Anybody else remember those cheesy ads from way back, like over a decade ago? If so, you can probably guess where I went on the way home from work today.

Meanwhile, back at the lair...

Thursday, November 29, 2001 22:04

I've spent the past 3 nights being more or less a couch potato. Tuesday was Buffy night, of course. A very entertainingly wacky episode, featuring the dual plotlines of Buffy and Spike's newfound "relationship" (Salon had a great article about it), and of course, Willow's descent into the addictive world of black magic and the tragic effects thereof. Nooooooo, not Willow. Anyone but Willow!

And now, a first look back. Again.

Tuesday, November 27, 2001 18:56

As my vacation draws to a close, it is time to take a look back at the events of the past week and a half, but always with an eye toward the future which lies ahead. It is at times like these that we must somberly reflect on the true meaning of life, the essence of these moments, and look for guidance from the Great Penguin who lives within all of us.

Bitscape joins the dark side

Tuesday, November 27, 2001 05:50

After much inspiration of the Mountain Dew incited variety, a few hours of gimping, and a night of retrofitting code (read: ugly hack upon ugly hack), the new cover page is online. Some may love it. Others may hate it. I personally think it's pretty slick. And if you're still a stone age Netscape 4.x user, you probably don't even know what any of this fuss is about.

Lounging in the Lair

Sunday, November 25, 2001 04:04

Or is it lairing in the Lounge? Lounging at the outpost? Castling from the Compound? (That almost sounds like a chess game or something.) Memoiring in the hideout? Oh, nevermind.

Requiem for a Dream (****)

Saturday, November 24, 2001 04:37

I once read a review which stated that this film would only hold appeal for two types of people: Aspiring film students, and emotional masochists. Which category do I fall into? Another review (I think it was actually reprinted on the insert) stated that if America really wants to get serious about keeping kids away from drugs, then this film should be required viewing for all high school students.

Feast Fest 2001 Official Announcement

Thursday, November 22, 2001 13:39

All festers are invited to attend Feast Fest 2001 at Bitscape's Castle Lair. The Lair will be ready to begin receiving festers whenever Bitscape returns from Thanksgiving dinner, probably between 1900 and 2100. An announcement will be posted to Content Solutions when the definite time is determined.

Free your mind

Tuesday, November 20, 2001 17:14

Predictably, I slept in this morning. Immediately upon getting out of bed at around 0930, on an impluse, I experimented with some impromptu adjustments to the collective's map code, which had nothing to do with the planned "Phase 2 Enhancements", but I liked them so much that I'm going to include them anyway. Depending on how things go, I'll likely be ready to commit and ship Phase 2 either late tonight or tomorrow.

Vacation of the night owl

Tuesday, November 20, 2001 02:22

Monday, the first day that involves actually taking time off from work. Monday morning, I figured out why my 2.4 boot floppy had absolutely refused to work no matter how many tricks I tried or how diligently I followed the HOWTO instructions. To save time, I had been using an image from one of the newer Debian kernel packages, thinking I would build my own later. When I looked a little closer, I finally realized the mistake: The image I had been using had no IDE drivers whatsoever. Doh!

Dagobah Lives Again!

Sunday, November 18, 2001 01:28

Right now, I, Bitscape, am sitting in the living room at the console of Dagobah, the ancient K5-133 with the spray painted case, the LED on the front which reads "1011", and a fresh new 40 gig hard drive. Much needs to be done before everything will be tailored to my liking, but this is definitely a start.

Sanity prevails

Friday, November 16, 2001 19:01

Having been tempted by the haunting call of new hardware all day today, I arrived home from work with one resolution: Pay ALL the bills first (at least the ones that have arrived so far), even if I know that there will be enough money to spare. Then, look at the balance in the magical gnucash machine, and decide upon a course of action.

