Clockers (***)

Monday, December 31, 2001 00:52

A film about a murder mystery set amidst the drug-ridden slums of Brooklyn. Not exactly pleasant subject matter (but realistic, I suspect, unfortunately). It moved kind of slow in places, but the acting was really good.

Gladiator (*** 1/2)

Sunday, December 30, 2001 03:44

I enjoyed this movie more tonight than when I first watched it. This despite the fact that the first time I saw it, it was on the big screen (this one is definitely designed for the big theater), and this time, it was on a relatively small television.

An unexpected evening

Sunday, December 30, 2001 03:22

Just as I was starting to hunker down for an evening with the IFC tv, the phone rang. My initial thought: "Oh great. Another telemarketer." On the off chance that it would be one of the few people who I personally know who have my number, I answered, fully prepared to hang up in a split second if I heard the voice of yet another sales drone.

Living in Oblivion (***)

Saturday, December 29, 2001 00:25

Once in a while, a film comes along that's just so unexpectedly fun and quirky that it leaves a lasting impression. Illuminata was such a film. Having now seen Living in Oblivion for a second time (thanks to the joys of encore cable screenings), I'd say it also falls into this category.

Contact (****)

Friday, December 28, 2001 03:56

This movie just doesn't get old.

How can it hold up so well and still be such an enjoyable experience even when I know the whole story almost by heart? (word for word in some sections.) I credit the awesome acting, amazing (usually very subtle) effects, and open-endedly thought provoking subject matter. Anyone who uses the words "slow" or "boring" to describe Contact wasn't paying attention at all, in my oh-so-humble opinion.

Ho Ho Ho! Christmas Content

Tuesday, December 25, 2001 00:57

Due to something resembling popular demand, I have decided to type a rambling tonight.

It is Christmas Eve. That mythical time of year when everyone drinks eggnog, Santa rides around shooting people, and Mr. Hankey spreads cheer to all the children who eat a high fiber diet.

The Gathering

Saturday, December 22, 2001 17:58

Watching spellbound through the 90 minute pilot, I was reminded of what I like so much about the little bits I've seen of Babylon 5. It's a show about all the different political factions from all the alien races being thrust together, all with their own interests, agendas, and history. All conspiring, making alliances, and pushing for their own unique vision of how things should be.

The replacement player

Saturday, December 22, 2001 15:51

As attentive collective vultures probably already know, Bitscape's DVD player broke down in the middle of the week; all attempts to use undocumented magic to revive it failed. This prompted Bitscape to vow never to buy a Sony player again, and then begin a quest for a new player, one that would hopefully be of better quality and last much longer.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (****)

Wednesday, December 19, 2001 18:27

On what might otherwise have been a calm and quiet morning, a stampede of geeks descended from all directions upon the theater, lining up outside for miles, all anxious to take a peek at the much-anticipated production of epic scale.

I write from the perspective of someone who saw Fellowship of the Ring without having read the Lord of the Rings books, although I did read The Hobbit long ago.

Content buffer overflow

Tuesday, December 18, 2001 21:57

Alright. So this evening after work, I was going to head to Suncoast in search of the B5 DVD as a last resort. (They're the most expensive place around, but they often carry stuff that other places don't have.) But on the way, I stopped in at Best Buy, knowing that I'd want to pick up Moulin Rouge without paying Suncoast prices anyway. Just for kicks, I checked the scifi section again. Bingo. Several Babylon 5 discs right there. Maybe they were a week late? Happy bank account depletion card goes swish on 2 counts. (Have I mentioned I'm an addict of all forms of entertainment digital?)

Slums of Beverly Hills (***)

Monday, December 17, 2001 00:14

This film portrays the life of a teenage girl going through puberty in a poor family in Beverly Hills during the 70s, living with her dad and two brothers. I suppose this could fall into the category of anti-teen-glam movie, in which the protagonist must deal with such traumas as the development of breasts ("Is this a deformity?"), menstruation, and life as a nomad. Its earthy, trailer park raunchiness (i.e. realism) often treads the thin line between utterly repulsive and funny.

