Sluggishly ambling toward preparation

Sat Sep 25 19:52:43 MDT 2004

Watched the idiot box for a while today. Slept a lot. Read.

Having realized that if I'm going to see the people in Laramie, I'd better find a way to get in touch with them soon (a message to the one email address I had got no responses), I made a trip over to the Ranch to see if I could find the person who purportedly had contact info of the Wyoming contingent.

I also took the opportunity to deliver a large box of recently acquired fresh bell peppers to the community. (I've gotten into the routine of passing excess dumpstered goods off to the Ranch. I have been dumpstering more than enough food to easily feed myself for many weeks now, and regularly find that I have large quantities off food that I could never finish on my own.)

This is another thing I love about the Circle A Ranch. The people there don't react as if you're an alien from outer space when you tell them tales of dumpstered goodies. Instead, a much more common response: "Wow, which one did you find that?"

Then they'll offer to share some of their dumpstered cake and ice cream, and everyone can trade tales about which dumpsters around town have yielded the luckiest results. With that group, there is no need to hide.

Tonight's visit was more of a surgical strike. After leaving the peppers with the first person I ran into, they informed me that the individual I was looking for was indeed around this time. It didn't take me long to locate him, and he provided me with a phone number through which the Wyoming contingent can be reached. After that, I made a prompt exit.

I'm still not certain as to what my exact plans are, or what day I'm going to depart, but at least now I have a good starting point to get in touch with the Laramie folks.

As I neared home, it occurred to me that my immediately edible food supply was virtually gone, so I decided to stop by 7-11. After a bit of digging there, I found what is easily my largest find from that dumpster to date. A box (not a carton, but a large multi-pound BOX) filled with Grade A large eggs. And of course, after a bit of persistence, I also got what I came looking for: The Homer Simpson Deluxe Special.

I should have visited 7-11 first! Now I have another massive surplus that I'm never going to finish by myself.

Well, maybe I'll find another occassion to visit the Ranch in the next day or two. One never knows.

At this point, I want to get back to the cell phone I left charging, so I can call $mentor[0] to arrange details on hiking tomorrow, for one last time before the big trip. I want to call him before he goes to bed, so I'd better get going.

I'm still contemplating how (or if) I'm going to smuggle the entire box of eggs and huge bag of donuts and other yummies past mom. But these are minor logistical details. (This is yet another reason why the "living with parents" model is now well past obsolete for me. But we're working on getting beyond that. Truly.)