PC hardware on the brain

Mulholland Drive (****)

Saturday, November 10, 2001 02:44

Yes, I admit it. I am crazy. A lunatic. A madman. This being the third viewing, I have probably spent more money seeing this movie in theaters than it will cost to buy the dvd. But you see, I had to watch it again. After reading more stuff about it, plus that Ebert article Shadowkiller linked on Content Solutions, I just had to. The movie where finding out who matches up with what identity is not readily obvious. Besides, I needed to test the theory I put forth in my last log entry to see if such an interpretation would hold up consistently.

November begins

Friday, November 2, 2001 20:21

With each passing day, this set of rooms which I occupy feels more and more like "home". Now begins the first weekend spent here in the Castle Lair (official title: "Bitscape's Castle Lair") during which I don't have to worry about going back to the Louisville Compound to clean up trash, pack or unpack large volumes of crap, or wade through masses of junk on the floor just to get to my bed.

I am TOS alien couch potato almighty!

Thursday, November 1, 2001 00:08

So this morning I got up and donned what must have passed for a Halloween costume. After a good smothering of thickly caked face paint makeup purchased at Wal Mart the night before, I looked at myself in the mirror, and decided I resembled something from TOS. I couldn't decide on exactly what, but definitely the spirit of TOS.

Linknoid agrees
2001-11-16 13:56:03-07

Yanthor: I think the point IS to detect MUCH of Kirk in Archer. They are trying to return Star Trek to its roots. Its roots were showing space as more of a "Wild West" instead of a sterile playground where everyone played by the rules and somehow everything
2001-11-16 16:39:31-07

Yanthor: turns out right (Read: Voyager!)
2001-11-16 16:39:58-07

2001-11-18 17:54:46-07

Jäger: So therefore meeting at 2100 CST (the standard time) would be fine.
2001-11-18 21:38:52-07

Bitscape: So should I take this to mean that we _are_ having mass irc this week at the usual time? (Not that it's of great consequence, because at least one or two people typically show up regardless of what is announced anyway...)
2001-11-18 23:35:00-07

Drizzt: wants to know if anyone can tell him a little about the "Ancients" in Farscape.
2001-11-19 09:35:36-07

Drizzt: in a recent episode i watched from my archives reference was made that the ancients had touched chrichton. i don't remember much if anything being said about them before that episode.
2001-11-19 09:38:19-07

Drizzt: i am assuming they are some higher power, do we know how or why or is that something i will find out later.
2001-11-19 09:39:20-07

Drizzt: i believe the episode was called 'the locket' and delt with john and aeryn groing old becuase they existed in normal time
2001-11-19 09:45:16-07

Drizzt: anyway, if anyone can give me just a few details about the anceints or tell be if it is something i'll find out later. i feel like i have forgotten something or missed something in an earlier epidsode
2001-11-19 09:46:21-07

Yanthor: Season 1, episode 16: "A Human Reaction"
2001-11-19 10:11:59-07

Yanthor: Creighton doesn't know it at the time, but they give him the subconscious wormhole technology to help him get home. This information slowly comes out in later episodes. The race is never refered to in the episode as "the ancients" but they are later.
2001-11-19 10:13:17-07

Yanthor: They reappear in season 3
2001-11-19 10:13:32-07

Drizzt: thanks for the info, maybe a bit too much but that's ok. i remember that episode and actually i did assume it had something to do with that
2001-11-19 13:23:55-07

Drizzt: however, i always thought that the wormhole technology was inadvertantly discovered by chrichton's original farscape project.
2001-11-19 13:25:03-07

Drizzt: hence his projection into a distant part of space. i assume all that you have told me will be explained in future episodes however i still have some questions
2001-11-19 13:28:28-07

Drizzt: 1) chrichtion did or did not have any wormhole knowledge before the episode "a human reaction"
2001-11-19 13:29:31-07

Drizzt: if he did not then does he realize he never did, or does it seem to him that he has always had the knowlege
2001-11-19 13:30:24-07

