The chill of winter

Friday, October 31, 2003 01:54

It's started to get really cold here for the first time this season. Layers of ice on the windshield. News about bad roads in the mountains. The feeling of winter. My feet are cold.

Tonight, I journied to Boulder, where I attended the Shambhala Buddhism class. (Always public, but never static, except when you're still in sitting meditation, but even then, each participant is a separate instance; oh nevermind.)

We validate again

Saturday, October 18, 2003 22:27

Well, after some mussing around with all the goop I've been adding and changing, I managed to get this site to again pass w3c validation, at least on a cursory level. (i.e. I checked the main site, plus a couple of random ramblings (haha, bad pun), but not every page that might ever appear.)

Kill Bill: Volume 1 (****)

Sunday, October 12, 2003 23:11

Most of the media attention so far has focused on what an outrageously violent movie this is. While, yes, it is gory, and there are lots of severed limbs, squirting firehose blood, and creative maimings and killings, this movie is not what I would consider a disturbing one.

I'm glad I went

Saturday, October 11, 2003 03:35

Well, after that little abortion of a rambling I typed here earlier, I made haste out the door, jumped in the car, and headed in the direction of downtown Denver. The traffic was worse than I had hoped, I hit lots of red lights, and got unlucky with finding a parking spot quickly. By the time I had parked several blocks away, it was 22:10. So much for getting in before the no cover cutoff.

Mid-rambling change of mind (was: Little Amsterdam)

Friday, October 10, 2003 21:29

I was thinking about going clubbing this evening, but ultimately didn't. The deciding factor ended up being my foot. I went lovely twilight jog, which was great in every regard, except that somehow, I ended up with a big nasty blister on the bottom of my right sole. It makes it hurt to walk, much less dance. And what's the fun of going to a club if you can't dance? (I'm not the type to go and do nothing but sit and drink beer the whole evening.)

Logins. Fun. Did most of the coding last night. Added bits of polish, and a few little features tonight. (Gotta give people some reason to use it, right?) More to be done. Like user profiles, nested comments, and other stuff. I think the UI could still use a few tweaks too.

Honey from the icy shed on a cold winter day

Friday, October 3, 2003 02:00

Well, despite the overall lack of content about it here so far, Megafest 2.1 happened more or less as planned. Yanthor, Anya, Humblik, Nemo, Jaeger, Kiesa, and I were the participants. It was excellent and fun, and there will be content from me about it. But first, I wanted to crank out the final chapter of the wedding epic while I was still feeling at least somewhat inspired to do so.

2003-10-03 12:07:21

bouncing finds that the SDA views on the media and music are similar to the Puritan views on books and culture (fiction = lies, etc). The problem it seems to me is, a trendency to generalize the people behind music as being more of some kind of force and not as people.
2003-10-04 12:52:30

bouncing: People are people and some are different than others. I find the lyrics of eminem tasteless as the next guy, but you have to understand that music is as much an expression for him as a message. He writes what he thinks and feels -- for that, no one should critisize him. To reduce every work of art, every artist behind it, and every artistic community as being part of one grand conspiracy with a sole "agenda" seems schizophrenic to me.
2003-10-04 12:59:10

bouncing: BTW, Imagine is one of my favorite songs. Beautiful in its meaning and simplicity.
2003-10-04 13:02:51

Bitscape: bouncing, perhaps that's one reason why many of us have drifted away and/or renounced the adventist religion.
2003-10-04 14:03:15

Bitscape: But if one believes things were so much better back in the "good old days", and the direction the world is taking puts it on its way straight to hell, then the devil makes a convenient, if unprovable, explanation, because it's not really disprovable either.
2003-10-04 14:12:48

Bitscape: Though there is a lot of shit that's wrong in the world, some worse and some better than before, I like to (try to) have a more positive outlook.
2003-10-04 14:14:56

