory of his sounds will live on through the ages. The Louisville Compound is now in mourning.

for a minute there i lost myself

Friday, September 28, 2001 18:09

Thursday, Sept 27, 20:35. Consciousness gradually overtook the brain, inaudible tones still engulfing the mind -- an overpowering undercurrent of haunting melodies which echoed the essence of the empty soul beneath. A state of awakeness only made the patterns stronger. Look at the clock. 8:37.

Enterprise

Wednesday, September 26, 2001 21:51

What would life be like without some Star Trek series on the air every season? The world hasn't known such an existence since 1986. Now, chances are that this will remain the case for the foreseeable future.

Mental haze

Tuesday, September 25, 2001 01:14

After spending most of his weekend playing Kohan, sleeping, and watching psychotic DVD movies, Bitscape wasn't feeling very tired Sunday night circa midnight. So what did he do? Popped in the Basic Instinct disc again, and watched the Director / Director of Photography commentary track, in which Verhoeven and De Bont discuss all issues related to the film's plot and its making. At 0230, went down for four hours of odd dreams which featured medieval soldiers conquering cities, treacherous mansions next to the ocean, and ice picks, all mushed together in a bizarre weave.

Memento (****)

Sunday, September 23, 2001 04:06

Memento is simply a great movie. Anyone who hasn't seen it should watch it. Anyone who has seen it should watch it again, because they probably forgot it all anyway. I should know. I speak from experience.

Total Recall (****)

Sunday, September 23, 2001 04:01

A classic. I'm not generally a huge Schwarzenegger fan, but this is my favorite of all the films he has starred in. Yes, I think it even beats T2. Of course, my perspective could be somewhat colored by the memory of a ski trip long ago. (<reference only xenites will fully appreciate>Was it "10 winters ago?" Oh god, I think it might have been.</reference only xenites will fully appreciate>) A ski trip during which myself and several other naughty church school boys went out and rented an R rated movie. (The appropriate reaction at this time is a shocked gasp, followed by "Tsk tsk tsk")

The Truth Is Out There

Friday, September 21, 2001 00:04

"Scully, open your eyes. Don't you see? It wasn't Arab terrorists who boarded those airplanes and crashed them into the World Trade Center. That was all a setup. Those flight manuals, the supposed 'passengers' who hijacked the planes. A ruse, to fool you and the American people into thinking this was an attack by some disgruntled nut from Afghanistan. Look beyond it!"

60's activism, 21st century style

Sunday, September 16, 2001 01:17

I've sometimes thought that if another major anti-war movement reminiscent of the Vietnam era were to sweep the nation, Boulder, Colorado would be the hatching grounds. Anyone who has lived in or around the area ought to appreciate that.

Work week ends; people are good; heavy heart

Friday, September 14, 2001 18:25

Today was an unusual Friday. The company provided a yummy lunch of hot dogs and bratwurst (the only "charge" being that people were asked to put some money in a box to be sent to the Red Cross). Company movie day went ahead as previously planned. We watched Office Space via DVD and a projector, which was as absolutely hilarious as it was when I saw it long ago, perhaps even moreso due to the awareness that it was being watched by a room full of office workers. Heehee. (Yes, this is proof positive that I work in a cool company.)

Shock

Tuesday, September 11, 2001 18:57

This morning, Argo gradually nudged my brain into grudging consciousness, slowly fading in the music as she always does. I ignored it as long as I could, unwilling to emerge from my dreamland. This was everyday. This was expected. This was the usual, ordinary routine. I finally dragged myself out of bed, checked email, and hopped in the shower. While I was waking up, the world outside was being plunged into unprecedented, unthinkable events two timezones away.

2001-09-12 07:26:06-06

Drizzt: i guess when i say "doing well" it doesn't really apply to the last couple of days. information is processing slowly. it has to filter through a senseless haze and even the most simple things seem a bit askew when interpretted.
2001-09-12 08:12:11-06

Shadowkiller: BTW, Bitscape informs me (wink wink) that he still plans to watch The Siege again, because he believes it is both relevant and prophetic. But not until a little time has passed for things to calm down.

