I finally got around to watching Dune in its entirity
today. Having watched the scifi channel's version just
over 6 months ago, comparisons are inevitable.
Strong points of Lynch's 1984 version: Music. Loved
the theme music. What a great score. The visuals were
also very good (especially considering that this was
1984). I liked the epic battle scene at the end.
Weak points: The narrative felt very abbreviated. I
supposed that's inevitable after having watched the 4.5
hour Scifi version. Despite this, some parts felt
slow-moving anyway. Irratic pacing, I suppose. Wierd.
I also didn't feel nearly as much empathy for the
characters in this one. In this case, I would
attribute that more to the writing than the acting.
Overall, I think I enjoyed the scifi version more.
It "felt" more epic in scope, even though it
was on a tv budget. Lynch's version was good too
though.