Drizzt: actually i better just stop asking questions and find out for myself. the more questions i ask the more pop into my head about za'an and scorpious, ect... all pertaining to john's knowledge. anyway thanks again, i'll pay closer attention.
2001-11-19 13:32:39-07

Linknoid: The farscape actually encountered a wormhole that already existed, which is what sent him across the galaxy
2001-11-19 17:29:15-07

Linknoid: He wasn't even sure it was a wormhole, but that was the only thing he could figure out that it could be
2001-11-19 17:29:55-07

Linknoid: The only reason he cared about the knowledge was so that he could get back home, but he had no clue how to go about creating a wormhole or finding one
2001-11-19 17:31:04-07

Linknoid: Before his encounter with the ancients, all he had was a theory that he had come through the wormhole, but something happens in that encounter (which is discussed later on)
2001-11-19 17:33:42-07

Linknoid: hope that clears up your questions
2001-11-19 17:34:27-07

Jäger: Drizzt: how much farscape have you seen?
2001-11-19 23:28:43-07

Drizzt: almost done with season two
2001-11-20 05:40:55-07

Drizzt: i think there are six more episodes left
2001-11-20 05:42:47-07

Drizzt: natasha actually likes it as much as I do.
2001-11-20 05:43:48-07

Drizzt: it's great because we both can go ooohh, and aaaahhh at the same time and it isn't just me being geeky.
2001-11-20 05:44:39-07

Drizzt: Farscape has converted her!!!!
2001-11-20 05:45:07-07

Drizzt: (not really i suppose, but its a start)
2001-11-20 05:45:30-07

Yanthor: I am surprised at the amount that Anya likes it. Andromeda is still Anya's favorite show, but Farscape comes in second for her. For me it's a tie right now. I think she enjoys Enterprise more than me. That's great that Farscape has converted Natasha!

Yanthor: Actually, if you've seen almost all of season two, then we're not ruining anything. The reason scorpious put the chip in John's head, is this: when John was in his Aurora chair, Scorpious spotted the wormhole tech and it was a surprise to John as well.
2001-11-20 09:17:09-07

Yanthor: However, the information was implanted in the subconscious, and made to block all attempts at retrieving it. THAT is why Scorpious put the chip in John's head, to beat away at the blocks and retrieve the information over time.
2001-11-20 09:18:30-07

Jäger: Kiesa likes Farscape, too.
2001-11-20 09:20:50-07

Yanthor: So to answer your question #1, I agree with Linknoid. John didn't know what he hit back at earth. He has no idea where, or WHEN he is. The Ancients were actually quite kind and enlightened--giving him significant help in getting home, knowing it was a
2001-11-20 09:21:01-07

Yanthor: --I mean, knowing he was just one person. Most races wouldn't care, but they did care enough to help him. I liked that because it actually is kinder than what he's seen most races do.
2001-11-20 09:22:37-07

Yanthor: Jäger: cool, I'm glad she does! :-)
2001-11-20 09:24:20-07

Yanthor: OOOH! I should point out that over the weekend I had the most fun I've had in a LONG time! To facilitate Linknoid, Humblik and I being able to play Starcraft together, Chiana is now a battle.net server!
2001-11-20 10:53:33-07

Yanthor: It's creepy to be the ONLY 2 or 3 people on all of (our) Battle.net!
2001-11-20 10:54:16-07

Drizzt: yanthor, i'm not entirely sure who you are but i am 98.9992345789% sure. thanks for the info. i have actually stopped watching andromeda
2001-11-20 12:26:45-07

Drizzt: i'm trying to keep the number of shows i watch to a reasonable level. i must say that i am extremely impressed with the WB's Smallville
2001-11-20 12:28:14-07

Drizzt: i'm beginning to have mixed feelings about enterprise. i really like the pilot and the second episode (i think) but no it is starting to feel like typical star trek happy bee-bop stuff. i guess we'll see where it goes by the end of the season.
2001-11-20 12:30:10-07

