Disclaimer: During of the viewing of this movie, a significant amount of my CPU time was being diverted to another process. Hence, this entire review should be taken with a heavy grain of salt.
Oh yes. After this movie, my general impression: Wow, I never know war could be such a blast! Oh sure, there were many sad and cruel moments, all of which were cleverly designed to draw the audience into becoming sympathetic toward our lead characters. Such crass emotional manipulation. We should be angry, now, shouldn't we? But alas, the ploy worked. :)
As far as plots go, this one is pretty much the standard cookie cutter Hollywood fare. No big surprises, or twists which haven't been done a thousand times before in other movies. Oh, it's well executed, mind you. The acting is top notch. The production is certainly up to standards. The timing, the humor... I laughed, especially toward the end.
So anyway, I guess this movie did do its job: Although sporadically, it did get my mind off my own problems for a while. Told a very heart warming story, from the depths of hopelessness, to the heights of victory. There were battles, there was romance, there were underdogs who came through in the end. And of course, we kicked the Brits' asses. (No offense intended to any certain readers who might be tuning in from that region. ;)
Yeah, not a bad movie. Nothing ground-breaking either. I give it... 3 Stars.