The Big Picture (***)

Sunday, December 16, 2001 23:14

Kevin Bacon plays a film school graduate who goes to Hollywood where he encounters the soul-sucking insanity machine of the commercial movie industry. A touching film, also funny at times. It had some good stream of consciousness sequences, similar to the freeform style that would later be popularized in shows like Ally McBeal. A good, enjoyable film.

Bound (*** 1/2)

Sunday, December 16, 2001 05:12

Bound is a smart, sexy, suspenseful, stylish thriller, conceived by none other than the creative genius team known to the world as The Wachowski Brothers. By mainstream standards, it's edgy. It's erotic. It's vile. It's edge of your seat. It's a lot of fun.

Saturday, December 15, 2001 22:03

And a great white snow befell the land of Colorado. It unleashed its white fury; upon the Castle Lair, upon the Coffehouse Apartment, upon the Boulder Compound, and upon the Flagstaff Compound. And all the penguins sat in awe of the great storm.

BLUG and other funness

Friday, December 14, 2001 00:30

:set mode=down_to_earth

Tonight brought the event that is the monthly BLUG meeting. Zan Lynx and I went directly from work, to Best Buy, to Boulder (with me taking a brief stop at the ATM on the way; food stamps, hehe). Ate some good grub at Subway, and, in our usual form of late, arrived a few minutes late. (I think part of it has to do with my timing instincts still being attuned to the old NIST location, instead of the new place in the middle of university territory.)

Content farming

Tuesday, December 11, 2001 00:18

Content farming is like moisture farming. Or is it?

Maybe not. Oh well. So be it.

Having just managed to pull myself away from my Cube long enough to start a rambling, I'm trying not to be too distracted by the film that just started on IFC. Rather difficult, given that the trailer I saw yesterday looked really intriguing, and it's directed by Neil Jordan. And it's in the fantasy genre. Bah. I'm watching it. But I might ramble a bit at the same time.

Broadband is back!

Tuesday, December 4, 2001 21:53

It must have either happened during Farscape or one of the Buffys, because when I got home from work today, there was still no signal on the cable box. When I came back in the bedroom a few minutes ago, the signal light was active. With great anticipation, I plugged in an ethernet cable and ran dhcpcd eth1. Preso!

Downtime :( Gametime :)

Saturday, December 1, 2001 21:58

In an unusual twist, I woke up very early this morning. Earlier than I would normally wake up to go to work. I got up, checked slashdot, checked my email, and everything seemed normal. Spent a couple hours playing Star Wars. Horribly addictive, even though I suck at it. (Yes, this is a pattern. I enjoy playing video games, even though I suck at most of them.)

A couple hours later, I came back to Argo to do a little Collectivizing, and the server timed out. So did everything else I try to connect to. I tried doing tracerouts, and found that everything was mysteriously being routed to an address reserved for private networks, and not getting anywhere else from there. Doh.

Bitscape checks in from modem land
2001-12-01 19:50:07-07

Bitscape: After a day of downtime, clueless customer service reps who can do nothing, and little hope of getting reconnected in the near future, I would say it's official. ATT @home sucks.
2001-12-01 20:02:35-07

Linknoid: Hmm...from what I read AT&T doesn't have any control over @home yet. The judge gave @home permission to shut down their network as part of their bankrupcy filing
2001-12-01 20:33:29-07

Linknoid: All AT&T has is a bid to buy them, and @home is accusing the AT&T people on their board of dragging the company down so AT&T can get a good deal on @home's network
2001-12-01 20:34:59-07

Bitscape: Yeah, I'm considering dumping the whole thing if they don't get it straightened out pretty quick. What a bunch of squabbling children. In the meantime, their customers get stuck in the middle.
2001-12-01 22:08:32-07

Bitscape: Wow. The more I read, the more I think these execs are nothing but greedy, corrupt swine. If this is anywhere near true, where the *#@$ are the SEC and antitrust prosecutors? [www.dotcomscoop.com]
2001-12-02 01:53:48-07

