Ok. This one will blow your mind. It did mine.
All weekend, after writing my article, "Madonna's Propaganda", I thought about the concept of propaganda, the ways in which it could be used, and I posted some of this information here. Well, last night, I watched the movie "Truth or Dare" again for the first time since I became VERY interested in Madonna and her work. I watched it, enjoying the sheer skill, I would almost say genius, in the way it was put together.
Tonight, I watched it again, and my beliefs were reaffirmed as I noticed many things I hadn't before. But when the ending credits came, I was shocked like nothing else at what I found. At the very end, after all the names had scrolled up while "the children and their mother" giggled in bed, I saw a word that looked rather familiar. You guessed it. "Propaganda Films" was printed right there in front of me as I stared at the screen, not believing my own eyes. Then, it came back to me. I rewound the cassete to make sure that I wasn't going crazy. Sure enough. The second set of words to appear on the screen were in very large, easily readable, white and red letters. "A Propaganda Films / Boy Toy Production" And I had watched the movie TWICE after writing the article and was still oblivious to words printed right in front of me.
THIS is what I am talking about when I say Madonna has the power to subvert. I was already so engaged with what she was saying after 10 seconds that I didn't even notice what was right before my own eyes. In a way, it IS almost scary.
Another disconcerting thought has occured to me since I began typing this message. What if she planted this whole thing in my mind over a month ago when I watched the movie for the first time? Actually, I do kind of remember now that when I did see it before, I was conscious of the words and a little disconcerted by them. After all, it isn't often you see film companies calling their own movies propaganda. But I quickly dismissed these thoughts and forgot about them as the movie got under way and forced me to think about other things.
Now that I think about it, it is entirely possible that these memories I'm having are entirely fabricated. Now all the wild conspiracy theories I ever read are coming back to me. You know, the ones that say there's a small group of people controlling the whole world behind the scenes. I think I'll write my own conspiracy theory. (If I haven't already done as much with what has just been written) My version will have Madonna controlling every mind in existence. No wait, I'll make the unseen person who controls Madonna have power over everything. Anyone here think I need to visit an insane asylum?
