Day off

Today, I was off work. So this afternoon, I ventured across the plain of Colorado, where I visited not one, but two Temptation Zones, both of which, to my great dismay, appeared to be completely sold out of Buffy Season 3 sets.

Luckily, at the second temptation zone I visited, just before I was about to leave the store in defeat, I spotted one of the drones on the sales floor with an open box next to him. In it were Buffy Season 3 box sets. I managed to snag one of them from him and purchase it immediately. (US$40 is the right price for an entire season of Quality Television Programming. Psychologically, at least, it makes me feel like I can afford it, it even if there might be other better ways to spend my money.)

With the acquisition a success, I laid in a course at warp factor 7 for the Boulder Compound, where docking cleararce was granted for the U.S.S. Tobias.

Once there, I rendezvoused with Commodore Jaeger, who gave me a tour of the newly constructed facility. Or, I mean... He showed me the souvenirs he had acquired while in Rome. And a coffee table book of bridges which included a wide photo of a bridge he had visited.

I also got a first chance to see Jaeger's newly revamped online photolog engine, which he was using for the plethora of digital pictures he had captured on the other side of the world.

In the Alcove, Jaeger pulled out a stack of burned cds with digitized Babylon 5 Season 2 episodes (which may or may not have originated from some unknown source that might or might not be west of the city of Boulder), and placed them in my hand. Mmmmmm... B5.

After perusing the gigantic volume of photos for a while, I departed the Boulder Compound with a stack of B5 cds in hand (not to mention the Buffy Season 3 DVD pack acquired earlier), and set a course for the Dark Horse, where food could be consumed in the company of other BLUG members before the meeting.

(On the way to the Dark Horse, I realized that I had made an assumption which may or may not have been correct: When Jaeger placed the cds in my hand, I assumed he intended for me to borrow them, although I don't think this had been explicitly stated. Had I just taken B5 episodes he and Kiesa intended to view in the near future, potentially depriving them of scifi excellence? Perish the thought! But I later confirmed that yes, as I had thought, Jaeger did intend for me to take this set and watch at my leisure. :)

There were only 2 other BLUG people at the Dark Horse tonight. A much lower turnout than usual. Chris suspected that perhaps it was because his announcement email had not included info about the Dark Horse, and because the BLUG meeting was being combined with the BJUG (Boulder Java Users Group) meeting and starting an hour earlier than usual.

After a quick burger, we headed to the Fleming Law building, where BJUG was about to begin. The turnout for BJUG easily dwarfed that of a typical BLUG meeting. Nearly all the seats in the courtroom were filled.

We listened as the flamboyant speaker gave a talk about.... Well, I don't remember exactly what it was about, but it was interesting. You know... layers, patterns, enterprise applications. Yada yada.

During the "halftime", there was free pizza and soda, provided by one of the sponsors of the event. That was nutty. Cool.

Before the second half of the talk began, I spotted Zan Lynx, and said hi.

During the talk, I seriously began to think that maybe it would be a Good Idea for me to add Java to my list of skills to improve my chances of finding better employment. (I don't just mean putting the word "Java" on my resumé. I mean actually learning it. And no, I don't consider a 3-month class I took 4 years ago to qualify me as having any knowledge or skill whatsoever.)

After the meeting, Zan Lynx and I talked briefly. In regard to my job search, he suggested that I just get my resumé spread as far and wide as possible, the sooner the better. This somewhat conflicts with my annoying perfectionist tendency of thinking I should tweak it endlessly to be "perfect" before distributing it to Everybody. But I know he's right. I just need to get going on it.

I hailed the Boulder Compound again, and discussed the status of Hydrogen with Commodore Jaeger. scottgalvin.com had delivered it to the Boulder Compound while I was at B/JLUG. It appeared to him that the RAID system had done something funky, and we concluded that there was little to be gained by me wandering over again. (As had been discussed earlier.)

I proceeded back to the Laser Fortress, where I sit at this moment.

I now have a viewing quandry. I have, in the one hand, a box of Buffy Season 3 episodes waiting to be opened. In the other, I hold a stack of cds with encoded B5 episodes. (My third hand is being used to type this paragraph.)

Which will I insert into Argo's drive?

... ... ... [the tension mounts]