2001-09-18 20:01:21-06

Content vulture: Where's the fresh content?
2001-09-19 18:19:03-06

Bitscape: I think it went hiding under a rock.
2001-09-19 20:33:10-06

Captain Logan: I don't blame it.
2001-09-19 20:51:02-06

Jäger checks in from College Place
2001-09-20 10:23:16-06

Jäger: lol
2001-09-21 12:24:42-06

Drizzt: anyone here still play magic? i have a rules question that i can't remember the answer to. it has been a while.
2001-09-21 12:49:44-06

Bitscape: Drizzt, when it came to Magic rules, you were the master among us. If you don't know, it would be safe to assume none of us do. :)
2001-09-21 18:13:04-06

Bitscape: I haven't really played at all since ucollege.edu. A game or two with Jaeger a while back, and that's it.
2001-09-21 18:14:08-06

Jäger agrees with Bitscape
2001-09-21 18:15:18-06

Neelix: Drizzt: I haven't played since playing with Humblik while rooming with him, but I'll take a stab at it.
2001-09-21 22:58:11-06

Linknoid: Drizzt: I stopped playing a while back, but I had pretty much all the rules memorized, and quite a few card specific rulings as well, so I might give it a shot if you want.
2001-09-23 17:16:19-06

Bitscape: No, I am not an employee of PepsiCo. I swear. [members.home.com]
2001-09-23 23:20:15-06

bouncing: How many lines of code do you think that is?
2001-09-24 11:31:23-06

Linknoid: ignore this, I'm just testing something
2001-09-24 14:19:56-06

Linknoid: Just to make sure everyone knows, Wednesday is the premiere of the new Star Trek, "Enterprise" on UPN
2001-09-24 14:25:55-06

Morning Guy: I hate the night Jäger right now
2001-09-25 01:22:25-06

bouncing: Check it out: [www.kenkinder.com]
2001-09-25 09:01:58-06

Drizzt: linknoid: if an artifact ability starts a stack and shatter is played on top does the ability still activate? in the old rules it would have. i can't remember what the newest rules say.
2001-09-25 10:43:42-06

Drizzt: anyone see the newest trailer for LOTR? it premiered last night during the new episode of angel. WOW. if you have ever read the book the trailer will amaze you. hell, it will amaze you if you haven't
2001-09-25 10:45:13-06

Drizzt: btw. who is shadowkiller. give me some hints. the name sounds familiar from tradewars.
2001-09-25 10:46:51-06

Shadowkiller: lol. heehee. Very familiar. Yes. I am nowhere, and I am everywhere.
2001-09-25 11:08:33-06

Shadowkiller gradually recovers from the torture inflicted by Night Guy.
2001-09-25 11:09:20-06

Linknoid: drizzt: Once a spell or ability goes on the stack, it cannot be removed except by countering it, either with another spell or ability, or because everything it targets is not a legal target when it resolves (as long as it has at least one valid target when it resolves, it is not countered).
2001-09-25 16:38:01-06

Drizzt: linknoid: if i understand you correctly, there is no way to stop an artifact from causing its effect. if it is activated and a disenchant or shatter is played the artifact will be destroyed but its affect will take place.
2001-09-26 07:44:37-06

Linknoid: drizzt: Once a spell or ability goes on the stack, it cannot be removed except by countering it, either with another spell or ability, or because everything it targets is not a legal target when it resolves (as long as it has at least one valid target when it resolves, it is not countered).
2001-09-26 11:33:10-06

Linknoid: that is correct, except I think there are a few cards in the whole game that have the ability to counter activated abilities. Or you could make its targets invalid by returning them to their owners hand, phasing them out, sending them to the graveyard or library, or some other such effect.
2001-09-26 11:38:21-06

Linknoid: Strange, I do not know how my message above got repeated. I did not submit it twice.
2001-09-27 00:18:14-06

bouncing is now officially laid-off.
2001-09-28 22:32:49-06

Bitscape: woah
2001-09-29 00:05:37-06

Linknoid: That makes me real confident as I try to figure out how to search for a job :-(
2001-09-29 14:04:11-06

bouncing: *Shrug* I'm personally not worried. The market's not AS bad as they say. No 1999, but still...
2001-09-29 14:32:18-06

Bitscape: Regardless of the rest of the show, everyone always comments about the crappy new theme music in Enterprise.
