Today, I've been updating my creditors, would-be creditors, bank, auto insurance, and other such entities with my new address. Also, after thinking it through for several days, I went ahead and called Cingular to have my cell phone account canceled.

It just isn't worth it to keep throwing away $35 a month for a device that brings almost as much hassle and annoyance as it does convenience. If people need to contact me, the landline number here will do just fine.

I've already agreed to reimburse Yanthor and Anya for any long distance charges that I might incur by calling people in Colorado. Based on my usage patterns, that should still be far less than the cell phone bill, and a hell of a lot less than the roaming charges I get whenever I use it outside Colorado.

(Yes, I probably could have changed my home calling area to Lincoln, but then I'm back to paying long distance to call home anyway. Forget it.)

This feels good.

Another thing I need to do is get Tobias registered in the state of Nebraska. I called Progressive today (since their web form puked out on me when I tried to update my address), and they said I'd need to get a Nebraska registration before the next insurance term begins on July 10.

I also contemplated just selling my car. It's an idea I've been entertaining at the back of my mind for a while now. Here in not-quite-suburban Lincoln, it's even more feasible to walk or ride my bike everywhere, especially under my present employment situation. I haven't driven Tobias at all in over a week.

But I'm not quite ready to take that leap yet. I'd still like to have the car around for occassional use, and to make big trips. Also, Progressive's web site revealed that if I had stayed at my previous address, my renewal rate would have been a couple hundred bucks lower than it was six months ago. I don't know whether moving to Lincoln will make that go up or down (hopefully down), but cheaper insurance definitely makes keeping the car around more attractive.

I have another easy 4-hour shift this afternoon. Then two days off completely! But Friday-Sunday, I'll practically be living at that gas station. This is the new pattern.

Progressive Insurance

I also use Progressive Insurance. I don't do much driving, I put down about 4000 miles a year, I probably do less than that, but I figured I'd be on the safe side. The reason they don't handle state switches through the web is because each state has different laws, so they want a human to redo the contract. I started in California, about $350 for 6 months, then I moved to Tennessee where it was about $180 for 6 months, then Lincoln where it was about $200 for 6 months. It's not too hard to switch, you just need to call them up in person. I might suspect that based on cost of living and such, Nebraska might be a bit cheaper than Colorado, but I don't know enough about Colorado to say for sure.

Also, a good option for long distance phone service is to just pick up a cheap prepaid calling card. I have one that I would use except that Humblik gets free long distance after a certain time, so I pretty much never have to worry about charges, especially considering how little I use the phone. But that way you guys don't have to worry about sorting through the phone bill figuring out whose calls are whose.
