Midday jaunt

At first, I was a bit dubious about how much ground I'd cover today. But now, I'm glad I took the journey.
Part of my doubt came from the fact that last week, Serenity's rear gear shifting mechanism suffered a partial breakdown. Something in the handlebar controls snapped, and it no longer snaps from gear to gear as it once did. Also, it tends to slide back to high gear if left alone. I tinkered with it for a while, but I suspect this one may be beyond my ability to repair. Maybe I'll tinker with it more later.
Still, this morning, my eagerness to get out for some fresh air trumped my sluggish inclinations, and I went out for a ride despite the imperfect condition of my vehicle. (Add to that the fact that last night, I had committed to mail a peerflix movie away within 24 hours.)
It was a perfect day for riding. I found a public mailbox easily enough (the same one I had used last time, although I'm not certain it's the closest to here), and then decided to keep going. The gear problem wasn't annoying me that much, and I found that I could still exert some vague control over the rear gears, and everything else could either be done by switching ranges or just using my muscles to pedal like a madman.
Before I knew it, I was riding through Peter Pan Park (the true center of Lincoln if you ask me).
Downtown. Back at the bookstore, where my favorite clerk, friendly as ever, was hanging out, as was the little black and white cat -- whose job, it seems, is to look up and greet people at the door. I wandered around, mostly browsing the scifi/fantasy section.
I contemplated what I wanted to read. No Philip K Dick in stock. Doh. They did have a fair number of David Brin books though. I remembered how much I enjoyed both of the other books I've read by him. I contemplated The Postman, since I haven't read it yet, but I figure I can borrow that one from Yanthor, so buying it seems a bit silly at this point. I decided to get another one that looked interesting from the cover jacket. Earth. Looks like a good read.
From there, since I was already in the vicinity, I decided to venture south to Open Harvest so I could replinish my stash of yummies. Some say you shouldn't go grocery shopping when you're hungry. I disagree because hunger makes it so much more fun, though my wallet conflicts with me on this issue.
When I walked in the door, I was greeted by "G", who seemed disappointed to recall that my volunteer day isn't until Wednesday. (The past couple times I've volunteered, she and others have had trouble finding enough stuff for me to do. She said that on this particular day, there's an abundance of things they need help with. I replied that if only I didn't have to be at work this afternoon, I'd love to. (Cause honestly, sweeping the dock over and over does start to get old after a while.) Oh well. That's how it goes.)
Anyway, got my yummies, munched spinach, came back to base, showered. And since my shift starts in T minus 7 minutes, I must end this. Howdy ho.
