Blade, while possessing some nice cinematography and interesting ideas,
suffers -- especially toward the end -- from a half-baked script and clumsy
editing. It starts out with promise, revealing an underground world of
vampires who are at war with "Daywalker", a hybrid whose mother
became a vampire while he was a fetus; so his DNA transformed partially to
become vampiric. Unfortunately, the mysteries presented at the beginning
are never answered. I really lost hope when we learned the prophesy of the
vampire god coming to be unleashed into the world. Instead of finding out
more about the characters and learning about the vampire race and its
history, we get our intelligence insulted with a lot of Power Ranger-like fight sequences and cheesy one-liners.
When I see a movie like this, I start to believe the naysayers who think that
Hollywood has lost all ability to tell a real story. Oh well. I'm going to
see "Saving Private Ryan" on Sunday. Maybe that will restore my faith.
I hope so.
