Suffering

Monday, April 30, 2001 23:35

This morning, on the way to work, I saw a chipmunk crossing the road. It was coming from the left side of a two-lane stretch, scampering to the right. It stopped right in the center of the pavement, on the double yellow line, as if waiting for the cars to pass before continuing with its morning exercise through the fresh spring air and sunshine.

No, that title doesn't make any sense, nor is it a reference to anything known to me. Trying to write sensible titles to ramblings which have essensially no unique content has become tiresome. Hence, I have now taken up the practice of making up random words and syllables and stringing them together. Welcome to the 21st century.

Attempt at a rambling

Currently sitting in irc. Various characters have been popping in and out throughout the evening -- some real, some fictional, and some are just... something in between.

Back at home

Saturday, April 21, 2001 20:47

Today, of course, was the day I went to the annual Starfest event. Great fun was to be had there. I have decided that instead of writing a lengthy summary here, I will document it in the Content Collective this time. A full announce tile will be posted, from which I will make a branching trail, where there will hopefully be enough room for all the tangents I feel like taking, as they come to mind. Let us enter...

It's now official. I am going to Starfest this weekend. (I have not yet decided whether I will go to the optional Friday night stuff which is included for no additional charge, but Saturday is a definite.) Goodie.

Eat a little leftovers from the fridge. Take the Heavy Gear II game for a spin (well, actually, just learning the interface. I haven't actually played it "for real" yet.) Sleep. Wake up and go on irc, where TransBot and Jaeger were the only other attendees. (TransBot doesn't talk very often though.)

Movie-heavy weekend, I suppose

Sunday, April 15, 2001 23:44

Would it scare any readers if I said that there were two films I watched this weekend that I did NOT log? (But they were not theatrical viewings, and both of them have been logged on previous occassions, so entering these is hardly top priority.)

Memento (*** 1/2)

Sunday, April 15, 2001 19:45

After glancing through Katz's review, I knew this was a movie I would have to see. I figured it was some new release I had just not heard about, since I haven't been watching many ads lately. But a standard scan revealed that it was playing at none of the nearby multiplexes; not even the big old AMC 24! Curses.

Pump Up the Volume (*** 1/2)

Sunday, April 15, 2001 04:27

When I saw this movie years ago on VHS, while I was in high school, it left a strong impression on my mind. An impression which I think lingered over the proceeding years. I might even say that the late night rantings of Christian Slater as the pirate radio D.J. would provide, in my subconsciousness, an inspiration for some of the elements that exist in my own Random Ramblings even today, although through a different medium, of course.

The joys of taxes, unwatched films, etc

Friday, April 13, 2001 00:16

Alright, I think I've just about had my fill of automated emails from online "e"-businesses for one day. tuxgames.com sending all sorts of wonderful info about the progress of the Tribes 2 shipment (including a mass mailing from the CEO, making what I see as an honorable attempt to set things right with customers who preordered and had credit cards charged weeks or months ago, before Loki decided to lower the price). Stuff from ebgames (have I gone overboard?) about my round of get 'em while they're $10 purchase (just shipped), a message notification from keslin.com, and then... oh yes. Taxes. Yipee. Taxes.

I suppose it's old news now. I, along with everyone else in this household, was snowed in today. Crazy stuff happening. DIA had to shut down for a while, as did a bunch of the highways. Power was out for a while here too. But everything seems more or less normal again at the moment.

Jäger: Oh, so is my log-checking the stuff of legends now?
2001-04-13 19:41:23-06

Jäger points out that one can download Mozilla for Windows. Mozilla is the only browser I'm aware of that properly displays the png transparencies in my page. (Although I've heard NetPositive might.)
2001-04-13 19:42:58-06

bouncing points out that you can download Linux, and get rid of windows altogether.

2001-04-14 22:24:01-06

Humblik: I just noticed there is an IE 6 preview now. :-P
2001-04-14 22:46:02-06

Humblik: Wow, Dr. Show can be quite profound at times. I just read the quote from 24 August 1999.
2001-04-14 23:15:32-06

Bitscape: I do indeed read Humblik's changelogs, as they all get posted to Content Solutions headlines.
2001-04-15 00:49:38-06

Bitscape: Either I don't understand the description right, or cannot reproduce the bug you are referring to. For me, the links do show up on all sides when you go to the ground view of the tile linked to.
2001-04-15 00:50:55-06

bse: all fine for me too, humblink
2001-04-15 09:57:43-06

Humblik: I was actually meaning at the ground level. I was expecting to be able to enter a new message instead of linking to a different message path. The example I gave shows the message path going north, east, and south. The link to the west looks like I should be able to enter a new message instead of linking to a possibly non-related message. I was thinking it would be nice to have some sort of indicator that there was a different message path in these types of situations.
2001-04-15 20:29:35-06

Humblik: I hope that makes more since.
2001-04-15 20:32:05-06

Neelix: Yes, NetPositive handles the transparencies for PNGs fine. It's part of the beauty of Be's Translator system. They write the PNG translator correctly once, and it works that way in all apps, including NetPositive (The BeOS's Browser, for the less informed)
2001-04-15 21:21:18-06

Humblik: After 20 minutes of mindlessly click the reload button I finally got to see Dr. Show's quote. Maybe I should just ask for Jaeger's quote file.
2001-04-15 21:57:32-06

Humblik: er. guess that should be clicking.
2001-04-15 21:59:10-06

Humblik: Mmm, mindless clicking is such a nice way to avoid studying.
2001-04-15 22:00:25-06

Bitscape: Um, I think the fact that it's filled in solid at the edge using the color of the neighboring tile should indicate that something exists there, even if there wasn't a creation path to or from it. Does NetPositive display that? (Or, wild guess: maybe the NetPositive renderer leaves table cells that don't have any text transparent even if their bgcolor attribute is set?)
2001-04-15 22:25:13-06

Bitscape: What's hilarious is that I have no idea how the Collective looks in IE, even though that's the browser that, what, 80 or 90 percent of web surfers supposable use now. But nobody has complained, so I assume either it looks fine, or nobody is surfing the Collective with IE. So I'm not worried about it. ;)
2001-04-15 22:28:10-06

Linknoid: Well, Bitscape, I just tried out content collective on IE from the Microlab, and it looks just fine. BTW, can someone provide a link to the above referenced Dr. Show quote?
2001-04-16 08:43:25-06

bse: well bitscape, as you already know i'm a ppc owner now, IE is currently the browser of choice (i tried out iCab, but frankly, it's worse than konquereror); and no problems with teh collective at my 15.2" widescreen end. :)
2001-04-16 09:05:38-06

bse: i havent dared to download ppc mozilla yet.. maybe i'll do that later...
2001-04-16 09:09:45-06

scott: have to worry. damn site cut me off.

2001-04-29 09:17:36-06

2001-04-29 11:14:18-06

bse: actually, i was complaning about the CSS part.. if you have a div layer inside another one - in IE they expand together when there is content. but in mozilla the layer inside a layer expands, but the bottom layer doesnt.
2001-04-30 07:19:11-06

bse: so i've had to hardcode teh size of the backing layers, just so it doesnt look like arse in mozilla. which i can tell you really pissed me off.

Bitscape: Ah, I see what you mean.
2001-04-30 21:36:39-06

Jäger: we're back!
2001-04-30 21:40:59-06

Bitscape: I too have noticed that Mozilla does not resize parent elements based on the size of child nodes. Like you say, it pretty much requires you to set everything up to the top level element in order to work.
2001-04-30 23:45:45-06

Bitscape: Not sure what the w3c says about this. My bet would be that it's one of those undefined aspects of the spec.