Yanthor: I used to be Neelix. Anya is she who used to be my wife. You're watching Enterprise over Andromeda? For me it would be a no-brainer. I'd choose Andromeda in a heartbeat.
2001-11-20 12:55:22-07

Yanthor: Great Quote: "I'm cancelling all social occassions in November and scheduling carpal tunnel surgery for January." anonymous poster on Amazon.com, referring to Civilization III.
2001-11-20 12:55:39-07

Yanthor is embarrased
2001-11-20 12:56:46-07

Yanthor: I mean, Anya is she who IS my wife.
2001-11-20 12:57:26-07

Yanthor attempts to stop really bad rumors before they start
2001-11-20 12:57:47-07

Bitscape: You had me wondering there for a moment. ;-)
2001-11-20 15:26:23-07

Drizzt: i think you had all of us wondering.
2001-11-21 05:56:36-07

Drizzt: as far as Andromeda and Enterprise go, neither one rates very high with me. i would say andromed is a better show but something had to go and i am curious about a few things with enterprise
2001-11-21 05:58:52-07

Drizzt: ...and the time slot of enterprise fit into my schedule better. i can catch most of the reruns for the season this summer. i think i watched the first 4 episodes of this season.
2001-11-21 06:00:39-07

Drizzt: here is the list of shows collectivelly watched in mine and nat's abode. starting with sunday (you will see why changes need to be made from time to time)
2001-11-21 06:01:51-07

Drizzt: Sunday: The X-files
2001-11-21 06:02:18-07

Drizzt: Monday: Angel--Tuesday: Buffy, Roswell, Smallville, That 70's Show and Undeclared
2001-11-21 06:03:23-07

Drizzt: Wednesday: Enterprise, oh i forgot on suday we also watch The Simpsons and Malcolm in the Middle
2001-11-21 06:04:43-07

Drizzt: Thursday: Friends, and The Tick(very funny show)
2001-11-21 06:05:53-07

Drizzt: On top of all that insanity we watch as many Farscape episodes we can fit in, so i foresee in the end Enterprise will also go. our tuesday night viewing is enough for two days it seems. we are couch potatoes for sure
2001-11-21 06:07:57-07

Drizzt: and to top it all off we are reading 'The Fellowship of the Ring' by Tolkien. I had read it a long time ago but nat never has
2001-11-21 06:19:12-07

Drizzt: has anyone seen all three of the episode II teaser, and trailers? i must say i'm getting excited about it. although i am equally as excited about the Lord of the Rings flicks.
2001-11-21 06:21:09-07

Drizzt: i've been wating since i was in 6th grade for a truly great fantasy movie to be made. from what i can tell so far, it would appear someone has finally done it
2001-11-21 06:22:13-07

Bitscape: Hey Drizzt, you know I blame you completely for my Buffy addiction. Had you not recommended it so strongly and shown a couple episodes way back then, I probably never would have started watching it. You are a corrupting influence of evil, you know. ;)
2001-11-21 09:48:50-07

Jäger: buildmeasite.com expired. That solves everything.
2001-11-21 15:39:33-07

Bitscape: oooo, that would explain things.
2001-11-21 17:06:43-07

Jäger: Your GDP needs you!
2001-11-21 22:45:11-07

Bitscape: You can feel it when you go to work, when you go to church, when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.
2001-11-22 09:29:57-07

Bitscape: Hey, great response post, Linknoid! Very well thought out comments. There is much food for thought there.
2001-11-22 14:27:19-07

Bitscape: Linknoid, something seems to be wrong with your content solutions posting engine. I couldn't post from linknoidfesting. The page just reload with no changes.
2001-11-22 14:33:40-07

Bitscape: The Castle Lair is now open for FESTING.
2001-11-22 19:40:21-07

Bitscape: <nitpick>Technicall y, my residence is titled Bitscape's Castle *Lair*. Bitscape's Lounge is the name of the webpage.</nitpick>
2001-11-23 04:10:09-07

Bitscape: (Although I will concede that long long ago, I also titled my web page Bitscape's Lair, which could add confusion for pre-Content Solutions history buffs.)
2001-11-23 04:11:27-07

Anonymous Coward: I knew that.

