The venerable Tim Burton returns to direct one of the
silliest big screen epics in recent memory. Well, what
can I say? There were lots of apes. Costumes were
really well done. The story had a couple of cool plot
twists, but was otherwise quite predictable. The dialog
and acting were nothing too special. There were a bunch of
really cool composite effects shots throughout. Oh, and did I
mention the great costumes?
Probably the biggest audience reaction during the late
night, near-sellout screening I attended was the ape/human
kissing scene. A mixture of "ew that's
gross", applause, and laughter. (Some guy sitting
behind me, apparently awakened by all the audience noise
in the theater, groggily muttered, "Huh? You mean I
missed through the ape kiss?!? Aw, that's fucking duuh" And
gradually mumbled into unintelligibleness. lol.
(Having watched the Clerks commentary track recently, it
reminded me vaguely of something Jason Mewes might say.))
Yeah. Anyway, there it is. Saw the apes, like a world
out of a really bizarre dream. Now I'm starting to
write like an ape. Sleep now.
