This time, I take full responsibility. I pressed the button, and I wasn't even following orders. Well, not directly at least. I was given a mandate, and I evaluated possible alternative ways to carry out that mandate. I chose the option that I believed would be the the least painful overall while still achieving the goal, and took the steps necessary to carry it out.
During these steps, multiple things on the server broke. A few non-critical items are still broken, and in need of attention. (Namely, some stuff on sites that probably won't be visited for a while anyway.)
In my defense, I will point out that I did request several hours of officially scheduled downtime, to which the reply was, "Just do whatever you need to do after 5pm today."
I maintain that the method I chose was the best course of action, for both the short and long term.
Well, several hours later, and all known vital services appear to up and working again.
Also, on a satisfying note, the goal of this sub-mission -- the primary reason this particular bout of insanity began in the first place -- has also been achieved. (Note the "s" in the url.)
I think I shall now take a break and watch Angel.