Bitscape: In fact, if (and it is a big IF) the accusations in the last link are true, they might very well have a criminal case against higher ups at AT&T. I dunno though. IANAL.
2001-12-02 02:00:40-07

scott: consumers, have no fear. @home has been dead for a year. ATT is fine, tho, and they'll take care of us. [www.att.com]

2001-12-04 23:00:47-07

Bitscape: At least they are giving credit on service for 2 x the number of days people were down. Some people say they should give at least a whole month free for all that hassle.
2001-12-04 23:04:46-07

Bitscape: But me? I never saw a cent back when Qwest would screw up the DSL line for a week at a time, so compared to that, this is a pretty good deal!
2001-12-04 23:05:49-07

Bitscape: hmmm... these thoughts are getting a bit long I guess. Perhaps I should take them to the collective.
2001-12-04 23:06:30-07

Yanthor: trailer: [www.scifi.com]
2001-12-06 11:31:19-07

Yanthor: Also, rumors on the net say that if this movie goes over well enough, it could set up a new show by the same name, funded by the scifi channel. Which I think would just be...incredible! My guess from the looks of the trailer, that the show would be like a blend of Babylon 5 and Andromeda as far as storyline and adventure goes.
2001-12-06 11:32:54-07

Yanthor: I love the open slap at Star Trek in the trailer!

Jäger: I have a feeling it looks better on the One False Browser.
2001-12-06 19:34:37-07

Humblik: Think I'll mention here that I only have one final and I'm done.
2001-12-07 00:30:25-07

Linknoid: Is project Freetrade dead?
2001-12-07 13:09:20-07

Linknoid: I've been thinking about it again, and I'd like to work on it, but a couple things about it are intimidating. One, I don't understand threading enough to do anything with it
2001-12-07 13:11:44-07

Linknoid: Two, I would rather it be under a more flexible license than GPL. I don't have anything against it being GPLed, except that makes it too restrictive on what can be done with the code
2001-12-07 13:13:29-07

Linknoid: Therefore, I'm somewhat tempted to take the little code I've written (universe generation and path finding) and create my own version (which features of can be merged into the original if so desired). But if work on the original picks up, I'll look past the problems I have with it and work on it instead.
2001-12-07 13:18:12-07

Linknoid: Is anyone else interested in continued work on the original, or is it dead?
2001-12-07 13:19:20-07

scott: first @home, now kenkinder.com... why? why? oh the anguish!
2001-12-07 13:55:17-07

scott: im glad the broadband died for awhile; maybe fat americans will go outside
2001-12-07 13:57:34-07

Jäger queries what linknoid's prefered licence would be
2001-12-07 16:29:37-07

Bitscape: scott: didn't work in my case. I just stayed inside all day and played gamecube instead of surfing the net. ;)
2001-12-07 17:30:25-07

Linknoid personally puts most everything he does in public domain, but BSD would seem to be acceptable
2001-12-07 18:16:23-07

Linknoid: but I realize that other people would rather have their code more protected than what either of those afford, and that doesn't bother me at all
2001-12-07 18:17:17-07

bse: hrmm, so i'm here in america, and i want to get me a swish new x86 peecee.. any recommendations on good/inexpensive component suppliers?

Bitscape: lol
2001-12-17 18:32:58-07

Jäger: Must be a Microsoft SQL product.
2001-12-17 20:56:15-07

Jäger: This is funny: [dancingbush.com] (Flash)
2001-12-18 12:44:05-07

Jäger: (stupid, maybe, but amusing.)
2001-12-18 14:48:32-07

Shadowkiller: Fans of B5: If you want to see the whole series come out, BUY this disc. It may be tough to find at retailers, but keep searching until you do. Help save the universe. [dvd.ign.com]
2001-12-18 16:53:58-07

Bitscape: Is there anything more disturbing than the thought of two hynerians mating?
2001-12-18 18:33:04-07