Jäger regenerates in preperation for driving an absurd distance tomorrow
2001-11-24 22:46:37-07

Linknoid: This is a test
2001-11-25 23:30:46-07

Bryce: Posting should work from linknoidfesting now, hopefully
2001-11-25 23:34:23-07

Linknoid: My lack of perl expertise bites my code, and I do a numerical comparison on strings (which didn't work the way I expected)
2001-11-25 23:38:09-07

Bitscape: Checking. Let's see if I can talk from linknoidfesting now.
2001-11-26 00:57:17-07

Bitscape: Cool
2001-11-26 00:57:26-07

scott: it's not often i endorse a director - but these 3 movies are great. [us.imdb.com]

Drizzt: sorry, bitscape. i guess my own addiction was contagious...however, if you need a little more of joss whedon's world there is also angel to consider.....
2001-11-26 12:03:45-07

Bitscape: Heehee. No need to apologize, Drizzt. It's an addiction I enjoy. :-)
2001-11-26 12:26:11-07

Bitscape: I watched Angel religiously for the first season, and part of the second season. Haven't watched much of it recently though.
2001-11-26 12:27:00-07

Bitscape: BTW, there's a Willow poll running on slashdot right now. I'll never tell which one I voted for. ;) [slashdot.org]
2001-11-26 12:30:41-07

Bitscape: scott, I through Pi was interesting when I saw it ages ago. Definitely an unusual film.
2001-11-26 12:50:13-07

Bitscape: I meant to say "I *thought* Pi was interesting" uggh. I _really_ liked Requiem For A Dream (same director, Darren Aronofsky), at least in terms of film making style.
2001-11-26 12:52:23-07

Bitscape: However, I would caution that Requiem is disturbing in the extreme. The first time I saw it, I was feeling nauseated toward the end.
2001-11-26 12:54:25-07

scott: cool. i will watch it. [mp3.x13.com]
2001-11-26 15:42:40-07

2001-11-26 16:41:41-07

2001-11-26 19:39:38-07

Bitscape: Can we assume by the fact that you are posting to content solutions that you have non sustained significant bodily harm?
2001-11-26 19:42:08-07

Linknoid: Bitscape, I'm impressed with your new entry page. I was attempting to do something similar in linknoidfesting, but gave up because I couldn't figure out how
2001-11-27 20:35:19-07

Linknoid: Your Javascript gives errors in IE 5.5, but that's a small loss compared to the coolness factor
2001-11-27 20:37:07-07

Humblik thinks he should read the crash entry.
2001-11-28 00:51:42-07

Yanthor thinks Humblik's most recent entry is one of the funniest he's read in quite a while
2001-11-28 11:27:54-07

Yanthor: Jaeger: his xgalaga changes are not yet complete. We have some problems with the graphics looking right (at least to me). I'm waiting to discover whether he also has those problems.
2001-11-28 11:29:04-07

Yanthor: Jaeger: I will send you the xgalaga changes as soon as we have it stabalized.
2001-11-28 11:29:44-07

Yanthor: The Wil Wheaton interview on Slashdot is AWESOME for any Star Trek fan to read. It is especially cool if you're a geek.

2001-11-28 12:11:54-07

Bitscape: telemarketers should be shot. now.
2001-11-28 20:48:39-07

Drizzt: Bitscape: What'd you think of this week's buffy episode? pretty wild. the concept of the show was very interesting to me, not to mention all the other cool things that happened.
2001-11-29 08:31:57-07

Drizzt: oh, yeah. shoot them now, all of them.
2001-11-29 08:32:15-07

Bitscape: I really liked the episode this week. I can't help but suspect that it's not over for Willow though. Poor, poor Willow.

Linknoid remembers the "Now You're Playing with Power!" ads
