Continuing in the tradition of creating a charming new fairy tale while poking fun at the old ones, this movie is a highly enjoyable romp as Shrek and Fiona journey to a land Far Far Away to meet the parents. Very funny. It lives up to the original.

II

Kiesa and I saw Shrek II the Sunday after it opened in a theater packed mostly with families with small children, although they didn't make nearly as much noise as I might have expected. I got the feeling that I would have enjoyed it more had I seen Shrek more recently. I remembered who Shrek and Princess Fiona were, and the movie gave me enough background that I didn't really need to remember them at all, but the supporting charcters (the big bad wolf, the gingerbread man) were used without reminding me who they were in the first movie and how they came to be friends with Shrek and Fiona.

Luckily, I got to see a late night showing at a theater with exactly zero minors in attendance.

The Gingerbread man was the one being tortured by Lord Farquaad in the original Shrek.

"Have you seen the muffin man?"

"The muffin man?"

"The muffin man!"

As for the big bad wolf, I think I need to watch the original again too...