Jäger: Not that I can think of.
2001-12-18 21:28:56-07

Humblik: Discovery Channel?
2001-12-19 01:42:16-07

Humblik: Ahh, now I understand why Yanthor sent me that email. The quotes make much more sense now.

jäger heads off to enqueue himself
2001-12-19 13:51:52-07

Shadowkiller: Joss Whedon interviewed by the onion. [www.theonionavclub.com]
2001-12-19 16:40:23-07

Bitscape: Joss Whedon is a television genius!
2001-12-19 18:56:26-07

Bitscape thinks there should be a Final Fantasy Final. The phrase has a certain ring to it.
2001-12-19 18:59:28-07

Jäger returns from Fellowship of the Ring

Bitscape: Public Service Announcement: If you care about getting something that lasts, do NOT buy it from Sony. Especially dvd and cd players.
2001-12-20 20:32:36-07

Yanthor: Interesting, my experience with Sony has been exactly the opposite. My Sony CD/Tape/Radio boombox is as good as ever after 6 years, Mini speakers I've had for 9 years are great, and my Walkman from 8th grade is immortal...
2001-12-21 12:13:01-07

Yanthor: Oh yeah, and my Sony CD burner is superb.
2001-12-21 12:13:29-07

Yanthor: Oh, and our Sony 27" TV has the best sound, sharpest picture, and looks the best of anything we could find. So far it's running great.
2001-12-21 12:14:28-07

Shadowkiller: Perhaps not all products produced under the Sony brand name are created equal.
2001-12-21 13:36:03-07

Humblik: Wow, I think I am just now starting to recover from going to fotr. I'm definitely going to be watching it another three or four times while it's in the theater.
2001-12-22 03:35:41-07

Humblik: I thinking I should be going to bed, but I've forgotten what sleep is so I'll go add some content.
2001-12-22 03:37:10-07

Humblik: Hmm, I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface of what I'd like to say about FotR, but sleep calls and I'm thinking its better to sleep at home than while driving.
2001-12-22 04:53:22-07

Bitscape: If you're using the latest mozilla (0.9.7), check out the DOM inspector. Tasks: Tools: DOM Inspector. It dynamically updates when Javascript updates the document structure!

Bitscape: For the holiday season, I found this hilarious. It's a wonderful life! [www.salon.com]

Linknoid: Hmm, a quick search of Jägerfesting for Press Release gives the following cross reference (as I expected): [jaeger.festing.org]
2001-12-23 17:41:16-07

Linknoid speculates as to the nature of Press Release II (but keeps his speculations to himself).
2001-12-23 17:42:44-07

Jäger: :)
2001-12-23 18:58:42-07

Bitscape also has suspicions, but will say nothing further at this time.

Linknoid agrees with Bitscape's last comment
2001-12-24 16:54:11-07

Linknoid: Oh no, she's marrying a giant stuffed penguin?!? ;-)
2001-12-26 16:53:25-07

Bitscape: Here in Colorado, we had a sunny, blue-skied Christmas. No white at all, but it was still fun.
2001-12-26 23:43:02-07

Kiesa: bouncing, it'd need to be kiesaandjaeger.com Otherwise it's not symmetric.
2001-12-27 09:05:41-07

bouncing: "I'm dreaming of a blue screen. Just like the kind I used to know." -- An NT Christmas...

bouncing notes that jaeger's CS interface caches, so when you enter content you have to hit reload to notice.
2001-12-27 09:07:25-07

Bitscape concludes that there must be something about Ridley Scott's directing that sometimes (but not always) makes him oblivious to what everybody else considers the greatest moments on film.
2001-12-30 03:52:26-07

Jäger checks in from Sacramento
2001-12-30 21:14:50-07

Bitscape: Jaeger, the travelling man.

2001-12-31 01:04:20-07

Humblik feels a bit behind.
2001-12-31 01:04:33-07

Bitscape: Are open source advocates mentally healthy? Is billg retarded? I can't tell if this guy is actually serious, or a really clever comedian. Either way, entertaining reading. [members.aol.com]
