This movie eludes me, yet as the end credits roll up,
I am riveted by what I have seen. The whole thing is
meant as a sick rotten joke, I think.
A uniquely exquisite cinematic piece, it is. A cookie-cutter
Hollywood horror flick, it is not. Certainly more out
of the ordinary than what I expected when I decided to
rent it on Showtime USA's $1 night. It should be noted
that this was the unrated director's cut. Not sure exactly
what was cut out for the theatrical version, but I could
guess a scene or two that the MPAA might have frowned on.
My brain is still a bit too fazed from the momentum of
it to derive any truly conclusive conclusions.
Summary? Umm... well... Try this: Really really rich
psychopath guy works as a top Wall Street business
executive by day, then goes on killing sprees by night. I
suppose the punchline is that in a five-star restaurant
full of Harvard alumni suits, he blends in perfectly!
There are multiple layers of meaning here that I am
working to process. At each moment, the film keeps you
guessing as to what will happen next. The whole thing is
told from the point of view of the narrator
protagonist. The psycho nut job.
As the film goes through its initial stages, there is no
doubt to be had: We are inside the mind of one very
fucked up dude.
But by the end? I just don't know.
The whole thing is joke. A big, twisted, nasty joke.
