This weekend, this month, this year is just going by way too damn fast. Sunday, August 20, 2000. Crazy. Yeah.

This weekend, I've... played a lotta Quake. Gotten Argo feeling a little more at home, by downloading her a nicer theme and some good backgrounds. This sawfish wm is pretty slick, once you get it configured a bit. Currently running the spiffish theme, which I'm liking.

I also did some benchmarking today. Well, at least I attempted to do so. Ripped a couple tracks from a couple cds, and encoded each into mp3 and Ogg Vorbis format. To make my oggs, I used the only encoder I know of, oggenc. For the mp3's, I used bladeenc.

Played each, and tried to compare. On my speakers, you really can't tell the difference. The oggs were about 25% larger, until I realized that the ogg encoder was defaulting to a bitrate of 160. When I reduced it to 128 (approximately), the oggs were actually smaller than the mp3s, and I still couldn't tell a difference in sound quality on my hardware (which ain't saying much). The ogg player (ogg123) did take a little more CPU to though. I doubt Dagobah would have been able to weather it. (I used mpg123, the most efficient mp3 player I know to exist, for the mp3s)

Of course, my whole reason for doing this was to determine what format and bitrate to use when I execute the plan of converting every disc in my collection into an electronic format. If everything else were equal, I would definitely go with ogg, because its creators have somehow managed to create the entire format without running into problems with the software patent nasties. Based on my initial tests, it looks like it may actually live up to the claims made that it's technically superior to mp3, at least in some regards. Certainly worth considering.

Other than that, I did quite a lot of sleeping this weekend. I think I needed it, after the way I've been staying up late so many nights lately. I also really should've cleaned my room this weekend. It's utterly hideous. But... with Argo and quake3 just a keystroke away in one direction, and a big pile of trash, papers, and other bits of who knows what to wade through in the other, guess which is easier to dive into?

The path of least resistance. Is that how life is to be lived? Duuuuuh. Too much to ponder.

Oh, and I guess I could say I saw another screening of The Worst Scifi Movie Ever. I still can't believe I drove all the way to Boulder to see... that. Again. Oh well. Another good laugh. ;)

I think I'll go to bed in a bit.