Bitscape: I'm sure if Nemo is around and reading this, he would have some insightful point to add in support of his religion, as I have found him to be a very good thinker, even though he and I disagree on this subject.
2003-10-04 14:22:35

bouncing: I don't romantisize the past or the future. Was crime lower in the 50s? Yes, perhaps. Were murders against black people counted as crime in the 50s? Not in the South. :) On the future's side, I see a lot of progressiveness in my generation sometimes, but I also see a lot of apathy. Ironically, in defending the crimes of the past (seggregation, native American genocide, etc -- conservatives seem to take somewhat of a stance of moral relativism. :)
2003-10-04 16:50:56

bouncing: ie; "Well, these were great leaders. You just have to understand, in the culture of time time, racism was pretty standard so they were good compared to their society" -- moral relativism. In fact, without moral relativism, there could be no defense of the Founding Fathers. But I find it extremely ironic that such a philosophy is fervently critisized by the right, then used to defend sins of the past.
2003-10-04 16:53:01

Bitscape: Where do we draw the line between "art" and "propaganda" in the mass media? If six megacorporations own all the major media outlets, then the argument that whoever runs those companies holds major influence over public perception gains credibility. If you're a highly religious person, it's not too hard to make the leap that "the devil" might be behind some of the bastards at Time Warner and Fox.
2003-10-05 16:42:25

Bitscape: It's not an argument that I buy, but I can see where it comes from, especially when there's also a lot of liberals saying the same thing, albeit without the "devil" part.
2003-10-05 16:44:26

bouncing: That's just calling greed for what it is.

Yanthor: Seems like I hear you guys saying that a lot about Debian updates. Ok, I can think of four instances for sure between both of you. Has it been enough to annoy either of you? (Bitscape and Jaeger)
2003-10-08 09:52:09

Bitscape: Occassionally, debian updates have caused things to break for me, and require manual intervention. (Postgres, and certain perl libs comes to mind.) Overall, I would consider it a huge timesaver when compared with manually updating everything.
2003-10-08 10:41:25

Bitscape: It also depends a lot on which branch you use. The stable branch is rock solid, and generally only changes things for critical security updates. The testing branch rarely breaks. If you run unstable... well... you're name just might be Jaeger. :)
2003-10-08 10:43:55

Jäger: This is actually the second thing unstable broke for me this week; the first was that mod_perl needed to be compiled against the latest Perl, but hadn't yet.
2003-10-08 12:04:48

Jäger: Upon identifying the problem, I was able to recompile the package myself, which was actually quite easy.

2003-10-21 15:44:21

2003-10-24 12:57:08

Jäger: w3m is a text-mode browser that beats Lynx into little bitty pieces
2003-10-24 13:09:45

Jäger: (I'd be happy with alt tags in your images. Which, last I checked, are required in one or more recent html specs.)
2003-10-24 13:10:12

Jäger: ... of course, I can understand not wanting to bloat your html any more than it already is.
2003-10-24 19:58:37

2003-10-26 08:03:51

bouncing: (I'd complain about the way jaeger's looks in mozilla and every-other-browser, but I last I checked, Jaeger didn't care.)
2003-10-26 12:24:03

bouncing: Bitscape: We should all be as scottgalvin.com and have a website that renders no content on ANY browser.
2003-10-26 12:24:55

Bitscape: Now THAT's an idea!
2003-10-27 16:21:24

Yanthor: Jaeger: I don't have any important images on yanthor.net now. The only image that is used is a one pixel spacer graphic that is used because it is an "oldie but goodie" way of aligning things perfectly in a webpage on a pixel level that works with all browsers including Netscape 4 and NetPositive. Stylesheets is the new way to achieve the same result, and I'll implement them sometime. So I changed the ALT tag for the one pixel images to empty so it doesn't clutter Lynx view. Everything else is ALL text and table based. So what other images were you talking about?
2003-10-27 16:29:41

Yanthor: I haven't had any images on Yanthor.net other than the spacer image for months.
