Rage offline, I'm not sleeping

Since my brain and body are currently denying me the pleasure of sleep, I embark on the third rambling of the evening which may not see the light of rage for a while.

Before attempting to go to bed a few minutes ago, it dawned on me to try checking my local mail on Argo. (I rarely get messages directly here, so I have no alerting / notification setup, and I didn't even think about looking until then. Duuuuuh!) Sure enough. A message from Jaeger about the status of rage.

Apparently, it's in another (this time slightly more dramatic) transition. With some luck, it'll probably end up on somebody's cable modem, at least in the short term. (If it's the same ISP as mine, which I strongly suspect is the case, the outgoing bandwidth will not be nearly as plentiful as incoming, but certainly better than nothing.)

This turn of events has me considering the possibility of putting my domain (or should that be plural?) to a bit more active use. Historically, I haven't done a whole lot with it in the web serving capacity (excepting occassional sideshow amusements), mostly because rage has had far superior bandwidth, and provided all the services I needed for hosting my stuff.

But with this new situation, if rage is going to be in the same bandwidth boat as Argo, it almost makes sense to make the (as of this moment, non-functional) bitscape.org domain a semi-primary outlet for my content.

This idea has one big pitfall. Over the years, the content farmers with accounts on rage have evolved a very useful engine for cross-website sharing and exchange known as Content Solutions. In a bitscape.org Lounge world, that aspect of the fun is lost. (Precluding the possibility of performing a revamp of the protocol, as bouncing suggested a while ago, to use something like SOAP for multi-host community content.)

But anyway, here's the short term plan. Put the non-solutions version of the Lounge on bitscape.org again (should be a matter of moving some files around) either tonight or tomorrow, depending on how tired I am after I finish writing this. It will serve as a backup. If rage goes down again, bitscape.org will be the place to go for Bitscape's latest. (I suppose people could even get to it between now and when rage comes back up, but I'm not sure how many content vultures know about it right now.)

I don't know what the situation is going to be. In the event that rage goes down for an extended period of time, I may also put up a read-only version of the Collective backup on contentcollective.org. (hmmm... allowing posting would be even better, but that involves the possibility of some major pain in the ass syncing problems.) That's worst case though, if Rage ends up homeless or something. (Given the state of the economy, we can hope it's only rage we're talking about when using that word.)

A word on funding. If we get into a situation where Rage can no longer be subsidised by Scott's entrepreneurial ventures, I would be willing to chip in to get it hosted somewhere (as long as I remain employed to be able to afford it). (Wow, imagine that! Actually paying for the quality web hosting I've been getting free for several years.)

Now, I'm gonna see about getting some working lounge code on bitscape.org. This concludes my last rambling for the evening. (I think.)
