If I may be so bold as to reinterpret the words written
by Kevin Smith on the insert... No, not reinterpret.
Simply say stuff that isn't there at all. This is just
what I'm saying, and may or may not have been
what was actually intented by those who worked on the film:
This movie was made for anyone who has ever been deeply in
love. This movie was made for anyone who has ever been
deeply in love for someone with whom, for whatever reasons,
a lasting relationship was simply not possible. This
movie was made for anyone who has ever had a fetish for
catholic schoolgirl uniforms. This movie was made for
anyone who has ever concealed their love, and their
jealousy. This movie was made for anyone who has ever
played the pronoun game.
Now, before I get carried away, I will quote a little
something that Kevin Smith actually did write on
the insert for this movie:
I love this flick to death. This will always be
closest to my heart for reasons obvious, and not so
obvious. And it makes a hell of a palate-cleanser for
the next flick (Dogma). I grew up making this
movie, both in craft and in general. I hope it gets
you somewhere . . . preferably in the heart.
--Kevin Smith 9/20/97
When I first watched this movie, back when it came
out in theaters, I enjoyed it. It was a fun movie.
Tonight, I appreciated it to a greater extent.
The acting in the lead roles by Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren
Adams, and Jason Lee, were (IMHO) undisputably the best
performances in any Kevin Smith film to date, at least
in a dramatic sense. Not to be out of character for
a View Askew production, there were also plenty of
great comedic moments. Among the best of these would
have to be the scene in which Alyssa and Banky one-up
each other, comparing their "battle scars",
while poor Holden sits at the table and tries to
endure. lol.
And as for a theme... I think I've already covered the
crucial points. [Eyes... getting... heavy.] This was
just a really great movie.
