Today, Bitscape has definitely blown his DVD budget for the month. No question. After work, I made a semi-surgical strike to Best Buy. Two very important releases, and I bought both.
First and foremost. The complete Season 1 of the very very bestest (because I said so) Star Trek ever. TNG. Done in style. 7 discs, packaged up in in a silver book-like encasement, with a foldout plastic ala X Files inside. First thing I did upon entering the Castle Lair was tear open the package, pop in disc 1, and Engage. Love the menus! Total lcars. They got the look.
I watched Encounter At Farpoint, followed by The Naked Now. Never before has TNG looked so crisp and clean. And the remixed 5.1 audio when the Enterprise goes into warp, while the theme music hits a crescendo... It's enough to bring a tear to my eye. :)
I love TNG. Some of the lines may be cheesy and obvious, but it's just pure joy to watch. Picard, Data, Riker, Troi, Geordi, all of them (yes, even Wesley)... I just love that show. It's been so long since I had last seen an episode, that I had forgotton how great it was. Almost feels like I'm 12 years old again.
Wierdly, I had a dream about the TNG release this morning. I didn't chronicle it at the time, but I have no doubt it served as a strong reminder to stop at the store. (Maybe Futurama isn't so far off after all.)
I was grocery shopping in Safeway. Then I noticed it on one of the shelves. TNG Season 1 was out on DVD. In fact, it was on all the shelves, between the chips, the soda, the beans. Everywhere! I wanted to get a copy. This had been the first great non-cartoon television show that I really really loved. And now it was out on DVD. Thousands of copies everywhere. All I had to do was pick one up and take it to the checkout stand. Yea!
No, I am not joking. I almost wish I were, because it's so... ridiculous. But it's true. That is the dream I had before I woke up this morning. lol.
About to cut this rambling and switch gears. Because I need to watch the other must-buy DVD release that came out today. Xena: Warrior Princess Series Finale, Director's Cut. Reportedly, it includes lots of stuff that had to be cut out due to time constraints, so the story makes more sense than the version that was aired. (We'll see.)
Also included: 30 minutes of behind the scenes footage, plus a commentary track with Tapert, Lucy, and Renee. So getting this one was pretty much a no brainer. (But I still would like to see complete Xena season releases, ala X Files, Sopranos, Buffy, and now TNG.)
That's it. Can't wait anymore. Must put this disc in the player. Signing off.
